I just completed Book One of this three book set. It teaches you to play the notes on a progressive basis and makes it fun with the play along CD. The CD let’s you initially play the song at a slow pace and then it picks up the tempo for the 2nd round. As for the theory part of the lesson book I am already a violinist and therefore I know the theory. I therefore cannot comment on whether or not the lesson book does an effective job of teaching music theory. I am very pleased with this book and can say it has exceeded by expectations. It has a very nice song selection of familiar tunes which makes it easier to learn,

I love this book. It offers excellent, straightforward instruction for the beginning classical guitarist, whether an experienced guitarist in other forms or someone who has never picked up the instrument before. The author, Paul Henry, moves along at an easy, but progressive pace that keeps things varied and interesting. He offers just enough rudimentary instruction to get you started, but without the material ever becoming overly pedantic and boring. I’ve been learning guitar for a few months and had waded through the Hal Leonard Method Book 1 with the assistance of an instructor, but I’ve been on my own for a while since I decided to throw my picks away and concentrate on the classical guitar. I’ve acquired copies of practically every classical guitar method book ever published, and have found some, especially those by Frederick Noad, Christopher Parkening, and Scott Tennant to be particularly good. But for the initial plunge, this book is definitely the best of the lot. I received this book today and it was a genuine pleasure just to skim through it and appreciate its content. Even though I am at the “advanced beginner” stage by now I am so impressed with this book that I’m looking forward to working through the entire book, cover to cover, which I’m convinced will be very productive and satisfying. This was the last method book I bought, but for building a solid foundation in playing classical guitar, I’m convinced this one is the very best.

Hal Leonard has produced a series of great guitar method books focused on different styles including Blues, Rock, Country, Acoustic, Jazz, and Classical. This guitar method book by Paul Henry is designed to take the new guitar student from the very basics of guitar technique and note-reading to proficiency in playing basic classical guitar pieces. The book begins appropriately not assuming any previous knowledge on the part of the student and builds consecutively from basic note reading and playing, fingerpicking, and eventually full classical pieces.

Many Classical Guitar favorites are found here such as the works of Tarrega, Carcassi, Carulli along with other traditional pieces by Bach and Beethoven. The book includes a very well recorded CD with all of the instruction sections and guitar pieces performed by Paul Henry. This book is very well arranged and generally contains good selections of music for the student to try their hand at. Too many method books contains pieces that either infuriate the student or bore them to tears. This method book generally avoids that problem. By the end of this book, the student will have laid a solid foundation for further guitar studies, classical or otherwise.

A very good book to assist with learning Classical Guitar with some great exercises and downloadable audio examples (using the code in the book).

I am a long-in-the-tooth guitarist of many years, deciding to return to my ‘roots’ and take up classical guitar properly. This book is great for that, as I am not proficient at reading music, so I can rely on the guitar tablature to assist with playing the songs and exercises. The reference audio clips are also great for checking what you should actually be sounding like.

I’ve owned several Hal Leonard guitar tab books and they are always very clear and descriptive. This is no exception to that rule.

There’s plenty in the book to keep you busy and the ‘simple’ pieces and exercises are great to get the fingers working. It starts at a reasonably basic level and works you up to some slightly Spanish sounding pieces and Bach Minuets.

You will get out of this what you put in, in terms of practice time, but this is a highly recommended book for either a fledgling classical guitarist, or someone taking the classical route after time served in other genres.

This book is a wonderful purchase for people new to music entirely, and also for experienced musicians looking to pick up a new instrument. Beginners will be given plenty of detailed lessons teaching them how to read music, and these lessons do not get in the way for someone who can already read.

The book comes with a unique code that allows access to a musical library on the Hal Leonard website. From here, you can listen to recordings of every single practice exercise in the book. In addition, the player used on the site lets you adjust the speed and pitch of the recording, so you’ll never be struggling to keep up.

You may have noticed in other reviews that several people have complained about misprints and inaccuracies in the book – THIS IS INCORRECT. The numbers printed next to notes represent which finger on the left hand is used to produce the note, and in different situations the music will be easier to play if you use a different finger.

For example, the book may ask you to play multiple notes in a row that were originally taught with the second finger. It would be overcomplicated to move your second finger repeatedly, and instead the book asks you to substitute other fingers instead.

In total, this book is everything you need to begin your classical guitar journey. Purchase with confidence, there are absolutely no misprints or errors to be worried about!

As an absolute beginner learning how to play classical guitar, I initially found this book to be a bit overwhelming, and it initially didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. I decided that there’s just no way to properly learn from a book and started taking lessons that used Hal Leonard’s Guitar Method book to learn the basics of music theory and reading the music. After about 4 months into my lessons using the Guitar Method book, this book made a whole lot more sense to me and was much easier to follow. The exercises are much more enjoyable than playing a song note by note as in the Guitar Method book (something I do to learn, but don’t really find enjoyment in). Once I could cross over to this book, I found myself practicing more because it was just more fun for me.

If you’re an absolute beginner, like me, definitely get yourself a teacher. Get your feet wet with some guitar music theory and then add this book to your repertoire , it’ll make much more sense and be much easier to progress with. At least that made a difference for me. And if your focus truly is to play classical guitar, be clear about that with your teacher.

I’ve tried a lot of different method books for classical guitar and in my opinion this is the best one,it’s fun while you learn and it has actual pieces that you should be learning at the level you attain .the learning curve is gradual and you not only feel~but you are accomplishing the goal .i take time to learn it at my pace and memorize the important pieces it has.,if you get one method I believe this is the one to get.
