I wish I had known from the start that this was a work of non-fiction. I really wanted justice for Rex. I’m glad his mom got work and things were looking up but the extreme abuse seemed to go unchecked and it was very hard to hear all of what happened. The writing was decent but the story tore me up.

I had to read this book over the past week for my sophomore year honors literature class at BGSU. This book was heartbreaking, as it tells the story of Rex Ogle’s sixth grade year that was full of abuse, neglect, and too many horrifying events that a child should not have to experience. The memoir touches on many topics that are hard for some to discuss, but are still very important to talk about. After reading this book, my class had the honor of meeting Rex Ogle, the author, and learning more about him, while getting the chance to ask questions about him and his writings! He is an awesome guy, and his story is one that should be shared to all who want to hear it— it truly allows the reader to put into perspective their own life, while picking up on life lessons through every page. (I also rated this book moderate for the “difficulty” level because while its an easy ready vocabulary wise, it does take mental strength to read about the things that Rex had to go through— especially if the reader had experienced things similar)

This book is heart wrenching, beautifully written, and deeply important. Should be required reading in schools. Whiles it’s a very easy reading level for adults, strongly recommend for adults as well.
Miss Holden –
An easy read and an insight into how children have to deal with image and mental health issues in the home.
Raymond Berry –
The book was very digestable and truly moving. I appreciate YA literature. Not recommended for younger teens.

I’m a middle school teacher and we chose to use this book as a part of our new communication course.
Students tend to be standoffish with nonfiction works because they see them as boring, but their reaction to this book was entirely different.
Another teacher gave out her copies before I got to give out mine and the students were BEGGING for their copy because they heard others saying how amazing the book was. I forewarned them that some material might be triggering, and passed them out on a Friday. Sure enough, by Monday they were coming up to me saying they read more than what was assigned — they could not stop reading. Quite a few finished the book!
Many of them said they could identify with Rex Ogle’s story of poverty and abuse. Some were in awe of his resilience and went and purchased the second book to continue reading his story. Even more students quietly came up to me and thanked me for choosing an author who was like them because it was good to feel they were not alone. Still others said that they never really thought about what was going on “behind the scenes” when they passed judgement on someone or made fun of them for their clothing. This book made them THINK.
Yes, the book contains ethnic slurs and Rex is often referred to as a “sissy” by his stepfather, but the classroom setting that is the perfect time to have a discussion about prejudice, stereotypes, kindness, respect, and social awareness. It is so, so important to have these conversations so students can develop empathy and understanding.
Thank you to Rex Ogle for writing such a powerful book (and series)! It could not have been easy to relive those moments and write about them, but I will say it was worth it because this book is touching lives!

Wonderful but heart-wrenching tale. So well written. Highly recommend.

Wow! I absolutely LOVED this non-fiction young adult book! No wonder it won an award. It was hard to read but it also made me very nostalgic! I could relate to this a a young kid as well. Maybe not everything but I can definitely relate. If you have never read this book, you need too. You will thank me.

I purchased this book for my grandson not only to keep him reading but too see how fortunate he is. I read it too and it is a great book.
