The Razer Kraken V4 X is a USB C headset that is very versatile and can be used with these devices: PC, Mac, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck and Smartphones. This is the wired version and it has Type C and a Type A adapter so it can be used in both instances. If you use the Razer software you can change settings easily and set it up for games you play. There are over 300 games that work with the Razer Kraken V4 and it is compatible with 500 devices. The cushions are very comfortable and the cups are over the ear which is better for blocking out back ground sound. I sure would not have an issue wearing these for a few hours at a time because the weight is not even noticeable with this headset as it is super light and I feel zero pressure points anywhere.
The microphone is probably one of the best I’ve tried on a gaming headset. It is as clear as they claim and it does not pick up a lot of background noise. I’m not sure how they accomplished this but it works really good at ignoring sounds from fans, ac etc. I had my AC running, a separate fan on high, my pc fans at 100% and a tv all on at the same time. I did several test recordings and the mic only picked up a bit of the tv and none of the sound from the ac or fans. I was shocked because I sure did not expect it to knock all of that noise out and I could only hear a bit of the tv. Easy to say I don’t think anyone would be disappointed with the performance, and there were no filters applied at all.
The description states you can get the 7.1 Surround Sound after you register the device and it is upgradeable to THX Spatial Audio. Should be great for immersion in games where every sound counts.
For the out of the box sound profile it is quite thin, the bass is not prevalent and the mids are ok but the treble to me is bordering on being too sibilant and harsh. With the right settings it can sound so much better so I would not hesitate to put some EQ on this headset. With 40mm drivers it’d be beneficial to anyone using the Kraken V4 X to upgrade the sound to THX Spatial Audio at the very least.
What I like most about this Kraken V4 X is the mic performance, surprisingly it is simply outstanding. The retractable mic is a big pro and keeps it from being broken accidently, the comfort of the ear cups and headband are top notch for long sessions of use too.
The one drawback for me is this Kraken V4 X is not a re-chargeable wireless headset and the wireless version is $100 more than this one, also the wire is not detachable (bummer). So if being tethered to a wire is ok with you then I say go for it. It’s a good headset that got so much right and the mic is probably the best Razer ever had in any of their headsets. If the wired version is not for you then of course their are other options with wireless around the same cost as this wired version but maybe not built with the same quality Razer is known for.

These headphones are stellar for PC use, and are advertised to work with the Nintendo Switch and the PS5, though I have not tested them with either of those consoles prior to writing this review. I have, however also tested the microphone and can safely recommend only using it to chat when it is extended outside of the headset. I tested recording some basic conversation level communication both inside, and outside of the enclosure. Yes, you can technically hear my voice when the microphone is contained inside the enclosure, but I am sure it would sound very faint to my fellow gamers. It sounds incredibly clear and fantastic when listening outside of the enclosure. Therefore, I am led to believe that the retractable feature of the microphone is simply for protecting the mic when not in use, and will use it as such.

Unfortunately, this headset is not compatible straight out of the box with an Xbox console. I am looking into purchasing a USB adapter to convert the signal to a 3.5mm connection which I will then plug into the stereo adapter for the Xbox controller and may update my review if I choose to do so. I must say I am very disappointed that it isn’t compatible with Xbox as it is significantly more comfortable than another Razor headset that I am already using for my Xbox console that has a 3.5mm plug innately in place. However, since the headset is not listed as being compatible with Xbox out of the box, I am not removing any stars as it obviously was not designed with Xbox gaming in mind. Can’t hold that against Razor.

This arrived well packaged in a nice descriptive Razer box. Inside was the headset itself, a USB C to USB A adapter, a small manual, and nice Razer stickers. The headset was inside a soft Razer drawstring carry bag and I thought that was a nice touch.

The headset is very well made. It is mostly all plastic but it feels very durable and I am sure will last a long time. I love the cloth material Razer used on the ear pads and head band. I think it is the best material to use in those places. Wearing the headset was very comfortable and it is fine for people with smaller heads, but also my larger head too!

There is only one minor con with build construction, and that is the USB power cable. It has sort of vertical groves in it that run the length of the cable. It seems quite sturdy so I don’t think it will ever have problems, I just wish it was softer and more flexible, and perhaps braided.

The volume and mute controls are on the headset itself, so there is no dongle on the USB cable. They worked well and I found them easy to use.

Where this headset shines, is in the sound. It was perfect out of the box, no software required. I just plugged it into a USB slot on my Windows 11 computer, and Windows saw it instantly. I used this for gaming and music, and it was great for both. The bass sounded great and the overall sound was very clear, where I could easily hear the variety of sounds that I was listening too, in either games or music. I was surprised it sounded so good, because it is a huge difference from a much earlier Kraken I had.

The retractable mic is nice and easy to use. I tried it in Discord and the person I was talking to said I was loud and clear. The mic cable is fairly thick so I think it will last a long time without issue.

The rgb looks nice and it basically just fades through different colors, although it may do more if you install Razer Synapse software. This software would be the best to get the most functionality out of the headset, but it is absolutely not necessary. It sounded great as it is without any software, and you could also use other audio software like Equalizer APO without issue.

I really have no cons other than the slightly stiff USB cable. It is a wonderful gaming/music headset that is plug and play. The sound quality is excellent to my ears right out of the box. I think the price is great for something of this quality. I am very happy with this headset and happy to have it in my gaming arsenal!
