Super bright flashlight with a wide beam

Once dominated by benchmark names like Maglite, the compact, rugged utility flashlight market now has a lot of players. LUXPRO and their XP980 “Pro Series” flashlight is a perfect example.
This flashlight arrives in very brick-n-mortar-retail-store-like packaging… this could easily be hanging on a hook in your local big-box home-improvement or hardware store.
The flashlight is black aluminum and feels rugged and well-made. The light is too nice to risk a destructive test on, but I strongly suspect that if you ran over it with your car in the driveway, scratches and dings in the body tube would be the worst to expect. Indeed, the seller claims shock-resistance up to 1-meter drops.
A rubberized button at the rear of the light turns it on and off, and also allows for the setting of three brightness levels. Lower light levels, of course, will translate to longer battery life. At peak brightness, the light is almost retina-searing. If you were stupid enough to stare into it, I think you could damage your eyes (probably good reason to keep it out of the hands of a toddler.) The beam pattern is intended for general illumination. There is no provision for focusing, as there often is in flashlights of this general type.
The light is rechargeable and contains a replaceable lithium ion battery. An aluminum sliding collar near the front of the lamp provides access to an otherwise-hidden C-type USB charging port.
To remove/replace the battery, you unscrew the end-cap at the tail end of the flashlight. The cap features an o-ring (presumably for water resistance) but the sliding cover for the USB port doesn’t seem to have any sealing features. The seller makes no claims about any specific IPX rating. I suspect this flashlight will shrug off casual exposure to moisture, but it probably wouldn’t tolerate immersion or heavy exposure to rain.
The $25-buck price-point places this I’ve-never-heard-of-it brand-name into the same general arena as Maglite, but as far as I can tell, it might actually be worth it.

This is a super-powered LED flashlight, considerably brighter than the more common smaller ones, without being too large like the old-school D-cell type.
You can choose different brightness levels by pushing the button multiple times, though I think in most cases I’ll just go with the brightest.
Like so many devices these days, it charges using a standard USB-C cable like your phone. There is no provision to replace the batteries though, so when they run down you will need to find somewhere to charge them back up again.
It is heavily built from metal, and appears to be at least water resistant – there’s a rotating metal cover over the USB port which probably isn’t waterproof in the sense of using it while scuba diving, but should do fine to protect it in the rain.
My only negative observation is that, unlike many similar flashlights, there is no provision to “focus” the beam wider or narrower. This does add to usability under certain circumstances. But that’s a minor quibble, otherwise it’s great.

The quality of this flashlight is first rate and it is the perfect size to carry. Light output is excellent but it does not have the ability to focus the beam. The best feature I like is the 3 modes, high, medium and low. No irritating blinking or strobe that you need to cycle through. The charge port for the usb is also excellently designed. No rubber cover that never seems to seal properly. This flashlight uses a collar that you twist when you want to charge. Overall great flashlight

I’m not equipped to measure the lumen output of this flashlight, but it’s BRIGHT. Three levels of light, and even the middle one would be useful for most purposes. On the fifth picture on their Amazon web page, they state it uses a micro-USB charging cable but the description says USB-C; mine has USB-C which I much prefer for its sturdiness and resistance to damage. The sixth picture states that it has a much longer run-time and on the bright setting than on the dim, which is of course incorrect but just indicative of poor editing rather than an intent to mislead. Comes in a blister pack with no manual, but there is nothing complicated about the operation (exception: the charging port is dust-resistant behind a rotating cover with the instruction “rotate” written in the smallest font i’ve ever seen in a commercial product that wasn’t a wristwatch). Nice hand feel and grippy surface.
Highly recommended. Would buy again.

I have a few Luxpo flashlights. This one and the XP1105. Both seem decent but not as well made as some other brands.
They have the rubber grip which is nice, and I do like the twist collar to protect the USB C charging port. The tail switch is tactile and responsive.
I’m not a fan of the super basic UI. Single click to turn on, always comes on at the highest level, then click thru medium and low. No turbo, no shortcuts, no moonlight mode, just the three basics without memory. This may actually be a benefit for some people that prefer a super simple UI, I just prefer something with more features.
The tail cap unscrews to access the battery. The threads are a bit gritty and they are not anodized. You cannot physically lock out the battery by quarter turning the tail cap. Other brands in this segment have much nicer smoother machining on the threads. They also allow you to lock out the light by twisting the cap counterclockwise a quarter turn.
It does not come with a pocket clip, but I was able to get a convoy universal clip to fit quite well. It does come with a lanyard though.
They also include a 2000 MAH button top 18650 which seems to be of good quality. It’s a protected cell and actually tested slightly above the claimed capacity, so that’s good.
Overall it’s not a bad flashlight. Most people would be just fine with it, but I’m more of a hobbyist and know there are much nicer similarly priced flashlights on the market.
