Fantastic BBQ, very solidly built, but also very portable. Gets very hot quickly – great for grilling steaks but you’ll have to watch it when doing anything else because it’s easy to get caught unaware and burn your food, particularly if you’re used to using slower, lower heating grills. Once we got past the learning curve it was great to have meals cooked quickly and perfectly grilled medium rare steaks.

So when our tailgate grill hit the graveyard a few weeks ago I searched all around for a replacement. Saw some reviews about the overpowering heat that came off this grill, but since I have been grilling for 25 years I figured NO WORRIES! Absolutely love this grill. It is without a doubt the best portable grill I have ever had, but there are some things the average BBQ’er needs to know.
First and foremost like some reviews mention you ABSOLUTELY need to unbox it and immediately first thing heat it up on high heat. You will certainly get a strong whiff of plastic but that is not only normal but also a good thing. You want to let it run for at least 15 minutes on high heat mostly until the plastic smell dissipates. Once that is completed we spread wood chips all over the entire grilling surface (make sure you presoak your wood chips in a bucket). Before you put the wood chips down we rubbed the grilling area with a little canola oil, and as soon as you lay down the woods chips my oh my you can smell it seasoning itself almost within seconds. Remember…….YOU MUST MUST MUST FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS!! When you close the grill and you see a ton of smoke bellowing out of the grill that means everything is going perfect! The more smoke you see the more it is seasoning.
You want to keep the lid closed and let the smoke do its thing until you do not see anymore smoke coming out of the grill. Yes that will take awhile in fact if I am not mistaken it was a good 20 minutes. Side note to the seasoning part I would recommend either cherry, apple, pecan, or hickory wood chips. Hickory will give off the most “smoke” taste. We did cherry because that is all the store had that morning and I am very pleased with the results. When it is done smoking you will notice that the wood chips have all turned to ash or close to it (totally normal). From that point on once it has totally cooled for an hour or so remove the grill grates and dump the ash out and you are now set to go. Sounds tedious but so so worth going the extra step.
Now as far as the grill itself and as far as the reviews you probably read before stumbling upon mine. I do believe this is a 5 star grill whole heartedly! I know grills and I know my way around grills and I know a good or bad grill when I see one and this grill is awesome no doubt about it. However, there is a lot of truth to what others posted that you definitely need some experience because this grill (aside with being the best portable grill I have used) is also without a doubt the hottest running grill. When I say hot I mean hot! So how do you combat that? Well this is where experience is really important. You can buy the regulators like a lot of reviews say, but that will help control the heat a little but wont solve the entire issue because it still runs hot. Me myself I did not buy the valve because I personally find (whether your experienced or not) as long as you open the lid for a moment every time it starts to get to 500 degrees or hotter you will be totally fine. In fact lets be honest most people that grill are infatuated with opening the grill every 5 minutes anyway so its really not a big deal. However, cooking your food properly is where the knowledge helps.
I would like to also add that whatever surface you put the grill on is safe from catching fire. The grill gets hot but the heat does NOT transfer onto the surface its on. I grilled for almost an hour the other day and the surrounding surface was fine. But with that in mind I also need to point out that the handle that you use to open/close the grill does absolutely get hot after awhile so you will definitely want a potholder, towel, or gloves when you open it. As far as the grilling goes as long as you follow everything I wrote and as long as you open the grill every time you see it hit 500 degrees you shouldn’t have any issues at all. Everything I cooked came out perfect and I am confident to say that this grill is perfect for camping, tailgating, or whatever small grill needs you have. I absolutely love and can say hands down that I have been camping and doing all of the above for years and this grill blows away every grill I have ever portable grill I have ever used by a mile. If you follow the directions to a T that I wrote above you will be thrilled with your results. I have left a few pictures to help show what I was talking about. First picture is the grill while it was seasoning. As you can see the smoke is pouring out (that’s a good thing). The second picture is what the grill looked like once the seasoning is done. As you can see the chips are pretty well burnt (again that is good). Last but not least is a picture of the corn I made when my son and I went camping. I did make sure to turn it every few minutes but as you can tell from the picture it came out YUMMY. I also have an amazing grilled corn recipe I would be more than happy to share.

The unique part of this grill is the grilling surface. Instead of the usual wire grate like other grills, this has a solid plate with vents in it to distribute the heat. The plate is corrugated to give you nice grill marks, but you can also put vegetables, shrimp and other smaller items directly on the grilling surface without having to worry about them falling through into the flames below. I also put soaked wood chips directly on the grill surface while cooking food to add a rich, smoky flavor. No need to light ’em with a propane torch first either. The grill is hot enough to get them smoking right away.
This grill gets really hot! *REALLY* hot. One of the major complaints in other reviews is that it gets too hot and will burn the food. You have to change the way you do things a little bit to get the best results. Read the manuals that come with it and follow the directions. Oil and preheat the grill, then turn it down to the appropriate setting for whatever you are cooking. Watch your food closely, because it will cook lightning fast! If it is still too hot, prop the lid open to let it cool down some more, or open it briefly to let it cool off then close the lid again. Some recipes actually call for preheating the grill, putting your food on, bringing it to temperature and then then shutting the gas off entirely to let the retained heat do the rest of the cooking.
This grill also has a little bit different maintenance than other grills, however it is really worth it to me for what a great job it does. Every use, once food is done cooking, you close the lid and turn it up to the High setting for 10-15 minutes, which will burn any residue to ash, just like a self-cleaning oven! There is a special tool that comes with the grill to scrape it clean once it has cooled down from this final burn-off. It is great at cleaning the ash from those little vents and keeping it working at top performance. Finally, rub the grill surface down with some kind of high temp cooking oil to season it. Over time, as you use it, the surface will imbibe the oil like a cast iron cooking pan and develop a nice almost non-stick surface.
Finally, another complaint in previous reviews mentions that the grill fires up great for the first use then will not get over 250 degrees after that in subsequent uses. This grill is rather particular about the order in which you do things to light it up and shut it off. If this problem happens to you (like it did to me) the solution is fortunately an easy fix. Shut down the fuel to the grill and remove the supply line (or propane bottle) from the regulator. Leave it off for about a minute, then reattach everything. Then follow the lighting and shut off instructions for your grill *exactly* as they are listed in your users manual. The regulator that comes with this grill has a built in safety mechanism that can be triggered if you shut things down in the wrong order, choking down the fuel supply until it has been reset. It happened to me the second time I fired it up and then, once I figured out the cause and reset it, it has not happened since.
This grill also has a drip pan that slides in and out the front, so it won’t coat your cooking table with grease either.

I have had this thing a year now, and I still quite like it.
For a couple or a small group, it can easily replace your regular grill. It gets up to temperature and cooks just like a full-size grill, just with a smaller cooking surface. You can do maybe 4 burgers at a time on it, so you probably won’t be cooking for 20-30 people on the thing, but it really is just a regular grill shrunk down.
I did get the adapter hose to run it off a normal, 20lb propane cylinder and I have a small, folding table to bring it up to counter height. The hose will pay for itself fast if you plan to use the thing much at all, because those small green cylinders are expensive. I’ve used it on a picnic table without incident, but I just think it is safer if it sits on a non-combustible surface when running.
The fact that it is portable means I can bring it inside and out of the weather when I am not using it. I think a grill left outside is going to eventually rust and rot out in a few years even if you put a cover on it. After a year, I do think the fact that it largely lives inside has been good for its durability, but I won’t be sure of that for another few years. Keeping it inside does mean you need to clean it a bit more frequently, which is also probably good for its longevity.
Probably the only thing your big grill can do that it can’t is that more advanced, low and slow type cooking where you are almost using the grill like an oven, with the food placed well away from the running burner. But for burgers, steaks, etc. it works great, and puts a nice, even sear on things.

Apenas lo cure para empezar a usarlo y se ve que el calor es realmente uniforme, los materiales también se ven muy bien y es muy útil para los dias en los que quieres asar carne sin ahumar toda la casa.

I wish I would have had this all summer. The last half of the summer has been great and I prefer this grill over my large one. We take it to the lake park evenings and weekends and have cooked chicken and steak, both turned out tender and with no flare ups, very tasty. It does cook hot so to cook on a low-medium setting is best, you will never need to crank the dial all the way up, even to pre-heat.
I bought a 4 ft adapter and a 11lbs tank locally and it allows me to feed a whole crew without having to worry about running out of gas.
