When this device works it’s pretty good, but mine stopped working after 2 months. It was intermittent the entire time though. It’s described as being compatible with Mac, but it really isn’t. Features are limited on Mac, the RECentral software (which was the only recording software I could get it to work with at all) is even more limited. Do not buy if you’re a Mac user—and probably not otherwise either.

I don’t like writing these, but I also don’t like spending a lot of money on something that turns out to be a complete let-down. When it works, it works very well; catch is, it won’t work well for long. I’ve had this about 3 months now, barely using it at first but using it heavily during the past month. It is attached to a high-end Windows laptop, and kept in a static spot with good temperatures. My first order of this (yeah), it didn’t work out of the box. Just wouldn’t turn on. So I did a return, and the replacement did work for a few months… and then it just stopped working. Didn’t drop it. Didn’t cover it. Kept it clean. Not to keen on gambling 400 dollars again, because that’s honestly what it feels like. My HD60 Elgato has worked for like nearly a decade now and is still going strong. I have no reason to believe that Elgato’s 4k model would be any different. I sincerely hope your customer service makes the difference here.

I thought this would’ve been better then the elgato 4k x because of that 7.1 surround sound pass through but nope. The aver media did worse, the elgato had no sound but it did had that 4k 60 fps video play. The aver media just didn’t show anything, NO SOUND & NO PICTURE.
Bought a new laptop from Best Buy (ACER PREDATOR NEO I7 4050 16″ Model Number: PHN16-71-73) before I received the AM, updated that aver media crappy program & drivers and when all of that didn’t work. I had to reset the pc and returned the AM and laptop on the same day. Such annoyance… the laptop did excellent tho, it did its job, picture and sound. Was disappointed that i had to return it. The aver media live gamer bolt crap was just a brick with a fan…
External 4k cards are not up to the task yet I guess.

So the card itself is a great product. I’m using a NUC 9 Pro i7 model to encode the stream with an RX 6500 xt for processing the video signal and the one thing I can say is when it works, it’s lovely. However, the road to getting this to work besides obvious technical difficulties such as not having a gpu was only one bump in the road. After getting one, the card still refused to passthrough refresh rates higher than 120. My gpu, the 2080 super, has a USB type-c port that I used with a type-c to hdmi cable to push the video signal through the card. However, what required some digging was the type of usb-c port was on my gpu, its 3.1 gen 2, a 10 gbit/s port. 1080p120 is approximately 7.5 gbit/s so it worked, but cranking the hertz to the advertised 240 @ 1080p caused no signal to display (~15 gbit/s). After getting an active DisplayPort to HDMI cable, I’m able to passthrough a 360hz signal with no hiccups. This was a doozy to get working, took me 7 months to troubleshoot, but after figuring out it was simply a mishap that occurs in the world of technology, I’m glad to recommend this product. 10/10

bought it used from Amazon with a nice discount. only problem with it was the pro video software card was gone. I wouldn’t have used it anyways cuz I already have a pro version of resolve.. ran into a problem streaming a game with hdcp detection enabled.. this can be turned off from settings within AVerMedia RECentral 4

$500 video capture device for ten times uses only!!!!! Very expensive !!!! I usually used the device once a month and it does not work after six months. I have opened a complaint case with Amazon to get a refund.

PROS: first off I have to say I really love the design & the form factor.
-The major highlight of this device for me is the rgb LEDs, I love em.
-Very easy plug & play. Works right out of the box!
-Delivers stunning image quality for capturing & streaming.
-Wide compatibility with different resolutions!
Cons: (1) Its designed exclusively for Thunderbolt ports, though the manufacturer also clearly stated this in the description, but as a power user, when you consider the long term use, adaptability, & versatility of this device,….. making this device to be compatible only with Thunderbolt port is a major let down.
This capture device would have easily been the absolute best external capture card out there if only it supports connection via USB 3.2 additionally or if it’s able to self record!!
From my past experience, I’ve had situations where the major functional ports on my pc stopped working, effectively rendering the devices I had that were exclusively compatible with the port, useless.
Hence why I always feel the need for new devices that I buy going forward to at least have extra compatibility for just in case.
If for some reason my Thunderbolt port stops working, this capture card would become useless without the alternative of being able to use it on a USB port instead.
While I totally understand the choice of Thunderbolt for this device given the high amount of bandwidth required for 4k60fps/hdr but I also feel having an option of usb3.2 won’t be a bad idea altogether even if it means the capture card won’t be able to capture full 4k60 on USB port.
(2) Occasional noticeable frame stutter when watching the output video captured via obs.
I already own 2 external capture cards from avermedia & this would be my 3rd one, and at this point it would seem avermedia still haven’t been able to fix this issue.
On experiencing this issue the first time with my GC551, I reached out to the support & their suggestions at the time was that maybe the USB port wasn’t working well or change the cables or the drivers, but this doesn’t seem to be the problem cos I did run the compatibility test tool at some point & the test came back 100% compatible & also i bought a 2nd avermedia external capture card GC513 which I used on a new pc, I never expected this problem to persist cos I thought it was the GC551 that had issues but it was the same problem with the GC513 too, however since GC513 is able to self record, it’s output video from self recording played without the frame stuttering issues.
Now buying this 3rd one GC555 which is top of the line, I used it on another relatively new pc, test CAPTURED @1080p/60 & 4K/60 via obs and sadly, the issues still the same.
So it would seem avermedia cards might be having issues with obs.
Worth mentioning that I don’t use recentral because it doesn’t have customizations for video overlays and whatnot as OBS does., so obs remains my application of choice when it comes to capturing & streaming.
Overall, this is a decent capture card, nicely built with support for most resolutions.
Only let down by narrow compatibility with connection ports and no on-board encoder. I really wish it had these features and it would have been the overall best external capture card to date!

It doesn’t scale down, you have to play at 60 fps and it still is choppy and cuts out. I did all the upgrades and bought a thunderbolt laptop (Asus tough 15″) The audio was decent, but what good is that if the picture blacks out when game fps drops or raises? Play on Xbox Series X, but afterbuying the laptop I just play on it and returned the capture card
