I own both this version and Oistrakh/Rostropovich/Richter/Karajan’s version. I prefer the tempo in this version, just slightly faster than Karajan, making the music more lively. Collaboration between the soloists and the orchestra is perfect, where in Karajan’s version the soloists pushes the tempo a little faster than the orchestra once in a while. It is arguable whether this (Karajan version) is an artistic choice or disagreement on the speed, since both recordings are produced by the most renowned musicians. However, the BPO definitely lack the grandness under Karajan. I feel it is a shame that Karajan wasn’t conducting the live concert.

In terms of recording, I hope there is a little more detail in the lower range. Live concert might be the reason. Different acoustics, different arrangement of microphones. The music sound a little light occasionally.

Ma’s cello-voice is generally softer than Perlman and Barenboim. It is almost hard to hear him in places. It is a shame because of his beautiful performance and great control on the tone color.

This is one of my most favorite recordings, but it is not perfect so I had to give a four-star. Don’t get me wrong, the performance is absolutely legendary.

Beethoven continues to deliver wonderful surprises especially with the help of performers like these. I heard the Triple Concerto live for the first time in Anchorage when the Symphony played it with the Perlman/Schmidt/Bailey Trio and thought it was fantastic, Randy Fleischer’s interpretation was as terrific as Zuill said it would be. But it also inspired me to order a copy for my library and I picked this one. Great music.

Excellent recording by outstanding soloists of two unusual Beethoven works. The triple concerto violin (Perlman), Cello (Ma), and Piano (Barenboim) with the Berlin Philharmonic is striking. Even better is the Fantasie for Piano, Orchestra and Chorus. Spectacular, the work anticipates the sound of the 9th symphony. Purchased through Amazon!

After a horrendously exhausting day, I listened tonight to this recording, and found myself applauding at the end — and then astonished that there was also applause on the CD! I had not realized it was a live recording. In the meantime, this care-giver, this senior citizen, this ex-violinist, this ex-pianist, this me, had 55.13 minutes of sheer joy. Thank you Mssrs. Beethoven, Perlman, Ma and Barenboim.

Its interesting to see how the Choral fantasy is a precursor to Beethoven’s ninth symphony.

The Port Angeles Symphony performed the Triple Concerto, with three superb soloists on violin, cello and piano. This piece lends itself to being listened to over and over again. I chose this particular recording based on other reviews and have thoroughly enjoyed it. An added bonus is the lovely, lyrical Choral Fantasy.
