Best portable music stand ever. It is very ruggedly built but not heavy. It folds up as compactly as can be (competitor stands do not) and easily. Every aspect of it is adjustable so you can get the music situated exactly where you want it. I liked the first one so much I bought a second one. It costs twice as much as other portable stands but it is well worth it. It is so easy to take to practices and gigs. It also has a more attractive appearance than other stands.

Some reviewers have objected that you can’t adjust the height properly. This because they overlooked (its easy to do) the adjustment for this. Lower the stand to it lowest position and a yellow knob will protrude out of the bottom of the stand. Tighten this counter clockwise and it will give you the friction you need so that when you raise and lower the stand it will stay put. Once you realize how to do this, the stand is perfect!

Returning this stand, the day after recieving it. Why? a) one of the extension bars has no tension, is useless 2) worse, the “automatic” raising / lowering mechanism doesn’t work, so it’s stuck at low.

The good? Well-designed and sturdy tray swivel, and the metal parts don’t feel flimsy (except for that extension bar).

Wanted to like this, very much, but it’s useless without a working raising / lower mechanism.

Among my fellow musicians I’m famous for being destructive to music stands – I end up having to buy a new one every couple of months. Screws get stripped, wing nuts or other parts fall off and get lost, and the next thing I know I’m stuck with a useless piece of metal that won’t hold a thing.

I did a bit of homework and determined that there are two truly heavy-duty, yet truly portable, stands out there: the Hercules BS100B, and the K&M Heavy Duty. Both got impressive reviews on Amazon and elsewhere; being the cheapskate that I am, I opted for the Hercules at fifteen bucks cheaper.

It arrived this afternoon and – I am far more impressed than I expected to be! The stand supports my heavy music notebooks without wobbling, and it doesn’t have three or four screws or wing nuts to mess around with – the adjustability is all internal. So far this is the sturdiest portable stand I’ve ever encountered – only time will tell if it holds up.

The downside? It does not fold as compactly as the cheaper music stands I am used to (like I said, fewer screws and wing nuts!), and therefore does not fit in my everyday-carry bag, nor does it fit into any of the bags I have left over from all of my broken music stands. So, I had to fork over an additional $15 for a branded bag. As someone who hates logos, this annoyed me a bit – hopefully I’ll soon have the time and the inspiration to sew my own non-branded bag.

And like the 1914 Ford Model T, the Hercules BS100B is available in any color you want – so long as it is black 🙂

These cost a few dollars more than some other lightweight stands but are well worth it. I agree with the other reviewers who said it would be nice to have a tools-free clamping screw to adjust the table angle. The telescoping section of the post relies on friction (which is adjustable but only when the post is fully collapsed) and I would prefer a rotating collar to lock the post length in place. Otherwise, I love the stand. I had another one but returned it because it was too flimsy and when I put a heavy binder with 150 sheets of music on it it bent and collapsed. Not so this one – it easily supports my heavy binder. It also has a deeper table with corrugations to keep single sheets from sliding off, and the overall table is larger, and has a folding extension on either side, handy when unfolding wide music sheets. Also, there is a springy hold-down on either side which works very well. The tripod legs are braced and the post is thicker than other lightweight stands. Overall, despite the lack of positive locking on the movable adjustments, I give this five stars because it is a sturdy, sturdy, very practical and richly featured stand despite its light weight of 3.5#. Bravo!!

Bought this stand two months ago. I had planned on using it, but now I’m SOL. This was sent to me as used junk, that I probably should have inspected first. Amazon refused to refund me because they wanted me to send it back for their own nonsense when I first got it. The box was opened & resealed with blue return labels… I bought new, & I got a used beat to crap product instead. I bought it directly from Amazon, no 3rd party. They only refunded me 10%, so I contacted Hercules directly after getting it out of my closet to start using it. They basically called me a liar, & then ghosted me. They even acknowledged their issues with Amazon, lol. The locking nut is defective. Watch attached video to see why, & the sheet frame is bent to crap. See attached photos. Don’t buy Hercules junk, & I’ve gotten tired of getting used junk from Amazon over & over again. If you want a quality stand, then buy custom made. Just put the extra money forward & stop buying this overhyped junk~

I purchased one of the On Stage foldables for my daughter. It works fine, is very lightweight, and includes a bag, but the build quality doesn’t impress me much. This Hercules stand is another story entirely. It’s heavier, larger when folded, and doesn’t include the bag, but it feels like a serious stand–not something that might bend beyond repair if you don’t handle it with care. (See the photo for a side-by-side comparison of the two stands when folded).

If ultra-compactness is your most important criteria, then the On Stage is the way to go. But if you’ll sacrifice some size and weight for a stand that will hold up to more intense use, spend the extra money and get the Hercules.
