Some thoughts –
This reminded me of when I first heard the music. Having been to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, you can see the burrows walking down the trail as you listen. For me it was reflecting back on the early sounds of Stereo.
B LITTLE –
I bought this used from one of Amazon’s partner sellers, and I wasn’t disappointed. The disc and case were in very good condition with no scratches, and had the booklet. The music is superb, with a fine performance by the Eastman Rochester Orchestra under Howard Hanson, director of the Eastman School of Music (40 years).
As with all the Mercury Living Presence recordings I’ve heard, there’s a well-defined sound-stage, low noise and wide dynamic range. I only have one issue, if you could call it that… During quiet passages, the recording space seems to significant echo like a large concert hall, but during louder passages, the space seems constrained, more like a smaller recording studio. It’s not objectionable, just a little puzzling. Perhaps it’s compression of the microphones. I would highly recommend this disc to everyone.
John Etherton –
Brilliant use of orchestra
Dena Lull –
It’s beautiful just like I remember it as a child thanks

Great music, but there have got to be better recordings than this one
M. Smith –
The ever-popular Grand Canyon Suite is played well by the Eastman Rochester Orchestra, and the recording is up to Mercury’s usual high engineering standard. My only complaint is that soloists are a little too prominent for my taste.
I much prefer this recording to the Morton Gould RCA disk of the same era (late 50s), which strikes me as more of an early stereo demo disk, than a musical performance.
F. P. Dunbar –
I bought this from Amazon. I have Mercury Living Presence vinyl recordings, most notably Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto, and the sound is spectacular. In fact, when I bought the Third I was musically unsophisticated, and could not make any sense out of all that noise, but the sound was so good and being an audiophile I kept playing it until finally I figured it out. The Grofé is another story. I am very familiar with the work, and this recording is risible. It has tape hiss, and strange interpretations. In the Donkey Serenade, the clops do not match the music, and the rain sounds very strange; I can’t really describe it, but no other recording sounds like it. The sound is not audiophile quality regardless of what the bogus reviewers have to say. They never even listened to it. Caveat emptor.
