This is probably the most modern collection of drums that ToonTrack offers, and it’s fantastic. For more pop, hip-hop, and urban-oriented music, this is definitely the kit to go with if you own EZ-Drummer. The best way I can describe this drum collection is to take the types of drums you hear in hip-hop drum machines and electronic music and reverse the process to make THEM sound like the real ones they’re trying to emulate. I know, it’s not an easy concept to wrap your head around, but trust me when I say you’ll love the results. Also, unlike the previous expansion packs, there are almost double the amount of drum types available, LOTS of percussion (claps, snaps, foot stomps, shakers, tambourines, etc.), and a handful of effects (distortion, heavy reverbs). This could very well be the best expansion pack available from ToonTrack and it’s well worth the money.

I have quite a few of the SDX expansions (with more on the way), but this is one of the EZX expansions that I think is well worth it even if you do have the money for the SDXs. This kit captures incredibly tight drums in an incredibly organic way. You might think it’s just a close miced kit, but it has the features of the other kits, which means it includes overhead mics and a room mic. Because the room is so tight, the room mic is just mono and that’s fine, the overhead gives enough separation. This kit has a ton of variety and even includes brush samples (no swirls). On top of the huge variety of snares and kicks, it also gives a base selection of other samples you might find in an electronic kit, but recorded in the nice tight room. As another reviewer put it, this takes the dry electronic drum machine sound and recreates it with the versatility and performability of real drum sounds. It works for plenty of genres and because the kit is so tight, though obviously best suited for electronica or hip hop, I think it works really well for a tight rock sound as well. The included effects are also nice, though I wish they didn’t default to ‘on’ for a lot of them. Most kit setups take up about 250-300 MB. My only complaint is that with such tight sounds, it would have been nice to get 24bit samples to further mess with compression. But the EZX libraries are meant to be pre-produced (and it is produced well), so while you can put a compressor on it and work your personal touch, you can only go so far before degradation. It still works perfectly fine for sends to fx and reverb though. Still, I often find myself coming to this library for it’s terrific sound over some of my SDXs. Hopefully they’ll make a full SDX version someday. The included midi is really nice, though the organization leaves a bit to be desired and it doesn’t have the variety of the SDXs. Some EZXs are done in the same manner as the SDXs, it’s a bit unfortunate there seems to be no way to really tell beforehand. The performance is still great though.

It’s not a bad product but I really prefer BFD Eco or 2 when you have more advantage to control the sound like EQ, humanize, etc.
