This model was part of a known security vulnerability CVE-2019-16920 AND CVE-2019-17663. This model, along with DAP-1533, DGL-5500, DIR-130, DIR-330, DIR-615, DIR-825, DIR-835, DIR-855L, and (non-US) DIR-862 were open to a hacker exploiting software within the router and gaining access to usernames and passwords. INSTEAD of patching this, D-Link’s stance was that the products were EOL (end of life) and not able to be patched – customers should not use them. (D-Link support announcement SAP10124 in 2019) WHY is D-Link itself still selling them?!?

Works fine with low speed modem rate and have no issues with low demand applications. Concern over old router firmware circa 2017 and new abilities to hack routers.

My first D-Link wireless router was a DI-624 that I purchased about 10 years ago. The wireless in the DI-624 started to drop connections, so a year ago I purchased a DIR-880L AC1900 to replace the DI-624’s wireless capability. I moved the DI-624 in between the cable modem and the DIR-880L and disabled the wireless on the DI-624. This added another layer of protection and let the DI-624 handle all the crap network traffic (such as port scanning). Well, my faithful DI-624 died. So, I purchased the DIR-866L to replace it. Might be overkill, but I love the granularity of the user interface and configuration options. Very satisfied.
1/2/2016 update: My DAP-1650 (wireless access point extender) connects to my DIR-880L via 2.5GHz and 5GHz with no issues. My DIR-880L connects to my DIR-866L via wired Ethernet. My DIR-866L connects to my cable modem. No dropped connections or router reboots from any of these three devices. Been running like a champ for three days, now.
