I recently converted one of my basses to a Fretless. Huge fan of the smooth feeling, that perfect fffr frrrrfrrrrrrr you hear when playing fretless. Great starting point for anyone wanting to try flatwound strings.

These have a smooth feel and even output across the strings. While these are not laBella, Pyramid or Optima, they hold their own well and compared to Pyramid, they have more even output. They are stiffer than the others (including Rotosound Monel flats), so that may be a turnoff for some people. I’ve used these for decades and they’ve always been consistent and they sound great. Since they are stiffer and higher tension, I use them with the neck shimmed a little and with no relief/low-action. If you set them up that way, they will settle in a few days to a very nice playing set with a great feel. How do they compare to Chromes you ask? Chromes have a similar feel, but with slightly less tension (a good thing), but they have a strange sound…or at least, they do not sound like traditional flatwounds. The Fenders do.

Cela fait plusieurs années que je monte des cordes à filet plat (ou flatwound) sur mes guitares basses. Cela permet de ne plus entendre les bruits de frettes et autres sons parasites qui, avec des cordes à filet rond (ou roundwound) sont très présents. Au début, j’achetais les Fender car c’étaient les moins chères. Le prix a bien augmenté mais elles restent à un tarif inférieur à bien d’autres marques. Une bonne alternative économique réside dans leur équivalent de chez Harley Benton sur le site allemand qui commercialise cette marque.
Concernant le son : c’est forcémment moins brillant que des cordes à filet rond, mais personnellement, c’est le son que je recherche. Au doigt, cela sonne assez feutré et vintage. Au mediator, cela attaque un peu plus et c’est très plaisant. Pour le slap, cela manque forcémment de brillance, mais les premiers slappeurs s’en contentaient puisque les cordes roundwound n’ont été inventées que 10 ans après les flatwound. Ceci-dit, il faut garder à l’esprit que l’ampli et la technique du bassiste font une grosse part du son. Enfin, il est possible de trouver, chez d’autres marques, des semi-flatwound ou half-rounds qui sont des cordes rondes à l’intérieur et plates à l’extérieur. C’est un bon compromis mais à un prix un peu plus élevé. Les cordes flatwound Fender sont celles que j’ai le plus utilisées.

I have a vintage 1966 fender P.Jazz. very few left alive. It is such a smooth bass and sounds perfect. However, because it’s so smooth and soft to the touch, I’ve always preferred flat wound strings. Round wound on y other bad for a slappy sound — just fine. But for this Fender work of art and the perfect intonation, i love this Fender string. Wow. So beautiful. So soft and subtle, it’s also so vibrant and pitch perfect.
I love these strings and most of my fans agree. So easy to touch but smash that perfect sound. You won’t be disappointed. No sting slide sounds like a round wound, yet very active and vibrant sound.

I like the feel of the strings. Smooth.
slides don’t have that ‘buzz’ that I’ve had on roundwounds.(kind of like driving your car on the highway vs being slightly out of lane and hitting that grooves that remind you you are leaving the road)
the sounds is more full I think. deeper tones or something..

there is more tension and so far I am tuning more. (I think this is tapering off)
the tension has raised the action – pulled the neck up. (doers that make sense) I’m not sure if I’m going to stick with the flatwound, so I don’t know whether I am going to bother to change this. As a pro my fingers are getting stronger…)

I play short scale Mustang basses, one of which is strung through the body and despite being long scale they work just fine – you’ll need to cut them down a little to avoid excess string length around the post but other than that, no problems. They stay in tune well, intonation is spot on, they feel great under the fingers and they sound great too. They are a little more punchy and bright than the traditional La Bella flats used by many Mustang players but I actually prefer the Fender sound, it suits my style better, plus they are about half the price!

I put these flats on a Japanese 4001 copy. They’re really smooth on the fingers and the tone is tight with lots of bottom end. They have more treble than I was expecting, I imagine they’ll mellow with age but for now they’ve got some zing to them.

Sehr gut. Müssen sich noch einspielen. Klingen am Anfang noch ziemlich drahtig. Wird aber besser, klingt schon richtig gut. Neue Halskrümmung, Saitenlage, Oktavreinheit und PicUp Abstand müssen natürlich nachbearbeitet werden.

Feel great ion fingers. So smooth. Sound fantastic. Will not chew up frets like round wounds. Didn’t expect to feel the extra core tension, but not bad, just different. Easy to get used to. Great bass strings, great feel, nicely priced, and very cool sound!

On Monday, when I first put these on, I didn’t think I was going to like them. They’re not polished smooth like La Bella’s and they didn’t sound much different from the nickel rounds they replaced. But they were cheap, and at least there was less finger noise, so I didn’t feel like I wasted the money.
Once I played them, though, I was impressed by the even tone across the strings; no single string stood out as brighter or duller than the rest, and the sustain went on forever.
Now it’s Friday, I’m in love. The overtones have died down and there’s a more percussive thump. The tone is still even and balanced from string to string, and I haven’t lost that eternal sustain.
If I were to change anything, I might have gone with the lighter gauge because these are a little hard to fret. I suspect the stiffness will relax with more playing, so I’m not going to hold it against them, and it’s really just and adjustment from the rather supple strings they replaced. I’m already getting used to them, but buyer beware.
Overall I’m extremely happy with them and bought a set for my daughter’s bass (in the lighter gauge).
10/10 have already bought again.
