I like this filter, a lot. It keeps my tank crystal clear. I had a double sponge filter in this tank, but it was not working well with my cory cats. I love then, but they are filthy. The sponges couldn’t handle them. After researching and shopping around, I found this one. It has features on it, I don’t need. I bought it for the filtering power it has. It had great reviews on and off Amazon. it is super easy to change out filters and change the flow, without bothering the fish. Since I started using it the water has been crystal clear, something I was not getting with the sponge filter. Cleaning the tank is a lot easier now and quicker, putting less stress on my fish.

I had a different more expensive filter. This is better.

The filter seems fine except that when it is quiet in the house, there is a very noticeable hum. (I don’t hear the water dripping as much as our old one…. So that’s nice.) I ended up returning this filter.

These filters are great! I have 4 and can’t say enough about how great they are. I use my own filter media but love the quick clean feature. I can change the water in my tanks in no time.
Mike Petty –
Water gets cloudy after three days. Do not recommend it! Terrible aquarium filtration system.

Disclosure: I didn’t get this thing for free like other reviews. I spent my own dime folks, so you can feel better knowing my review is for reals.
This Aqueon filter is the upgraded March 2024 version to the old model and it’s much better!!
Old model specs: Slightly smaller depth on back and has that gimicky LED water level light (see pic). The old model does not have a telescoping down spout and the lid rattles no matter how you position or push down on it. Also, the down spout slits are a little too big, so be careful if you have baby shrimps or they will get sucked into the filter and die. I recommend a pre-filter sponge placed over the down spout if you have shrimps. The older model also does not have adjustable water flow. There is only the full bore high throttle setting. Lastly, the impeller is smaller and does not move as much water as the new improved model with bigger magnet impeller (see pic).
New model specs: Adjustable down spout with smaller slits, automatic restart after power failure, water flow control, bigger impellar for max suction, and water extraction tube for easier water changes, but I still prefer the old method of using a cup and bucket for 20% water changes. The lid fits perfect and most importantly doesn’t rattle. The motor makes a slight hum sound, but nothing too crazy, since it’s submerged in the tank, so noise is greatly dampened. I didn’t use the bio basket or little blue plastic water diffuser, because I prefer to customize my own filter media. I put Aqua Clear yellow sponges on bottom, then quilt polyster batting in middle (sewing section @ wally world), and top it off with ceramic cylinders in a zipper mesh bag. Don’t forget to apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly to the outside magnet impeller to improve function and reduce rattle hum. I 💚 the all black color for easy blending into the background compared to other vendors that have gaudy blue, red, or clear color plastics.
Conclusion: Throw the old Aqueon model in the rubbish as none of the parts are transferable to the new model. This new model gives the Tidal 35 a run for their money. The new Aqueon model edges out the Tidal 35 slightly, because it’s less bulky & cumbersome, water flow is not as intense as the Tidal 35, there’s no impeller rattle noise, and the lid does not rattle either. Good job Aqueon!!
I’ll update this review if I run into any issues, but so far so good 💙…
May 2024 Update: I got nothing. This thing still works like a champ!! Make sure to disassemble the tube and impellar and clean the funk out for maximum flow efficiency.

I got this filter for my new 20 gallon tank. It is pretty quiet since the motor is in the tank. There is only a slight hum and nothing from the impeller. I haven’t tried it yet but the feature of being able to use the filter for water changes will be nice. You just raise the intake tube up and rotate it around to hook up the hose to the fitting. Push it down and it starts pumping the water from the tank.
The only thing I don’t care for is the filter “pads” themselves. They are a proprietary shape. But that can be worked around with a cut to fit pad. The thing that is really bad is that the pad is black. How do you tell at a glance if it is dirty? The only way is to pull the filter out. Not good. I think a filter pad will do a better job anyway.
Overall, I’d still recommend getting this filter.

I needed a new filter immediately and this one was the quickest option. I’m very pleased with it. Quiet and powerful. No complaints.
