If you’re in the market for good-looking, cost effective bike rack, you’re probably going to love the Allen DELUXE 5-bike Hitch. Other “name brand” bike racks can cost anywhere from $250-$400. This one was 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of other models, and I was down with that! As a reference point, I have 3 kids 7,9,11 and we’re just starting to ride as a family. Rack was attached to a Suburban, and this was our first road trip–a 5-hour drive that included freeways, 2 lane highways and even a minor stint down a dirt road. (I.E. – Our trip had lots and lots of “bouncing around.”)
PROS:
* Solid steel construction and very easy to assemble. It was on the back of my truck within 5-10 minutes of opening the box.
* 5 bikes DO FIT. It takes a little creativity getting the handlebars, seats and pedals to “line up properly,” but surprisingly enough…we got all the bikes on the rack.
* 360* swiveling plastic/rubber with anchoring straps provide flexibility to anchor bikes in different ways (there is a caveat, though…see below).
* Cost effective. Arguably the best value on the market.
* Black powder coated frame looks great.
* For our first trip of 500+ miles, it worked like a charm.
THE “IF’S”:
* If you plan on getting into the back of your vehicle with the bikes on the rack…it’s not that easy. With no bikes on the rack, no problem. But the weight of the bikes, makes getting the pin in/out very difficult. I had to use a soft mallet to get the pin in/out and that was with only 2 bikes on the rack.
* If you need to leave the rack on your truck, there’s no way to keep someone from stealing it. So, if you park at the beach, for example, you’ll have to remove your bikes, then remove the rack and place it IN your vehicle. With a socket set, it only take 30-60 seconds to remove the rack from the hitch. If you want to “secure” the rack on your vehicle, consider the Allen Stainless Steel Locking Hitch Pin for Allen Hitch Mount Bike Racks (2-Inch Receiver). But read the reviews before doing so.
* (caveat from above) If you do not have a top frame on your bike, (i.e.- ladies or children’s bikes), you should consider a crossbar attachment like Allen Tension Bar Bicycle Cross-Bar Adaptor. While others have written that this crossbar is not needed, I respectfully disagree. Well, you’ll need it in about 10-20 trips and here’s why! The 5-hour trip TO our destination was WITHOUT crossbars. When we arrived, I saw the rubber attachment on the straps that were upright or facing downward, begin to pull away 1/8-1/4″. These were on all the bikes that DID NOT have a top frame. Basically after 1 trip, the weight of the bikes weakened the rubber/plastic that attaches to the straps. It made me feel that somewhere down the road, the rubber/plastic could give way and possibly drop our bikes. Yikes!! No problem however on the bikes with a top frame. We did ourselves a favor and purchased 3 crossbar attachments immediately, and shipped them to our vacation spot. On the way home, we had peace of mind. Strongly considered the crossbars if you have “ladies or children’s” bikes.
OVERALL:
This is a great value bike rack for someone who wants to get from point “A” to point “B.”. If you need to get into your trunk, or lock up your bikes, you might want to consider the Allen PREMIUM 5-Bike Hitch instead. If you need to secure the rack on your car/truck while you’re away, the locking hitch is something you may want to consider too. Good luck.

This bike rack works great. Instructions were clear and easy. Build quality is as expected for the price. Very happy with my purchase. The straps are secure and the material feels like it will last. Does not take up too much space when on car or off car.

Excellent product and well built. I mounted mine on a 2005 Honda Pilot and found the tilting mechanism to be both easy to operate and clears the opening of the hatch just fine. See pictures.
I have a few observations to make, having read the reviews prior to purchase:
1. The rack does NOT fit toddler bikes. Our family currently has two adult bikes, one bike for an eight year old, and two bikes for twin five year olds. When mounting the bikes on this new rack, I discovered that the smaller twins’ bikes would not fit at all. The good news is that they still fit inside the car and eventually will need bigger bikes that will mount on this carrier.
2. There is NO problem with black powder or residue rubbing off on your hands from the straps. I saw this complaint in several reviews, and perhaps this was an old design issue, but with the product I just received I had no such problems.
3. The rack has a structured loop for attaching a cable lock or other security solution. In a few of the reviews, customers seemed to have wisely made the suggestion that there should be some way of “locking” the bikes to the mounting rack, and I was pleased to see that mine arrived with the ability to do this. Conversely, the rack is only secured to the hitch only with a nut and bolt and my hitch lock does not fit the pre-drilled holes in the rack. So, I either need to buy another hitch lock or drill-out a larger diameter hole. In the end, with the bikes secured with cable locks and a U-lock, chances are the nut-and-bolt solution will be enough of a deterrent. So, I will likely just rely on the nut-and-bolt that came with the product, since the bolt was machined with a “shoulder” to best secure the mounting post to the hitch.
Mounting the bikes does take some trial-and-error. Finding the right configuration is a bit of a puzzle, but not too daunting with some planning.
All in all, this is a good product, functions as intended, and appears to be well-built. I will update if there are any issues, once I travel with this new mounting system.

Good value for money. Got the x 5 carrier.
A few modifications made as I do long trips and rough roads regularly
– Prevented any wobble with packing and also ordered a 2” tow hitch anti rattle bracket which will strengthen it further. I have a very heavy e-bike to carry.
– Added an extender to get it past my rear tire. This will be permenantly attached to the device and avoids any potential faff of fitting and unfitting the hitch.
Just did a 1000km trip with two bikes and no wobble visible at all.
All in all v happy and already have ideas for adapting another one into a second spare wheel carrier.
Update. I clipped a hidden wall v lightly but it was enough to dislodge the mechanism. I was able to continue but when took it off today decided that it was not viable to continue using it as designed. Instead I have removed the entire locking mechanism and fitted bolts. This will be more secure going forward. I’m still happy with the product but I suspect most customers would not be happy having to do this type of adaptation, I really don’t mind tbh. Star rating remains for now.

I did some significant research and selected this to transport five bikes; two adult and three kids bikes. I recommend this pretty confidently as a great value for the money.
Positives:
SIMPLE: This was easy to assemble and attach (you do need a socket wrench), and easy to load with five bikes. It took me only 25 minutes to un-box, assemble, attach and mount all five bikes the first time!
OPTIONS: The mounting brackets rotate on the bars so that you can mount the bikes and attach at any angle (see pictures and video). Also, you have the option to lower the bar (see picture with it tilted and our van gate open) by removing the retaining pin. This is a great feature but only practical when the bikes are not attached to the rack. DO NOT ATTEMPT when fully loaded!
QUALITY: This is made of decent quality materials (Steel, aluminum, thick plastic, and strong straps). The paint isn’t powder coated, which was the only disappointment and will lead to scrapes and eventually corrosion if you use this all the time.
Negatives:
– Even after tightening all bolts with socket wrenches, the rack rattles and sways. I watched the bikes in the rear view and saw them obviously moving the entire trip. I don’t think it’s a serious issue, but I wish the tubes fit tighter together. I wrapped painters tape around the inside pipes To fill the voids and so far it’s heavily reduced the movement.
I recommend this as a good value for families that want to transport bikes casually for vacations or weekend trips.
