Took a while to get into. Characterizations were good but a bit boring overall. A good, sleepy Fall read. Amen
Dave Schwinghammer –
The title refers to the Red River, which separates North Dakota and Minnesota. The Red River valley is famous for sugar beets, but it’s not exactly THE MIGHTY RED, although it does flood periodically during the spring.
One of the principal characters, Crystal Poe, drives a sugar beet truck; otherwise the book doesn’t have all that much to do with sugar beets or the river. Gary Geist is in love with Kismet Poe, Crystal’s daughter. So is Hugo, Kismet’s best friend. She marries Gary, but only because he asks her. She feels she’s made a terrible mistake.
Hugo strikes out for the fracking wells in North Dakota to save up enough money to win Kismet over. He doesn’t seem aware of Crystal decision to marry Gary, or if he is, he thinks he can lure her away.
The other conflict in the story has to do with Martin, Crystal’s husband, who runs off with some money meant for charity.
Gary and the other young men in the story are tortured by what happened to their friends in a terrible snow mobile accident. Gary was racing his machine towards a frozen lake and a wire fence. The other boys crashed their machines trying to catch up to Gary and were killed.
Some of this stuff just doesn’t seem very realistic. Martin steals all that money but doesn’t seem to suffer the consequences anybody else would when he returns. Kismet doesn’t seem to know what the heck she wants. It seems like Erdrich went for the easy choices when she decided on resolution of conflicts.

Wonderful, full-bodied characters in present day rural Northern plains. I grew up in a farm setting of these people. Spot on! Great story to keep me reading till my eyes were bleary.

Brilliant. Stirring. This is Pulitzer level writing. A deep dive into what makes humans tick–and makes women strong and resilient. Can’t think when I’ve read a more profound and moving account of family relationships, a marriage that’s a mistake, and love that endures through it all. Characters are so vivid you’ll swear you know them. Told in language that is magical, simple, and captivating. I once lived in North Dakota, and this invoked so many memories. This book made me laugh aloud and at the same time tore my heart in two. It will remain in my soul for years. A must-read by a dazzling author.

After reading handfuls of her novels, this is what I want to say about Louise Erdrich.
She finds the little things in life and describes them in the simplest, most perfect ways. Many times I am reading her books and thinking to myself, she hits the nail on the head with all her little descriptions of every day life. It is something beautiful that many writers try to duplicate but usually miss their mark.
Also she expands on the grey in life and makes it glorious and relatable . When I read her books I find myself thinking – most people aren’t all good or all bad. Good people make bad choices. There is grey in the world. I don’t know how to explain it other than that, if you read her stuff you know what I mean.
Her novels very rarely have a “plot”. There’s a story line there but it’s usually thin, and her stories are tightly strung together by the rich depth of her characters. She makes reading fun, thoughtful, enjoyable. I have read and reread many of her books because, at the end of the day, she makes her readers feel something. In every book.
I liked, but did not love The Mighty Red. Maybe on a second read I would enjoy more. It’s not my favorite Erdrich book. However. It is an excellent book and one I think people will appreciate and enjoy if they give it a chance.

Researched in many fields- farming practices ancient and modern, agricultural chemical warfare, trauma-informed psychological profiles, mystic apparitions, crimes around and with money, whimsical escapes, willful escapes, abusive situations and how it takes a posse of concerned, sober friends to get out of them, mortal situations and how it takes a posse of peer pressured, inebriated friends to get into them. Ecetera. One must read Erdrich, the weaver.

Erdrich never disappoints and always surprises. I feel I know these people in my own life and location. So real. So funny. So terrifying. So life!
Marti Gilley –
This book got me through the first day after the election. I read it all in a day.
There are many facets to this book : a teenage tragedy, a celebration of life, a stern ecological warning, and a hopeful ending. It is written like a long poem, rich with metaphor and the magic of summer evenings.
James Stephens –
The story kept me interested, I gave it a rateing of 4 because I would only read it once.
