Personally I like a combo of this filter and my su sun canister filter. The only things I really like about this one is the shut off valves and the option to have the water polishers. I have a 55g freshwater aquarium and a 75g red eared slider tank. I used the water polishers on my sun sun filter in the 55g tank and my fish tank is crystal clear. The 75g tank which I use this filter for is pretty decently clear, I don’t expect much because my turtle is incredibly messy but this filter does a pretty good job keeping the water clear. The one thing I absolutely hate the most about this filter that I love about the sun sun is the fact that getting the filter to start up again after cleaning it out/ unplugging it absolutely sucks. On the sunsun you just pump a couple of times and you’re set, on this aqueon filter you have to fill it up, and do this and do that and every time I have to start it up again I have to try something different to get it running again which is frustrating. I’m moving out in a week and I’m nervous that it’s gonna suck to get this started up again especially in a carpeted apartment :/ if you have the time and patience to sit with this filter and get it going it lol work perfectly for you, but this filter always frustrates me when it comes to cleaning and “restarting” it

There were parts broken making the filter unusable. I returned it and reordered. When the second filter arrived there were broken parts again! The filter comes with 3 water flow output options, and the parts needed for 2 out of the 3 were broken. Since I needed to get a filter in my aquarium , I set it up with the hang on the back option which was the only option that didn’t have broken parts and called the company. I asked them to replace the broken parts but they said that it was Amazon’s problem and were extremely unhelpful! The hang in the back option is really loud and I can’t use the other two! Extremely disappointed that this artichokes twice with broken parts and more frustrated that the company was unwilling to send replacements!

I’ve been keeping fish for 28 years and counting, I have used a lot of different equipment. After a couple years out of the big tank game though, I found myself needing a new canister for my 135gal tank and the one I’d used religiously in the past has been discontinued. I’ve never used Aqueon filters, but their tanks are always well made and they are a big name in the hobby and have been around for ages – and the price for a unit of this size was fair, so I decided to give it a go. It was very easy to set up from scratch, and the two polishing units that hang on the back of the tank are an interesting option. I decided to go the traditional spray bar route – and the bar is nice and long which is fantastic in an 8 foot long tank. Often the spray bars on canister filters are quite short. The unit itself runs VERY quietly and the flow on the spray bar is good, not weak like a lot of filters. I was surprised at how TALL this unit is – the canister is taller than any I’ve used before, and just barely fit in the cubby under the tank without much wiggle room. Something to keep in mind for placement. For being that tall, it struck me as odd that it only has 3 baskets inside for filtration – most units of this size have 4. It’s not a deal breaker and it works, but it does limit your media options a bit more. Also, the “quick release” is the least quick release I’ve ever had on a canister – you actually have to unscrew each hose from the canister to disconnect. Again, not a deal breaker, but not really a quick disconnect like most others I’ve used in the past. Overall though I am definitely happy with this until so far and would buy again.

I purchased this filter almost a year ago as a birthday gift for my husband. It’s been great- quiet, efficient. We’ve used it with and without the water polishers and like it both ways, but currently not using the water polishers as it’s in the family room and they cause slightly quicker water evaporation, making the water returning to the tank loud when you’re trying to talk to someone or watch TV.
A week ago the pump stopped working. My husband has kept it maintained so he immediately took it apart, cleaned it, and tried to plug it back in. The motor would try to run and it was sucking some water in but not making enough power to push water back out and return it to the tank. I contacted customer service and explained. They sent us a new pump free of charge and it arrived in 2 days. Very pleased with the product, despite whatever caused this issue, and extremely pleased with the level of customer service from Aqueon! Aquariums are an investment and with a 120 gal tank, we’ve invested a lot in every aspect of this tank, including this filter. But after this experience I’m EXTREMELY pleased with the filter and Aqueon and will be willing to purchase more Aqueon products in the future!

The filter was a lot quieter than anticipated, which was great. I’ve not had any issues with it yet except for one of the parts leaking… called up the manufacturer and they were able to send me a replacement part for it rather quickly for free.

Awesome filter. Has a lot of items included. All hoses. All media and filters for hang on back units. This has kept my tank very clean.

Kinda loud motor/pump. I have a smaller model and it’s very quiet. This one you can actually hear. Normal running sound or a problem!?

I have a 125 gallon aquarium that wasn’t getting clean enough for my two, large over the tank edge, stand alone filters. I knew I needed a canister filter but hated the disassembly needed to maintain it. This unit promised and so far has delivered on the benefits of both.
Within a couple of days my lethargic severums were swimming gaily around the tank and every couple of weeks or so, I take out the carbon filled, gauze pad from the overhang attachments which double as water return elements to clean off the dirt.
It’s easy to assemble and you can prime the unit by pouring water in the over the edge attachments too. I love it! Now here’s the best part: THEY”RE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS THE BEST! I know I should have led with that.
I called their company number, found on the instructions twice. Each time the call was picked up by a human in less than a minute and no more than a couple of minutes later, I was talking to a knowledgeable technician who knew my particular product inside and out. In each instance not only did he clear up my confusion but we chatted for a few minutes about aquarium maintenance and optional setups.
Two times, a call from a nervous customer turned into a chat with a friend. Like I said, I should have started this review here. I only added it when Amazon allowed me to edit my original post.

bought it to replace my old filter. It is easy to instal and prime, good volume for filter media.. Easy to disconnect for cleaning, very quiet even if it is seating outside the cabinet. It has several options for the return pipe, I went with the classic spray bar but I would use the “Y” for other systems.
Good value for the money, does its job.

I bought this filter over 2 years ago for my turtle’s 100ish gal tank. Set up was fairly straightforward, but it was a bit time consuming to prime it. I only used one of the two waterfall outlets on my tank. I kept waiting for the time to come for me to clean it out. And waiting. I swapped the filter on the outlet several times. But I just cleaned the filter fully for the first time after 2 years. It wasn’t because the water was dirty, it was because I am moving. So this is a great filter for my uses. Highly recommend.
Edit: I’ve now owned this filter for 4 years, and it’s still going strong! It’s not the easiest to prime, and get going after a cleaning, but worth the effort.

This thing is awesome so far! I’ve been running it on my 55 gallon tank for a couple days now and it takes out every little particle. The flow is amazing and the water polishing units are a fantastic idea and work great. This is my new go to canister filter. Very happy with my purchase. Also, the canister is quiet and comes with so many things, so you don’t have to worry about purchasing a spray bar or anything like that. I HIGHLY suggest using the water polishing units. It’s a fantastic way to make maintenance easier and makes the flow great
