The Viz450 appears to be well built, including the switch, and have a sufficient battery life to last through my longer rides of up to 100 mi. I’ve used it for about a month with good results.
The ViZ450 has four light setting: Constant, Flashing, Group Ride, and Daytime Hyperflash (see figure). I find these settings are adequate. Other high end tail lights typically have more settings, but who wants to cycle through a bunch of modes you will never use?
The ViZ450 is advertised as putting out 450 lumens, but that occurs only in the Daytime Hyperflash mode and is only a flash of milliseconds in duration. Nevertheless, the light is sufficiently bright for daytime use.
Although not necessary in theory, most people will remove the light from the bicycle to recharge it because it is awkward to plug in the USB cable while the light is on the bike, at least in the vertical orientation.
If you have the rubber band mount then you have to reinstall the light after each charge. I wonder how long my rubber band will last? At this time Cateye doesn’t sell the rubber band separately, you have to buy the complete SP-15 bracket. There is another mount (bracket) that is fixed to the seatpost, the SP-11 bracket, but the ViZ tail light will stick out further from the seatpost than the SP-15 bracket.

I saw another review on another site about this light that at first was not impressed because the flashing light settings were “just irritating” and, he thought, unnecessary. Then he tested it in actual use on a bike ride and changed his opinion, was impressed how not a single car cut too close and most moved further over in their lane, giving him extra room and safety. And I gotta agree:
The light is so bright that, day or night, I mostly use the Group Bike Ride setting, which is plenty bright, automobiles notice me and give room, and yet it is not blinding. Daytime Bide Ride setting IS blinding, so I mostly do not use EXCEPT when competing with the rising or setting sun which is blinding drivers anyway; then the taillight is at least still noticeable (brightness and obnoxious blinking pattern), so that I can still be seen, whereas most taillights on their brightest and flashing will simply be drowned in the light from the sun.
If it lasts a sufficiently long time, this is going to be by far the best bicycle taillight I’ve ever had. With a previous Cateye (the original Rapid 3), I’d already had some police officers stop me to tell me how much they liked the light because of how noticeable I was; they’d be absolutely astounded now. If you bike in or close to traffic, in unprotected bike lanes, etc., at night, or in early morning and at sunset . . . GET THIS LIGHT!!

Hands down the best rear bike light ever – great elastic mounting mechanism. Great patterns that interrupt and catch your attention and you can change which pattern to use based on your need ie bright sunny day or dusk. Most rear lights are for some reason like only 40 lumen on the market and they try and tell you it’s more about the focus and lenses but that’s false you need a lot of lumens for day time warning and this is fantastic.

I bought the Viz300 and loved it so much I bought the Viz450 for my wife. We had some close calls on our bikes, with cars getting too close- once we installed these lights drivers gave us way more clearance when passing us! I think it gives us more of a ‘presence’ in the road. Batteries last longer than I do, we mountain bike for 2-3 hours are a time and these have never failed us yet!

I looked at about all of the tail lights available for my bike, all the options, flash patterns, etc; and what I really needed, like most who are road cycling, is daytime visibility. I barely ride at night, or in the city as a commuter, so I don’t care about a dozen flash patterns, ones with breaking features and such, as they are all useless for daylight outside of a slow city environment, but I ride a lot with vehicles at speed, narrow or no shoulder, and sense I’ve switched to this Cateye 450 I can definitely tell you I get notice way more. The room cars give me now over my two previous lights was noticeable from the first ride, and I’ve been told how visible I am, and the few extra flash patterns it has is all I’ll or most will ever need. So unless they come up with a better light this is the one for me. Also, I ride a Giant TCR, and even with the aero seatpost the strap is all that visible from the front. Check out the pics.

Every once in a while, a really cool, useful cycling product hits the market. This is one of them. Super bright 450 lumen, lightweight, small safety taillight. Highly recommended. Always better to be seen on the road.
