My daughter wanted to get me a multi tool and since my last name matches the brand she thought it would be a good choice. I wanted a tool made in the USA. I contacted Gerber and this is what they said:

Thank you for contacting Gerber Gear. I’ve provided a list of all tools and products that are manufactured in the USA. Please see attachment. Please keep in mind that the products produced in China carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty as well as all other products manufactured Internationally and in the states. We’re very proud of all the products we carry and stand behind them. We’re particularly proud of the Bear Grylls Line as well.

Should you find a product you do not see on the list, please feel free to contact me and I’m happy to assist you in any way I can.

Along with a spreadsheet listing which of their products were made in the USA.

The knife is sharp pliers work well and the scissors are also very handy, overall I would buy it again. I did buy a second for a gift and would do it again too.

Gerber Compact – 5 year review

GREAT PLIERS are reason enough to have this tool at this price. The rest is just a bonus.

First off, the pliers are a split second away. Depress the locking studs, and the handle slides into your palm. Pliers ready. The jaws are well designed. They’re a sturdy semi-needle nose, with a shearing action wire cutter/stripper and good bolt/nut holding ability.

Then consider that THE PLIER HANDLES CLOSE NEARLY ALL THE WAY. Yes, I put that in caps. Other multitool pliers have handles that jut outwards at an awkward angle in an attempt to emulate the handle spread of normal pliers. But since they lack the curvature of normal plier grips, they completely miss the boat. They START at an awkward ANGLE. And as the jaws open wider, they just GET WORSE. This concentrates force from just the very tip of the handles to your palm. The Gerber handles start out very nearly parallel. This allows much greater leverage and comfort, in comparison. The SwissTool Spirit is possibly even better in this regard. But most others fall short in the pliers department due to the grip angle.

The Fiskar scissors are simply great. Recently I cut the rim off a small tin can, and I put down my full size Fiskar scissors for these. They are short, strong, sharp, precise, comfortable, and they provide great leverage. Bar none, these have got to be the handiest scissors on any multitool. I have 2 pairs of tin snips and a several full size Fiskar scissors. And sometimes I still want to use these.

Why are the scissors so great? The design is significant for two reasons. First, the lever is really long, and in unique fashion, it extends back over the handle. You can comfortably apply tremendous force with these scissors, all things considered. Second, it is easy to sharpen the entire length of the scissor blades. If you were to have one in your hands right now, you would see what I mean.

The rest of the tools are pretty bad. I don’t like how the screwdrivers are not centered when in use (SwissTool Spirit is awesome in this regard). But the Phillips screwdriver is at least functional and sturdy; it handles torque that will permanently twist the Spirit’s Phillips into a pretzel. It’s about the only other tool I use. The knife is just bad. The shape is beyond useless, esp considering the placement on the handles. And the steel is beyond my abilities to get sharp.

If I was lost in the wilderness, I’d want my Swisstool Spirit. The knife is way better. And it’s loaded down with lots of kewl tools (mini saw and file and chisel) that will come in handy when rebuilding civilization, one stick at a time. And when that day comes, I will finally get my money’s worth out of it – if I can still find it. The tool I actually use is the Compact Sport. It can actually serve as a primary set of pliers, cuz they’re that good. They’re that quick to deploy. And the overall weight and size are favorable when compared to a similar set of pliers. The scissors are unique and exceptional. These two features are, quite often, the right tool for the job. This tool paid for itself many times over, already. The rest of the tools tucked into the handle are just a bonus. In case you need to rebuild civilization one stick at a time, and you forgot your other multitool. 🙂

*Hey, what’s with everyone gushing about how you can open the pliers with “just a flick of the wrist?” Hold it by the sliding tabs with thumb and forefinger and lightly depress the locking studs. The handles will drop into your palm with a snick, just from gravity.

I received one of these for a gift about 4 years ago. I had never owned anything like this before. Now it is like my wallet, I don’t leave home without putting it on. It is the best gift I have ever received and is the handiest tool I have ever owned. I find myself using it almost every day. I have used it for:

Pulling slivers out of my hand
    Bending paperclips
    cutting string, paper and cardboard
Tightening and loosening both phillips and straight blade screws
    Opening paint cans
Cutting and stripping all kinds of wire
Bending the nose pieces on eye glasses
    Opening beer bottles
    Tightening and loosening bolts
Cutting open cardboard boxes and envelopes
    Sharpening pencils
    Scoring Sheetrock
    Pulling nails
    Pulling tension springs, Etc, Etc

Every tool locks in position and the stilleto action is easier to use that the fold out type of multitools.

I don’t know what kind of metal it is made of but it is very strong.

If you wear this tool you will be surprised how many times you will reach for it instead of going to the tool box.
