Masterful and impressively researched, Vicki Valosik treats us to delightful descriptions of performances and conundrums faced by the women who dared to break barriers and take the feminine athletic skills—motor dexterity, flexibility, plus strength and endurance—into public performance. She pulls you in at the Prologue and keeps up the pace of surprise discoveries in her in-depth survey of the history and culture of synchronized swimming. As a synchronized swimmer herself, she imbues every story with an insider’s appreciation of the skill and talent of her characters.
A timely topic, Valosik is gracious and generous in her handling of the subject of women’s bodily autonomy with water as the medium. She brings to life some known (Ester Williams) and unlikely (Benjamin Franklin) characters, heroes, heroines, and villains who flow across her pages. Valosik accomplishes the same mandate put on her swim champions to be both edifying and entertaining.
But the stars are the women themselves, who keep pursuing a dream of freedom and pushing the boundaries of cultural strictures. Valoski paints pictures of different eras, women’s relationship with water, and how access to the sport of “artistic swimming” was at the leading edge of the growth of women’s freedom through the ages. From vaudeville to the Olympics, you don’t have to be a swimmer to be charmed by the personable, quirky, accomplished, and mermaid tales in this cultural history.

Loved this book. I didn’t know what to expect but it goes far beyond the pool to offer an incredible read on determination and progress in our society through the history of synchro and women swimming. In awe of these women’s journey.

When I read sports history, I always look for two main topics. First, does the author tell the story of the development of the sport. And, second, does the author tie that story the larger picture of the history of the times. Vicki Valosik succeeds admirably in both of these areas. She discusses the growth and development of women’s swimming, primarily from the Victorian era to modern times. Along the way she ties it to women’s move into the public arena and the struggle for political participation. She draws fantastic portraits of pivotal figures, both familiar (Esther Williams) and those who should be (Annette Kellerman). We learn of swimsuit development (modesty to practical) and the growth of lifesaving procedures that are with us today. All aspects of popular culture were touched by the growth of women’s swimming–amusement parks, vaudeville, movies. Valosik ties all these themes together in a highly readable text that moves the reader along with the waves. I teach history at an all girls school and I am happy to add this book to my class library. Sports history as it should be done.

Swimming Pretty is a delight to read, telling the surprisingly exciting history of synchronized swimming from its earliest forms all the way through artistic swimming as a competitive Olympic sport today. The author (who I swim with on my synchronized swimming team!) does an amazing job of covering a broad and varied timeline while also exploring the details that make the story interesting. It’s got founding fathers, Hollywood flair, and tales of extreme athleticism – what more can you want?
I’ve been a synchronized swimmer for almost 20 years and, while reading this book, I was constantly wondering “how did I not know that?” I have a new appreciation for my sport and the efforts that went into getting it to where it is today, and feel prouder than ever to be a part of it.
I think anyone who reads this will be entertained, surprised, and impressed by synchronized swimmers throughout history, and I cannot recommend it enough.

Fun and fascinating history of swimming spectacles and women’s roles in them, from live performance to movies

So many facts about the men and women who pioneered not only synchronized swimming, but also swimming instruction and life guard training.
I have been swimming synchronized for most of my life—yet learned so much!
Glass Girl 1959 –
“Swimming Pretty” traces the evolution of women’s aquatic performance, from vaudeville acts to Olympic glory, highlighting the pioneers who transformed synchronized swimming into a recognized sport. I walked away inspired by the resilience and creativity of the women who used water as their stage, breaking barriers and changing the perception of women’s sports and capabilities. Very well written!

A deep dive into the history of women and swimming, “Swimming Pretty” nets all sorts of fascinating anecdotes along its watery way. After reading it, I found myself asking friends “Did you know this?” and “Did you know that about swimming?” I loved discovering the story of young Agnes Beckwith happily swimming down the Thames while blowing kisses to stunned onlookers who’d gathered to watch; learning what the amazing Annette Kellerman accomplished gave me a definite case of “mermaid fever, ” too. And the sheer athleticism of “synchro” was stunning to hear in detail. As for the bizarre history of women’s swimsuits . . well, you’ll just have to read it. This is a book that needed to be written!
