This book is the best and most educational resource book for health and sex education. Short but informative chapters, with educational pictures and comics. It covers everything they will need to know, and even covers topics like gender identity, online safety, and STD’s.
Avid reader and shopper –
After reading the stellar reviews I ordered this to help me talk to 10 yr old about sex. However once I received it I began to read through, to make sure it was appropriate. On approximately page 4 there are graphics depicting sexual positions showing man/woman, woman/woman and man/man. I continued reading thinking I could black them out but instead found descriptions on oral and anal sex. I just didn’t feel this was appropriate for my 10 yr old. Honestly, anal and oral are two topics that I hope I don’t ever have to discuss with her nor do I feel she would want me to discuss them. I’m sure this works for some, but not for us. I returned it.

I had heard from other parents that I should be alarmed about this book because it is in the curriculum for our son who is in 5th grade.
So I bought it and I read it. And it’s really good!
It goes through all the things parents should be sharing with their kids but maybe aren’t having that open dialogue. What kinds of things?
Sexual health.
Bodies are different and here are some drawings of different people – old, young, fat, thin, tall short, abled, disabled, light, dark, man, woman.
What happens to our bodies when we go through puberty.
How babies are made.
What it means when people do the thing that makes babies but don’t intend to make babies. And how to deal with that.
Bullying is bad. Here’s how to choose to be kind.
Technology – and this chapter surprised me – this wasn’t in the 2014 edition – it talks about things like the Internet, what it means to post things in social media, and that the Internet is forever so lets learn how not to do harmful things with the technology.
Are there some graphic drawings? Mmm kind of. But it’s in the appropriate range of what you’d expect for a health book for children ages 10-12.
So why all the controversy?
I think this book is being used as a political argument. If you read it for yourself you’ll not find anything inappropriate.

When my son started having questions about puberty, I found that when we would talk he would listen for about two minutes then tune me out. I wanted to provide him a way to learn without feeling uncomfortable and to learn at his own pace.
I think this book is highly informative. It is easy to read and displays lots of pictures. It even includes funny little cartoons to lighten the mood when he is reading.
The only reason I gave it four stars was there was some subject matter that I personally did not want him develing in to yet, but all of it was very minimal/surface level.

I know that this book will cause some parents to panic, but it’s honestly a great and balanced look at how humans develop and what our bodies do. It has some humor, the drawings are explicit in that they are real and don’t make you feel like parts of your body are shameful.
The images that do depict sex are not extreme, kids see more graphic things in music videos. But it does give them some concept of real, loving relationships. With real bodies that aren’t perfectly sculpted ideals.
The conversations we have had with our preteens since getting this book have been so great. They like to look at it and then come to us with questions and we end up having long conversations about our values and things they worry about.
I would have loved a book like this when I was 10 or 11. And it’s certainly better information than I got from my peers at the time!

The first thing that strikes me about this book is the density of the text. I doubt if many 10 year old children would enjoy reading this book. There are lots of pictures, many of them interesting and helpful. But I have a problem with chapter 4 “Making Love: sexual intercourse”, which shows male-female, female-female and male-male bodies making love. Oddly enough, the “missionary” position is never show in the entire book! Apart from that, the rest of the book looks informative (for a 15 year old child) and has enough health warnings to take the joy out of sex. Many of the 1 start reviews on this book make very valid points. I have three children aged 11, 13 and 15 and I’m still deciding if this is the best book to introduce the subject. At present, I think not.

I FEEL That—it is NOT “Healthy Reading” – Especially For Young Children. I have 2 Grandchildren & I would NEVER give them -this book -to read. This Book Features an Illustration showing 3 “COUPLES”- Filling 1 Whole Page- Each Two-some is in Bed -in various sexual positions. Featured is 2 Men in a bed, 2 women in a bed & also a Heterosexual Couple. The BOOKS page- treats ALL 3-Two-some’s-Equally! Remember This Books Title !!! My problem -is with Children- Seeing & Reading This Book when they are at the Threshold of Sexuality. DO YOU REMEMBER -HOW CONFUSED YOU WERE – AT THAT AGE ?

I found the content in this book to be relative and appropriate. As with any media platform there is a recommended age…10+. The parent needs to decide based on the level of maturity whether their child is ready to read it. This book was recommended by a medical professional as a resource. I read it and then asked my child (12 yo) to read it and then we discussed it. I also had my mature 10.5 yo read it. Children should be educated about their bodies and not have to ask uneducated friends questions they are uncomfortable asking adults. This book should also be a resource to prompt discussions. If you are conservative you can explain that you believe that a relationship is a man and a woman but that there are others who believe same sex relationships are acceptable and something that your child will encounter. Overall an excellent book for parents wanting to educate their child about their developing body.

Great book. Lots and lots of info that my 9 year old can peruse. Book says for 10+ but with girls going through puberty younger and younger I think this is good info for a younger audience as well.

This is an excellent book. Are there cartoons of people in bed? Yes. Are they pornographic? Not at all. This book has a lot of sense information and is very thorough. It says age 10+ but I would be comfortable giving this book to my seven year old. There is nothing in this book that we have not had a conversation about already from masturbation to gender to sexual abuse. I don’t think he would have an issue with any of the topics, however it is a LOT of info with small type and that is the one reason I could see that this may be hard for a kid under 10 to digest. We will be using this book as a follow up to conversations we have and he can browse it on his own when he is ready and at his own pace.

I fail to understand why someone wrote this as a kids book or why anyone would buy this for a child. I think it’s filthy with obscene graphics. If you love children, preserve their innocence and keep them from such filth.
I personally bought the book after watching a parent reading it a school board meeting and thinking he had lost it. The language is so vulgar the board demanded he keep quiet which made his point. If adults found it too vulgar to listen to, why would they allow children to read it???
In disbelief, I bought the book and I can confirm it is that vulgar, obscene and straight out filthy.

Bought this for my ten year old son and also for me I guess, to have an anchor for discussions around puberty, sex, and gender. I wish I had this book when I was a kid. Instead we had this bizarre book called How Babies Are Made from the 60s which was both terrifying and hilarious. It didn’t really explain much though. I highly recommend this one to everyone – it covers so much – things I wouldn’t have even thought of but are essential for kids going through puberty or their adolescence.
