For the price this is a very good uke. It us we’ll finished with an understated matt varnish. The mahogany is fine grained and well matched. The fret board is well finished, the intonation is good all the way up the neck. The tone is quite mellow, the projection is good. I don’t like the Aquila string it was supplied with and some fluorocarbons should improve the tone.

All round a great hand made uke for five hundred dollars.

I own the Kremona Fiesta CW-7 classical guitar, loved it, so figured I’d see the same level of workmanship and sound quality in Kremona’s ukuleles. Indeed, The Kremona Mari is a beautifully crafted instrument with a quasi-gypsy style oval sound hole, offset headstock with rosewood veneer, solid mahogany body, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, bone nut and saddle, gold plated open gear heads and matte finish. It is simply appointed with no decorative inlays or binding. The oval sound-hole and aerodynamic bridge and head stock impart a modern design vibe while the simple mahogany body and matte finish link Mari to legacy ukulele design and sound.

Mari plays in tune up the neck, feels great in my hands and not a messy glue joint, finish defect or sharp fret to be found. Impeccable workmanship! One gotcha about matte finishes is they emit a “sanding sound” when rubbed against a cotton shirt, so you need to be very still when recording. Glossy finishes are quieter albeit prone to showing fingerprints.

Once the soundboard settled in (tuned up to pitch for several days) the sound was sweet and roundβ€”as expected for mahoganyβ€”and with good clarity. Smooth nylon strings render a sweet dark tone (D’Addario) but fluorocarbon strings sounded almost as sweet but with a slight edge and a notch more volume. I’m not a fan of the Nylgut Aquila strings that shipped with Mari. If you prefer a bright tone, spring for an instrument with a koa, spruce or cedar top instead.

Timbre and volume are even up and down the fingerboard, making it ideal for recording. No wolf tones or sudden dropouts, so little or no compression or limiter needed when tracking. However, volume is on the soft side compared to my similarly priced mahogany Pono MT-E so, although not a screamer, the silky smooth voice is endearing.

The included hard shell case is nice and well padded albeit not my cup of tea. According to the description, it’s a “deluxe wooden arch top hard shell case…” I suppose it could be considered as deluxe but it doesn’t have an arch top. It’s a “deluxe flat top case.” I’ll probably buy a gig bag so I can use a shoulder strap when I take it to my studio or gig around town. All in all a wonderful little instrument: easy to play, sounds great and beautiful to behold.

As an experienced musician and music teacher on several instruments I was interested in upgrading my very lovely sounding tenor ukulele with one whose sound was even better. I spent several months “test driving” various upper intermediately priced ukuleles at local music stores, willing to pay the price if the instrument delivered a higher end sound and action. Then I heard about the Kremona Mari tenor and the consistently high praise it had received.
I am happy to say, it is everything (and more) that the reviews raved about.
Because I play in a Middle Eastern orchestra and several classical ensembles I was hoping to find a large sounding timbre in my new instrument.
This tenor delivers! The tone is rich and vibrant and from several of my colleagues have received comments that finally they could hear me. I am very happy with my purchase and recommend the Mari with no reservations.
