I got this for a relative who is 12. I thought she’d love to print pictures of herself and friends. But then I realized that it is going to be super expensive for her to get replacement labels to print on.
I’m guessing at some point knock-off labels will come out and bring down the cost of refills. I just don’t want to get her excited about it only to find out she can’t afford the labels.
I looked at buying bulk and the price was no different. Bummer.
It’s such a fun idea, but now I’m not sure if I should give it to her or not. I also thought about keeping it to make labels for home made products. But it would add a lot to the price to make the labels on this. I’ll probably continue using what I’m currently using.
I’m usually very happy with HP products. We’ve stuck with them throughout the years. The printer itself it great. Quality made.
I’m hoping with time things will settle down price wise.

I actually like to take panoramic photos so seeing a “panorama” printer caught my attention. I also love to geek out on new and different technology, and hadn’t gotten the chance to play with the Zink inkless printing yet because I’d only seen it on cameras.
This is a neat concept, but it’s limited in practical use and then quite expensive to feed on top of that. I haven’t been able to find the killer application it needs to succeed with the current cost of the unit and paper to feed it.
Things that are cool:
Nice compact-ish form factor. I’m sure it’s designed around the size of the roll of paper available, but it’s small enough to keep on the desk or carry in a backpack.
Roll-based printing for flexible print sizes – nice to be able to do small prints to longer photobooth type strips or panoramas (more on that later though)
App is reasonably intuitive – it may not be the smoothest but I didn’t have any problems connecting and getting prints going with the Android app
Prints stand up – I printed a panorama and stuck it to my laptop and have worn it for a good while and the print still looks good.
Things that are not so cool:
Colors are a little funky. I don’t know if this is a software issue or the Zink technology, but the colors in my prints are less saturated, maybe. They don’t really look the same as the ones in the listing photos. They do look OK, though.
Print speed, not so fast. But you’re not cranking out office documents. You’re making fun photo stickers, so it’s not the end of the world.
Print cost is kind of astronomical. Sure, there’s no ink, but a roll of the special sticker paper costs a good chunk of change. Be sure to factor in print costs when looking at this printer. It looks like it costs about 25 cents per inch to print these little photos, which can add up.
Print size is not very big. You can have a lot of length but are limited to the roll width of 2″. So a detailed panorama can be printed, but it might leave you squinting at it. A 4″ roll would be a huge improvement.
So far the best uses I can think of for this are scrapbooking and kids from tweens to college. But the high cost of printing might keep most of those people away from it. The sticky back paper also makes it interesting for labels, and I have made labels with photos on them. It worked okay but not amazingly so, and a traditional label printer is both easier and economical.
When I look at what I get out of it, I’m not sure how many times I’m going to want to shell out $40 for another roll of paper to print novelty photo stickers. So while it’s neat, that’s kind of the end of the road for it with me. I’ll be excited to see where the next generation of this technology is in a couple of years – larger prints with more vibrant color at a lower cost would be compelling for sure.

I was excited to test this printer because it’s unique in the fact it can do panorama type photos up to 9 inches long. After testing this printer it can do that but it will cost you a pretty penny so print carefully.
The printer is super simple and easy to setup, though it could be complicated for those who haven’t worked with printers or rolled type media before. If you’ve ever replaced the receipt rollers on a cash register before, you can easily set up this device. Connectivity to the app is painless also, and doesn’t even require you to register an account. You can go directly to printing if you want.
You get a VERY small roll of test paper with the printer for a few test prints. If you plan on trying some 2″x9″ prints you won’t get much before the test roll runs out. Replacement rolls are pricey at $39.99 for a 54 inch roll, so that translates to about $6.50 per full size print or $2.20 per 2″x3″ print. That’s crazy price wise.
The print quality is passable but not great. The sharpness is off (which is more an issue with the app) and the colors are pretty dull and inaccurate. Overall it’s fun to see a panorama print come from a smaller printer, but it’s far from accurate. I’m a little biased here as we have a DNP Dye Sub printer for personal use so the results from that for roughly 7 cents a 2″x3″ print (a 4×6 print cut in half for math) is substantially better than the nearly 31x increase in price for this print.
If you are a person who makes money selling prints, I WOULD HIGHLY AVOID this printer.
The app is easy to use, though a little cumbersome and awkward. If you try to add an image and rotate it, it might rotate off your canvas and there isn’t an easy way to get it back. It might of just been how annoying it was to use on the phone, but I found doing anything more than simple ended up being painful on the app.
In conclusion, this printer works and it’s easy to setup. The quality of the print you get from isn’t great, but that’s only if you have literally pro grade equipment right by it to compare it to. For most people who love the idea of a quick print or are satisfied with print colors from Zink, Ivy, Instax or any of those other instant film type solutions they would more than be happy with this printer. My biggest gripe with this system is the cost. A roll of printer paper is expensive at $40 and you only get 6 full size prints from that Panorama wise, and it’s about $6.50 a print. For those who are price conscious, this system can completely tear up your budget and you might find this sitting on the shelf because it’s just to expensive to run.
In fact, after running out of the test paper and knowing how expensive it would be to mess around with it more since Vine only covers the unit and not the paper. I’m forced to just put this on the shelf. I wish they gave you a bigger roll of test paper or at least a full roll.
