Arrived ok, inside the only issue was that it wasn’t packed neatly and properly. i had few screws loose in box and surprised hadn’t been lost in the process of delivery. instructions poor since there isn’t a step by step method, its more a look at pic and sorta just figure it out. Mind u I’m a guy that has no issue figuring stuff like this out so for me wasn’t a huge deal but for someone else less inclined may be tough. overall the item is awesome, was worried about the rounded bar for calf raises since i do agree flat is easier on foot but i admit I’m glad i got this, smooth solid construction. I freaking think this machine is perfect. a def buy this if u want a nice leg call machine without any strain on back while can go heavy. A++++

As others said, this does not come with instructions. It’s a little rough standing over a pile of parts, bolts, washers, etc. and your only guide is what seems to be a 20 year old scan of the original drafters diagram – dozens of blurry lines and part codes stuffed onto a couple sheets of paper. You’d think a company making millions like Body Solid could pay one of their employees to sit there for one day, build this thing and write real instructions. Luckily, I’ve put a lot of equipment like this together, so I figured it out but it was a much bigger headache than it had to be. You spend half the time starring at the diagrams for long periods trying to figure it all out. I had to backtrack a couple times and disassemble sections to get it right.

The machine itself works really well. I think this will take my leg development to another level. If you have lower back problems, don’t think squats on this will significantly reduce pressure on the lower back, as opposed to free weight or smith machine squats. I feel nearly the same amount of pressure on my lower back as free weight squats BUT the pressure is coming from a different angle. It’s far more ergonomic and feels like it will actually strengthen my lower back, rather than push it to the edge like atg free weight squats. The machine is very sturdy and feels like it can hold the advertised weight limit – no problem.

I’m still getting used to calf raises on this machine. At gyms, the platform you stand on is always more of rectangle or at least a much larger surface, if it’s rounder. This is a narrow tube that drives pretty hard into your feet once you start putting on higher weight. It’s not extremely painful but it’s uncomfortable enough to take something away from the exercise. You have to really find the sweet spot, where the shoulder pads and your feet are positioned just right on the pegs to get a good feel from it.

Overall, considering price, quality and the compact size (I have 2 really small weight rooms), I’m very happy with it and would recommend it

Look the bottom line is that there is no equal replacement to free weight squatting. Period. If one were to frequent the weight training forums, one would see a heavy bias against any “machine based” squats. I think that this bias is quite short sighted; there are a great many people who aren’t trying to be powerlifters or weightlifters that will find this machine to be quite satisfactory.

For me, I was looking for a machine that would augment my freeweight workouts. I was considering three machines from Powertec, New York Barbell, and the one being reviewed here, Body Solid. The 500lb weight limit of the Powertec didn’t sit well with me, and the TDS version had too many weld points on the weight carriage. The Body Solid version has a solid heavy gauge weight carriage and is more stable in the base.

As mentioned before, the product doesn’t ship with any instructions on assembly, but if you organize the parts and lay them out, you can see where they are supposed to go.

The movement is, well, different. There is less use of stabilizers, so the focus is more on your legs. Because of the leverage design, it will not be an analog for freeweight, which means you will move more weight. The padding is decent. The construction is pretty solid, but because there is a single post base, there will be a small amount of flexion; not a big deal though.

Overall, it is a great accessory to a freeweight workout, but also give a great workout by itself.
