The Delaneys are known in Australia as a tennis family. Joy and Stan ran a tennis school for decades, coaching the next generation of tennis players after Stan’s knee was injured ending his own career. He had one player who made it to and won Wimbledon. Now they are retired and not exactly sure what to do with themselves.
Their children are grown and have varying success. Amy is the oldest and still searching. She has always had issues fitting into the world and shares a house with flatmates, working various part time jobs. Logan is a teacher at the local community college but his long time girlfriend has just left him. Troy has made it big, trading commodities. He is wealthy but lonely, having no one to share his success with. Brooke has open a physical therapy business but the hours she is pouring into making it a success are affecting her marriage.
One night the doorbell rings at Stan and Joy’s house after dark. On the porch stands a young girl, barefoot in the winter cold and bleeding on her face. She asks to come in for a minute stating that she is fleeing from an abusive boyfriend. The couple let her in and before they know it, have fed her, drawn her a bath and offered her a place for the night. Savannah slowly inserts herself into the household, doing all the cooking and cleaning and going on shopping trips with Joy. The children are all alarmed. Who is this girl? What does she want?
Then the worst occurs. Joy disappears. At first everyone thinks she has gone away for a few days after a fight with Stan. But there are scratches on Stan’s face and Joy’s phone is found under her bed. No money is being taken from the couple’s accounts or credit cards used. As the days stretch on, the police extend the search but everyone suspects Stan may have done something although beforehand, everyone would have said their marriage was strong.
Liane Moriarty is an Australian author whose books have soared to the top of the thriller genre although the author doesn’t consider herself a thriller writer. Her interest is in her characters, how they relate to each other and how they grow and change over the course of a novel. This book shows the truth of parenthood; you are never done and worry about your children even when they are grown. It also shows the varying nature of a long term marriage, how the partners grow together and apart, how small resentments can build to large ones but how almost losing someone reminds you how much you love them. This book is recommended for women’s and suspense readers.

There are parts that drag and you are more than halfway through the book before you really get any information, but I really loved the parts where it was from spectators view points, like others in the community, not close to the situation at all. That was very well done!

I’m a big fan of Liane’s books, and Apples Never Fall did not disappoint. An intriguing, tangled story of family, love, lies, and competitiveness. I think it highlights that you never really know a person, truly know a person. People are complicated and only reveal what they want to reveal to their loved ones and outside of that circle. An amazing read! I might watch the tv series , even though I know the story now, just to see how it’s been adapted to screen. Can’t wait for Liane’s next big seller !!

Stan and Joy are passionately obsessed with tennis. They try to instill the love of the game in their four children, inadvertently creating rivalry and dysfunction. Moriarty perfectly captures the family love and dysfunction in all its big and small permutations. She demonstrates deftly how the emotional injuries of childhood can shape the lives of the adults they later become. The book is many things: a disappearance mystery, a glimpse into a complicated marriage, a look at complex sibling bonds and a cautionary tale about the ways in which families interact that can have far-reaching repercussions and reverberations. Moriarty moves the story fluidly from past to present and back again. Troy, Amy, Brooke and Logan lead busy lives of varying success. They visit their parents often, who are now sixty-something and adjusting to the slower pace of retirement, after closing their tennis school. Then, inexplicably one night, a battered young girl appears at the Delaney doorstep. Impulsively and incongruously, they allow this stranger into their home. Joy feels a renewed sense of purpose in helping the young woman and Stan is eager for a fresh audience to regale with his tennis triumphs. In gratitude, Savannah cooks for them and becomes a caretaker of sorts. Then, abruptly, Savannah leaves. The entire arrangement baffles all of the adult children, who were grateful and also wary. Then, just as suddenly, Joy disappears. An investigation ensues, leaving Stan and the mysterious houseguest, Savannah, as primary suspects. Family allegiances shift, and bonds are tested and re-examined. And all is not as it seems. This is a compelling tale that is at its best when delving deeply into the intricacies of family dynamics. Moriarty recognizes the mosaic of moments and events that can bolster or shatter one’s life and identity. One can learn from the past or be irrevocably haunted by it. I enjoyed the book, particularly the detailed backstories of each character. You finish the book truly knowing why the characters behaved the way they did. We see their motivations and root for their changes in perspective. The only discordant note for me was the ending. It seemed potentially shocking and gruesome, though the reader is never shown that actual, final outcome. Perhaps leaving it to the imagination is even worse. It is in keeping with the central theme that past events inform the present and the future, but it’s still a dark note to end on an otherwise redemptive story.

I wasn’t sure initially how I was feeling about this novel. Initially I felt the story confusing, way too much description and
somewhat dull. However, once the author started pulling the story together, I thought it was very clever and fun. I actually really enjoyed Apples Never Fall and highly recommend.

Be ready for complex dynamics of family life, warmth, wit and emotional depth. Both an interesting mystery and a moving portrait of relationships, this will have you think upon all the nuances of familial bonds with remarkable authenticity, humour and emotional resonance.
The writing is as crisp and compelling as ever, with Moriarty’s signature ability to shift seamlessly between light-hearted banter and thought-provoking reflections.
Each of the characters is vividly drawn, with their individual struggles adding layers to their imperfect yet profound connections. As the characters navigate their fears and resentments, they rediscover their love for one another in touching, unexpected ways, in a book that is a tender exploration of the power of forgiveness and the enduring strength of family ties.
This will make you laugh and cry, and I do recommended it if any of this calls out to you.

A very entertaining read…interesting character studies and really well developed intertwining plot. Ending was a bit of a surprise, but then again ….. not……. A worthwhile story.
