I was surprised to notice in the package tracking that the microphone shipped from China. I was worried that it would take weeks to arrive and that it could even be a knockoff. But it arrived in only 9 days, earlier than promised. And it looks and sounds to be an authentic Sennheiser. It sounds great and it is a definite upgrade from my old Sure SM57.

I was wanting to love this, but after a month or so with it, I think I’m going to have to fall solidly in the 4 star (like) category (I’d even go 4.5 stars if that was an option). It is a huge upgrade from the cheap Samson mics it replaced, but for live performance, I think I still prefer a SM58 (possibly just because it’s a more familiar sound to my ears).
However, if you are recording your live performances, I think this is definitely a better mic than a SM58 – it is crisper and more articulate than, and has more high end responsiveness and colors the midrange less than a 58, all of which make for cleaner/clearer vocals on recordings (though for serious recording with a dynamic mic, I suggest you look at mic’s up around $200 instead of anything in the $100 mic class, but if your choices are Sm58 and 835 – the 835 is better in my opinion).
So there you have it, I like the SM58 better for live performance, and I like this 835 better for recording purposes (and to be fair, I still really like the 835 live, I just happen to like the 58 a touch better).
