Chem Lemma –
I bought this instrument for my 17-year-old son, John. He has been playing the bass trombone, tuba, and sousaphone for three years now in middle and high school, and he desired his own. The reason he desired this particular model and brand was that he used one (somewhat beat up) at school and was most familiar with its operation and sound. Boston Symphony’s endorsement was a real bonus. (Mind, I am not really impressed with the Boston Symphony for its attraction to more pop than art, but I cannot deny that they need to make money). The price was no small matter, believe me. I emphatically pointed out that if John does not use the instrument for a *very*long*time* I was going to be infuriated and immediately sell it. My son has taken to it like no other instrument he has played to date.
When we got the instrument we — especially my son — were astonished. It was in amazing condition; the review/disclosure seemed trifle upon inspection. He played a scale a couple times for me to hear its quality. Now, the keys/valves were different from what John was used to, and the mouthpiece was larger as well, but in no time, he got it going and found the mouthpiece both reasonable and appropriate for the instrument. The sound resonated literally like a bell on many notes, clear and precise. Those notes that did not ring were still beautiful, pleasant, and way above par. It was clearly beyond my son’s current skills, making it perfect to grow into.
I was anxious to hear what his band instructor thought about it. When first presented, he declared that is was “quite an investment,” not exactly the review I wanted, but in hindsight, he: 1) recognized the instrument, 2) knew how much it was worth, 3) knew that most students fumbled keeping up with their skill after leaving high school, and 4) knew that John had made an amazing commitment. In other words, he was on the whole impressed. I took comfort in that — more than anything that John had tangibly made a commitment.
The product included an adequate case and an extra bend to convert the instrument from a B flat to an F. The case use faux-felt which left whiskers on the instrument. I may reline the case with better material. The slide was almost too smooth; my son had to adjust his playing to accommodate the slippage. The values were strange. There are two values, but they work /dependently/ — to use the second value, the player must hold the first, and since they are not next to each other, it took bit of adjustment when playing.
