Trust me, you won’t be disappointed! This is quite literally the best knife I own. In fact, I’m going to sell my Ka-Bar Model 1214, because this knife is so much better, so much stronger, has better balance, an excellent hard polymer MOLLE sheath (if you prefer leather, that might be a negative for you), & is less expensive. This knife is actually better than $250-$500 knives. It came shaving sharp. I shaved off a bunch of arm hair, & it didn’t even dull. It’s the perfect length for a fighting knife, but it’s also great for wilderness survival, food prep, batoning, etc. You name it, & this knife can do it. The thick spine, tough 52100 high carbon ball bearing steel, & drop forged construction, make it tougher than any knife I have or know of. I own an OKC SP10, which is a beastly Bowie blade of 0.25_in thick 1075 steel w/ a 9.75_in blade. I like that knife, & it’s a beast of a chopper, but I’m 95% positive it will break long before this knife, due to the inferior steel & tang construction. I like the integrated hilt/hand guard, but I have very large hands. Those w/ small or average hands, might be bothered by the top guard height. The handle scales are great, & have a lot more grip than people think. If I get the Kratom grip of my Ka-Bar wet, it’s more slippery than this knife under the same conditions. It doesn’t seem to make sense, but it’s true. Due to my huge hands, the grip feels small in circumference, but not in length. That’s easily fixed w/ grip tape or heat shrink grip. Those w/ regular size hands won’t have any problem. What’s even more impressive, is that the balance is near perfect. That’s difficult to do w/ a single piece of drop forged steel. I’ve heard the previous model, without the hand scales, wasn’t as well balanced, due to the extra weight of the handle. I only have 3 gripes about this knife, & 1 of them I might be wrong about. I wish it had a choil or unsharpened section near the hilt, so I could choke up for shaving wood. That said, it’s still easy to get my hand over the top of the hilt for that type of work. I also wish the pommel had a small flat section for crushing (you can still do it, it’s just more difficult). I’m also concerned the Teflon coating, while nice, will make it hard to get sparks off a flint. I could be wrong about that, however, because I’ve seen people do it in videos.

This is a brand new version of the survivalist knife from Cold Steel (mo# 36MH), that at the time of this writing is hard to find for purchase. I purchased Amazon-Prime fulfilled by Blade Shop. I only found 2 sellers online & prices ranged from $70 – $72 Note that this model is actually medium-grey in color, not black or dark-bronze, & for some reason is much lighter in real life than any of the pictures (including mine) convey. Even though it’s not stainless I would rather it was a plain steel finished blade, but apparently dark coatings sells knives…..
I weighed mine at 14.4oz similar to another reviewer (not the 18.3oz still shown on cold steel’s & other websites). The balance point is right where the guard meets the blade & feels very natural (handle-heaviness was one of the things that kept me away from the earlier version (mo# 36MC): The champagne colored version of this monolithic knife with its hollow-handle style never appealed to me, both in color & handle-design. The previous version had handle material removed & still the balance point was too far back for my liking, also this handle style made it slippery & uncomfortable to grip IMO. The super grippy & very thick plastic palm swell inserts on the new version have solved all those issues: No handle wrap needed! I have large hands & it fills my grip nicely.
I measured the spine-width at exactly 7/32″, a little less than the 6mm spec which to me is a good thing as it (& the new handle design) helps brings the weight down: 1/4 pound less weight on a knife this size is huge! It brings it very close to the weight of its sister blade the Recon Scout. It’s appropriately heavy for it’s intended use, but I wouldn’t want it any heavier.
I found the fit & finish very good: the blade was true & I could detect no alignment issues by eye. The blade arrived sharp enough to easily shave 1/4″ peels off paper which for a blade this thick is quite impressive. It has a needle-sharp point. The clip’s “edge” is ground flat so it’s not the slightest bit sharp: probably makes sense for this type of knife as it’s more suited to batoning than back-cuting IMO. The knife slide easily into its sheath, but also snapped in tightly at the end. While sheathed I could not jerk he knife loose while upside down, but there is a little rattle toward the tip.
Different size knives do different things well, but I bought this knife as a super heavy duty bush-craft / camp / do-it-all knife. I can beat on & not worry about because both the steel-type & knife-design are built to take it, & it’s cheap enough that I wont feel bad while doing it! As a survival knife if I had only 1 knife to pick this would be it.
All in all I highly recommend this knife!!

This knife came very sharp from the manufacturer. It is a hefty knife, the palm swell fits good in the hand, NO defects any where, a very solid product. BE VERY CAREFUL TAKING THIS ITEM OUT OF THE WRAPPING, IT IS SHARP!
The handle and blade appear to be droop forged as a single unit. Which will make this item nearly indestructible.
The sheath is built like the knife, solid!.The web portion of the sheath is the only thing that appears to be able to wear out with time. It retains the knife very well, even when holding it upside down and shaking it. It requires a thumb push to remove the blade from from the grasp of the retention catch which holds the blade.
There is very little rattle of the blade when the knife is in the scabbard. Over all, this knife and scabbard are priced right priced right. What I have to say is, money well spent. I just have to be very careful not to cut myself.
This knife can cause serious damage to a person who isn’t careful stowing it away back in the sheath when wearing it.If your looking for an ideal hunting, camping, bush craft knife, in my view this could fill that bill very well. It’s darn indestructible and sharp.
