3M High Temperature Flue Tape, 600 Degrees, Silver (2113NA)

Installed where I had leaks but will not know the outcome until I turn on the furnace this winter.

What I was hoping for a thin durable hi temperature tape.

Always an excellent product that lasts for many years, doing the job for which it was designed. Good up to 600 degrees F. when applied to a cooled-down pipe; heat will seal the tape to the metal pipe as the temperature climbs. Note: Some building inspectors discourage taping up furnace, clothes dryer, and water heater flue joints, so check your local building codes before using this tape, especially when selling your home. That said, this flue tape will help protect said joints from potential carbon monoxide leaks that might occur in both new and older flue vents. Make certain that you clean the metal surface before applying so that the tape’s adhesive sticks firmly; a metal bristle brush will do this job nicely.

My addendum added mid-December 2019: I just inspected my flue and furnace joints after the 3M tape has been in use for 2.5 years. Not a single sign of heat affecting the tapped-up joints, proving that 3M makes a solid product for this kind of job. Just had installed an Aprilaire 600 whole-house humidifier system on my Carrier gas furnace. I will be using this 3M tape again to seal all the connection joints for the round metal bypass pipe where it attaches to the furnace’s hot updraft ductwork, and also around the the base perimeter joint where the humidifier attaches to the cool down flow ductwork. In the case of the later, you can also use a bead of silcone or other approved sealer, but I prefer using something a bit sturdier. So am sticking with the 3M tape, especially since I have a roll of it already in hand.

Very good and very resistant, i used it to seal a broken electric oven door gasket.

The most important thing to know is this is a very specialized product made to withstand higher temps than the more common “200 degree foil tape”. Therefore you should expect some tradeoffs: this comes in a much smaller roll than the 200 degree stuff.

It will work BEST on flue seams, where it will stick to itself and reasonably clean exhaust piping. If you have a “special use case” be aware this may not stick so well.

My special use case was to “wrap” fiberglass insulation that wrapped pipes immediately coming out of my oil boiler. Because I’m using it for something it’s not designed for, I can’t knock points off. Anyways: I chose this because you are not supposed to wrap pipes with insulation close to the boiler, if that insulation is at all flammable. The cheap “foam noodle” will easily burn, and so will the nicer paper-backed fiberglass pipe insulation. The fire code restriction ends after 12 inches from the flue so DO NOT use any “plastic wrap” around fiberglass closer than that!. Anyways, this “worked” to let me put a surface and seal the insulation, but it’s not meant for that and looks a little irregular. 🙂

Another good use: put a square of this stuff on a flimsy plastic parking pass that hangs off your mirror. The added weight is perfect to keep such things from flapping around in the wing. Tape a few pennies if you want even more weight.

The tape sticks to black chimney pipe and I have not found any smoke leaks yet. Put the system together a year ago, taped the connections inside my cabin, and have had no problems with it.
