Microsoft Microsoft Office Home And Student 2010 Family Pack By Microsoft

I’ve been using Microsoft Office products since before the turn of the last century. Yes, I’m old, get used to it. Why? Well, it just works, and it’s flexible so you can do almost anything with these packages that you might want or need to do on a computer doing paperwork. This is the second combo pack of these software packages that I’ve purchased, but that’s been spread out over the past 15 years or so. Why so many? I have a number of PCs, laptops and tablets. Before I retired I had to write a number of different professional reports for my employer, as well as for agencies we worked with and state and county governments, as well. Microsoft’s products are ubiquitous, consistent, reliable and basically are the standard to go by. Over time I’ve worked with everything from Word for MS DOS to dBase4, Word Perfect, Open Office as well as LibreOffice. And let’s not forget about the many small companies that have put out “Office” compatible packages for use on Android devices. After using all of these, I personally feel that, Love Redmond or Don’t, Microsoft Office is simply the best answer to paperwork. I’ll give LibreOffice its due, but frankly there are still incompatible aspects in how it works and in some cases how you have to go about achieving what you want to do, that it just makes sense to pony-up, pay the piper and buy the Microsoft software. Now, as you may have noticed, I said buy the MS. But I did not say “Buy” (or that even uglier word “Rent”) the “latest” version of MS. Rather, in both purchases I specifically bought full-license, older versions. Why? Look, one aspect of my being old is I have the perspective of time and experience, and that perspective has taught me that the people that came before me were not stupid. They weren’t even slow! The software designers and engineers that built these older versions of MS Office, for the most part, did it right. Sure, all software has glitches, but there’s nothing in these older versions that warrants not buying them, let alone not having them to use currently. Hell, I’d still being using Office Pro 2000 if I hadn’t needed some of the newer formatting to match other agencies software. Unless you’re working in some 21st century graphics office environment or have to meet some ridiculous HIPAA requirements, it just isn’t necessary to spend the money on the absolute latest and greatest software. I’ve been retired now for about 6 years, but I still use most of the software I’ve purchased on my collection of computers. I don’t write reports anymore, but I have plenty of uses for many of the facets of Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. I will admit that this second MS Office package I bought does not include Outlook. Rather, I’m using Thunderbird on those few machines I still use that I need to do email on, and that’s because T-bird works great for email, in many ways it outclasses Outlook, but the main thing is when you buy a package that includes Outlook the price goes way up. I don’t need Outlook compatibility, so for the price I don’t need Outlook. But the rest of the MS Office software is still worth its cost, and buying full-license older versions will save you a ton of money. There’s nothing truly new under-the-sun, and the older versions are visually, aesthetically more appealing to me than the new versions with their lack of visual contrast and emphasis on “Teams” this and multi-sharing documents. Save your money and look for “value” instead of what’s “new.”

I built a new computer and upgraded from XP to Windows 7, so while I was at it, I upgraded to this version of Office, mostly because Microsoft no longer supports 2000.

Pros: Can legally be used on 3 computers, so I have it on my desktop and laptop. Word and Excel are greatly improved, with some neat features, options and addons that 2000 doesn’t have. The product seems stable and I have had no operational problems with it.

Cons: Only one con, really. Like many others, I don’t care for the “ribbon.” I think it needlessly complicates using functions that were very simple to get to in 2000. Maybe I’m just an old codger who needs to get into the 21st century 🙂 but I think Microsoft over-engineered a bit on this. If not for this, I would rate this software 5 stars.

Another thought: Even if you are using Windows 64-bit, know that Office 2010 is designed for a 32-bit system. From what my research tells me, this is because many addons don’t work properly, if at all, in 64-bit. In fact, the default install on this is 32-bit, and you have to jump through a bunch of hoops to force a 64-bit install. Don’t do it. My system is 64-bit, but 32-bit Office plays very nicely with it and I can see no reason to mess it up with a 64-bit install.

Bottom line: The new features and such make this a good workhorse of an office suite and I’m very pleased with it. But I really think that in future editions, Microsoft should rethink the whole ribbon thing. If this isn’t a problem for you, I recommend Office 2010.
