Compact and lightweight, yet you can pump a good amount of water pretty quickly. It worked very well for 2 people for a 2 night backpacking trip (plus a dog and sharing water with friends). The pumping is easy to do; I prefer this to the Sawyer Mini. Maintenance is pretty easy too.

Took on my first backpacking trip for the summer. It is fast, but it is a work out. You have to have it perfectly held or it a mess. I have had other msr water filtration system, but this is not the easiest to use. It did filter the water perfectly, but no is not an easy to use item.

Really handy filter. You’ll definitely need one of these when you’re out in the hills. Many people think that you can get around spending the money by just taking a few bottles of water with you, but trust me this is not the case. Not only do you carry an additional kilo for each litre, but you will also run out of water fast. There’s nothing worse than dehydrating in the middle of nowhere. I’d recommend to get a MSR water bag that is compatible with the filter as well. You can simply attach the lid to it that comes with the filter, so it’ll lock and make it a lot easier to pump without losing a drop of water.

    So far so good!
The filter is very easy to operate and has an excellent flow rate that is nearly as fast as my Katadyn Vario. It is extremely light and takes up little space in my backpack. The included water-bottle lid (quick attach) doesnt fit my water bladders or the majority of my water bottles, but i was easily able to attach a tube to the filter outlet to fill my water storage devices.

The backwashing procedure is very simple and overall is much less maintenance than the Katadyn Vario (which has way too many seals and is a constant battle to fight leaks and water bypassing the seals). The entire process of disassembling the pump (unscrew to parts, and reverse 2 check-valves) is simple and takes a few seconds.

My only complaint is that the filter needs to be backwashed more often than i would like

this is an amazing filter!!! i’ve used a small sawyer hand filter, as well as a 2L gravity filter before, and this is by far the most easy and quick to use out of all my filters. remove the safety cap, throw the pre-filter into water and start pumping! about 10 pumps to fill my 750ml water bottle, takes about half a minute!

comes with a nagaline/msr bottle/reservoir adapter, but i don’t take that on the trail with me for short weekend trips (i only use it for the back flushing when i get home). if i carried a nagaline bottle with me, i would just replace the cap with this adapter for convenience. typically i’ll just fill my water bottle without any adapter, cradling the bottle under my arm and pumping directly into the container (then i use the container to fill my zip top reservoir). have not yet tested if this can attach directly to a regular plastic water bottle, but i believe it is designed to do this. worst case you could cut 3-4″of the tubing and use that as a straw to fill any container (or your face 🙂 ) directly.

i read a lot of complaints about the back flush process, honestly after watching one youtube video i was able to easily back flush the system. it’s not that hard, just make sure you aren’t in a position to have one of the rubber flow pieces roll away. the only drawback is you do need that nagaline adapter to get the job done properly – that said the sawyer needed that big syringe thingy which is only marginally lighter.

overall i definitely recommend this product, it’s been a great addition to my backpacking kit.

I picked this up as a lightweight alternative to my Katadyn Vario after a friend had one on a backpacking trip.

Taste wise, the lack of carbon filter means that there are more flavors not filtered out. This isn’t much of a problem where the water is fairly clean already, however if you in an area that the water tastes funny (or really dont like any taste) I would advise a larger filter like the Vario or MSR equivalent that has a carbon filter assembly.

Speed is good – again, the streams were clear/fairly clean so we didn’t run into any sediment buildup that may be an issue to flow. One thing I have yet to work out a good solution for was the pickup end is a lightweight strainer that tends to float with the intake up. In a fast moving stream, this tended to cause it to suck in air and not pump as efficiently as a fully submerged intake. Not the fastest, but will get you clean water reasonably well.

I did test the backflush procedure before leaving, following the instructions it wasn’t too hard but the new valves took some time to coax into action at first – once they were working it was really easy.

Using it as my day trip filter with 1-2 people, and I can see it working well for light backpacking with 1 person very well. If you have more people in your group, the extra efficiency given by larger pumps likely will serve you better. The Vario was pumping 8-10L every morning and night for 5 days, this pump does well for 2-3L before the ergonomics start to work against you.

All that said, its a great value and will be my main pump for everything but the larger trips.

Worked great the first day out. By the second day, it was getting noticeably harder to pump. By the end of the third day of use, the filter required a tremendous amount of force to filter the water, and the pumping speed was about 5 minutes for a single litre (the quoted speed is 3 litres per minute). Followed all instructions for backflushing the filter during the trip, but that didn’t help at all. Short of buying a new filter cartridge, this filter is now useless.

Nice and light, Fast as long as you backflush it as recommended . We were able to filter 8 liters of relatively clean water before the effort became high enough to notice and the output dropped off. After a thorough backflush it was able to filter another 6 liters without reduction in output, And it was easier to clean. The whole kit, ready to use weighs in at 10.3 oz compared to 21.1 of the MSR Water Works EX that I normally carry, And is a lot faster to use. The only downfall I see is that the filter cartridge will break if allowed to freeze..So I put it in a bag inside my sleeping bag just to be safe.
