This comes with a black aftermarket lens support that is larger than the OEM part. It’s functional, but not really the same thing. Otherwise, the lens is good functionally and optically.

This is a very enjoyable piece of glass. Its got enough range for doing serious wildlife. If you want even more range, attach the optional 1.4x converter (MkIII) for even more reach. Yet, when equipped with an extension tube, its equally capable in doing nature close-ups of bees, dragonflies, or butterflies. Focus speed is super fast. In the field, It handles well and is well balanced and easy to hold. The images are noticeably sharper than the Mk I version. Build quality is terrific as is expected of an “L” series lens. It does weigh about 3.5 pounds, but like I said, its well balanced so that doesn’t seem to be as big of an issue as it otherwise would be.

Bottom line, you get a lot of versatility with this lens. I got mine refurbished for around $1800.00 and I feel it was money well spent.

Other than a little cosmetic flaw on the outer body, it looks and works like brand new. I’ve only taken it out 1 time and the results were stellar. Great lens and they got it to me 24 hours earlier than promised.

I bought this lens because my Tamron did not often focus up to 400mm with distinct quality. I read countless reviews before deciding to try the Canon 100-400. For me it is an expensive investment to an already too large number of lenses. Some of the reviews said that the Canon did not autofocus with the 70D, and some said it was just incompatible. Most said it was fantastic, clear and though a bit heavy, a great wildlife investment. What I have found in taking multiple pictures is: 1. It is quite compatible with my 70D Canon. I am not using it with a 1x converter and don’t intend to. 2. It autofocuses MOST of the time quickly and with amazing precision all the way to 400. 3. When it doesn’t autofocus quickly, I move it back to 300, focus and move back to 400 and usually it works. Usually at 400 mm, it doesn’t like to autofocus quickly because the colors are too much the same and I think that the autofocus has problems at 400mm when the colors or background are similar. 4. At first I could not get it to auto focus easily on big birds flying high at 400, but I had forgotten to check the focus area. Make sure you have it on 1 spot (not 19 spot auto) and it is perfect. You can also go to, the manual focus is great then and fast. 5. If you again pull back the focus a bit, find your bird and then open it back, you get it unless the bird is super fast. 6. I love experimenting with the focus, evaluative and spot and landscape focus. I’m going with spot when bird shooting and this lens is amazing. Above you see the zoom at 400mm and this border collie was looking at me, and the fence around. Another addition after using this lens quite a bit. If I ever get a Full Frame camera (doubt it) this lens is compatible. So my final analysis is that it is worth every penny. It feels incredibly sturdy, has the extra tripod stand adapter if you want to use two or put one on the lens itself. I have found that I can hand hold fairly easily down to 1/30. This lens also focuses on tight long area landscapes so particularly to shoot birds or animals in trees or woods you can spot autofocus on them. Nice nice crisp lens.

So far so good. I use this to shoot Cross Country and Track Field. The reach is fantastic, and although the photos are sharp, they are not what I would call tack sharp. That might be a case of the distance shooting with the subject(s) running.
