I own a Jupiter bass clarinet. I have to admit that it is not as rugged as a Yamaha (I have also owned a Yamaha student model). It is a decent instrument if cared for. It may not be the best choice as a school owned instrument where it would get knocked around and not adjusted as needed. All bass clarinets will need some adjustments early on to make sure the octave mechanism is functioning properly. If the price is close, go for the Yamaha. If not, consider the Jupiter.

I am a saxophonist and band director with 25+ years experience teaching. I have played several different brands of bass clarinets over the years. At my first school we had Selmer 1430P, my second school we had a Buffet wood bass clarinet to low Eb, and now at my third school we have 2 Yamahas, an old Conn low E no peg, and an Buescher composite to low Eb. I currently play bass clarinet now in the local community band mostly populated with other educators. The Jupiter JBC1000N that I am playing on now through the school trial program is by far the easiest blowing one that I have ever played. As far as mechanisms go, they seem sturdy and will only bend if you handle the instrument incorrectly. If I were to let my elementary students play this, I would recommend keeping the two joints together and getting a long wooden case to keep it in. The body material is much more dense than on the Yamahas and may be too heavy and awkward for the average 5th grader to put together . The peg is thicker and sturdier than any instrument I have seen. I have not tried the stock mouthpiece but with my Selmer C* and Fibracell Medium Hard reed it plays evenly from low Eb to altissimo G. The RH pinky cluster is taking me a little while to get used to, but other than that I can recommend this instrument with no problem whatsoever. Jupiter keeps putting time and effort into research and development and it shows. 25 years ago I would not even consider the Jupiter brand. Now our school has two baritone saxes, have several clarinets in the loaner drawer, and have a full set of 4 Majestic timpani. I personally own an Azumi flute, a 3 valve 470 euphonium, and hopefully will soon own this bass clarinet!

Good Instrument with no leaks at all! Came with a strap, cleaner, and a standard Vandoren reed (2 1/2). The back tear-drop key can stick sometimes, but using the old dirty dollar bill trick will solve that issue. If you can’t play in the higher register, either you need a new reed, or you need to practice more, because I can play a high C just fine.

Jupiter is a horrible brand. My school bought Jupiter brand bass clarinets and tenor saxophones and they broke at least every other week. We had to constantly keep rubber bands around the keys just so they would work right. No matter how much my teacher took them to the shop, they would always break at least 2 weeks later. And, they wouldn’t sound that good. The high notes on the bass clarinets would be very hard to play and the tiniest air leak would throw us off. I do not recommend buying a Jupiter brand instrument.
