This is a good mini PC.
The CPU fan is quiet even at the highest loads, and the CPU doesn’t seem to get past 70C even under the heaviest loads. It’s safe for the CPU to run at up to 105C – the hard thermal trip point for these CPUs. I did replace the thermal compound with the liquid metal based TIM, however.
I bought the following with the PC: MyDigitalSSD 120GB (128GB) BP5e 80mm SATA III 6G M.2 2280 NGFF SSD Solid State Drive (Bullet Proof 5 Eco) and Kingston HyperX Impact Black 16GB Kit (2x8GB) 1600MHz DDR3L CL9 SODIMM 1.35V Laptop Memory (HX316LS9IBK2/16) and they work fine. I think the SSD is a little slow at times, but it may have to do with my operating system encryption and compression setup, too.
I think I would have rather gotten the Gigabyte Ultra Compact Mini PC Components GB-BSi5-6200 version for its 2.3/2.8GHz clocks whereas this one is 2.3GHz only. However, it is not disappointing.
Please note that the one I was shipped had an old BIOS that doesn’t work properly with the memory I bought and I had to upgrade it with a single memory stick populated before it worked. You can find the BIOS download link by searching for GB-BSi3-6100 BIOS. From linux, the way to upgrade that I prefer is by using a FreeDOS USB image. The image is written to the flash drive then mounted and the BIOS files copied. There’s also a windows utility where the BIOS download is.
I’m using this with Ubuntu 16, which works without an issue. Windows 7 will boot but without USB3 support, it’s difficult to install because no input is possible. There is a SATA port header, but there is no space to install any drive.

Comes in a solid retail package. Since it is USB 3.0 it will require the owner to inject the USB 3.0 drivers into the boot.wmi and install.wmi files prior to performing a USB install of Windows 7. Windows 8/10 users might not have the same issue.
I am utilizing two sticks of Corsair CMSX16GX3M2B1600C9 and can only get the top so-DIMM slot to work. I am not sure if this is a faulty controller issue or a BIOS update is required. I haven’t been able to find a BIOS update as of yet.
I also installed a 250GB Samsung 850 Pro M.2 with no issues, no additional drivers required. Remember this is the BRIX version with no room for an additional 2.5″ drive, so shop and choose carefully.
I know there are cheaper memory and M.2 options out there, but I believe in “you pay for what you get”. I will post an update after some more testing. Hopefully someone will have some insight on the so-DIMM slot issue. Not ready to send it back just yet.
Update: I installed the latest BIOS update for it “F4” and even reset the BIOS by unplugging the CMOS battery. Still no luck on the bottom so-DIMM slot. So I am sending this back… disappointed.

I want to give this more stars, but sometimes it blackscreens and requires a hard reset. (Plus, you have to do weird stuff with the graphics drivers at times, such as having to disable gfx acceleration in Flash on linux. But, the “blackscreen” issue is in fact present on Windows).
It’s too bad, because the form factor is great, the performance is nice, and it fits *on* my mother’s desk.
UPDATE – 2019-03-11
Two years into using this, I’m noticing issues when using USB thumb drives – one in particular, a 3.0 SanDisk Fit. It works fine on other systems, and the issue happens on this Gigabyte system regardless of if I’m in Windows 10, Linux Mint, or another LiveUSB environment. I haven’t yet tried a BIOS update – that’s the next step.

We resolved all issues by downloading and installing graphics adapter over the one windows 10 installs. Just run the install, and you’ll be fine.
The Gigabyte GB-BSi3-6100 was a breeze to set up, once you give the instructions a quick read over to make sure you cover all the bases before proceeding with assumptions, and ending up with unnecessary time consuming, delays. We installed with 8GB Memory chip, and a 250GB M.2 SSD.
We installed Windows 10, after selecting the OS via the BIOS, as instructed. USB install was quick and error free. Boot times are never more than 11secs.
The only problem we’ve encountered is with the audio when watching video’s on YouTube. While watching video, if you scroll the web page up or down, you can hear the audio “scratching” as you scroll to the top of the page, or the bottom.
Other than that. This little BRIX is golden!

We’re now seeing some limitations while using windows 10. For example, BRIX froze and remained unresponsive when installing Anti-Virus and searching YouTube. We had to power cycle the box to recover and start again. It also froze a second time, and we had to again, power cycle the box.
We will now clean install windows 7 and see if results vary…
