I tuned in to Coleman’s dark room tech about a year ago and have been thinking of trying it out ever since. I’m a night owl and have trouble getting to sleep early enough to get 8 hours of sleep before it gets light out. That leaves me chronically sleep-deprived whenever I go camping which isn’t optimal when you want to tackle a day of hiking.
This brilliant tech from Coleman solves that problem so well. In fact, it’s one of the best things ever invented for camping. Not only does it help people like me who sleep in past sunrise. It’s also great for camping in places such as festivals or campgrounds where there are lights shining on the tent. The tent blocks out that light so you can have a nice dark cave to sleep in.
A side benefit of the dark room tech is that it also blocks a lot of heat. That means that the tent stays cooler which makes it easier to sleep in on a hot day. The high ceiling gives what heat does build up a lot of room before it reaches the tent floor where you’re sleeping.
The tent materials and construction feel high quality and durable as I’d expect for a Coleman product. The 10×4 weatherproof screen room is a very nice feature, especially for buggy areas. It gives someplace to hang out with a view and a good well-vented place to cook in bad weather.
The setup is super easy with the pre-attached poles. It comes with a rainfly which doesn’t go all the way to the ground all the way around. Because of this as well as the height and footprint of the tent this doesn’t feel like the best choice to weather a stormy weekend. However, it is constructed well and Coleman claims that the frame can withstand 35mph wind so it might fare better than I think.
Everything considered, this is a nice high-quality tent from a trusted manufacturer with the amazing dark room tech. If you’re in the market for this size car camping tent and you like to sleep in after sunrise I’d highly recommend it.

This is a nice tent for sleeping in. As another reviewer mentioned, the darkness does limit ventilation quite a bit, but it helps those who can’t sleep with light of any kind. The porch is a nice addition – especially if it’s drizzling and you still don’t want to settle into the tent yet. It’s definitely not a hiking tent as it’s pretty bulky, but if you’re car camping, it’s great. I have a small car and it does take a lot of space, but if you can get it squeezed into the trunk, you won’t regret having it.

This is a really nice size tent…not too big or small. I wouldn’t say that set up is 5 minutes….it might be 20 minutes after you’ve gotten the hang of it? I do like the front screened room…makes a nice little sitting area. But like others mentioned, this tent is hot with the canopy. It really is too hot for a summer tent and as we went in Fall, it’s too cool to keep the canopy off at night. I did find that a lot of the metal looked used on this tent? Not sure why? Didn’t know if we got one that had been returned or what?

I was headed to southern Utah shortly after I got this tent and thought I’d give it a try. I really like the layout, the entryway is a super nice addition and helped keep gear and sand/dirt out of the sleeping area. It’s be a great place to hunker down on a camp chair on a rainy day as well! The tent went together pretty quickly, but I’ll admit I had a watch a video to get the gist of it the 1st time. It wouldn’t want to set it up in some remote area without internet the 1st time as the printed instructions aren’t the clearest. The poles seem cheap for the price, but I haven’t bought a tent in over a decade, so maybe that’s what tent poles are like now. The worked fine and held up to some pretty strong winds.
The dark feature is a double-edged sword. The tent really is super dark, with the exception of a little light creeping in from the floor area. You’ll need a light in it even during daytime. However, that darkness comes by sacrificing ventilation. In southern Utah in 100+ temps it was very hot. Melt your skin off hot. It was unbearable, even at night. Fortunately, I had a RV as well, so I slept in the AC while the tent housed outdoor toys and was used as a changing area by other tent campers who didn’t want to put on a shadow show when they changed – which was an added bonus of the dark tent.
So as long as you are aware of the ventilation issue and either bring a fan or just use it in cooler climates it’s a wonderful tent.

I ordered this tent to have on hand for emergency situations. I haven’t set it up yet, but I’ve used Coleman products before and trust their quality, so I expect this tent to be just as good. The dark room technology sounds great for blocking sunlight and keeping the inside cooler, which is a nice bonus. I also like that it has extra space with the screen room, which could be useful for storage or an extra sleeping spot. Overall, even though I haven’t tried it out, I feel confident it’ll work well when I need it.
