First is that, he talks to you as though he is sitting right in front of you and using the most basic common sense approach in a way, that you just wouldn’t think about doing! We love our dogs, so why wouldn’t we want to know the best way to enrich our relationship with them? This book truly opened my eyes to deepen my relationship with my furbaby. I am so thankful for authors like Dr. Kelly, to put into words, what I am feeling in my heart, into making my relationship richer. This book is full of useful information on many subjects for dog owners. Easy to follow with no mysterious jargon. Shay has included a personal touch in his writing which makes it realistic, and with a touch of humour. It’s up to date and all the methods of training are positive and kind, the book includes how to progress the training as well as starting at the beginning. Not only are there lots of training techniques, Shay includes management, proofing, and explains about distractions and habitation in the real world. I highly recommend this book and the other books written by the same author.

I worked with a dog trainer and behaviour consultant for my personal dog and a foster dog with behavioural issues prior to finding this book. Reading this book was like being in class with the trainer, except that I can go back and re-visit portions I had forgotten, any time I want. I bought the Kindle version and devoured the book on the plane and I must have looked strange to my fellow commuters as I was nodding the whole time. Presented in an easy-to-read conversational style, Shay breaks down the science behind dog behaviour in a way that anyone can grasp easily. Having fostered a few ‘difficult dogs’ already, I feel even more empowered to take on more foster dogs who exhibit behavioural issues with this book right beside me.

Shay Kelly has written another great book that will help enhance the bond between you and your dog. He explains how dogs learn and delves in to the different techniques and methods to help get the best behaviours out of our best friends, without invoking pain, discomfort and fear. Forget what you’ve learned and seen by so-called celebrity “trainers” and their archaic disproven training methods. I’ve worked with dogs and cats for 23 years as an RVT and have read many dog behaviour and training books, especially after bringing home an energetic Border Collie pup in February. Shay is on the mark with his scientifically proven training methods. I appreciate how he gives the reader an understanding of the underlying basis for training methods so we can apply the knowledge ourselves (ie train our BC on how to not lunge at passing cars… a little counterconditioning. And it worked!) Also love how he acknowledges that one training method doesn’t work for all and will give alternate examples on how to correct the issue. Great book. Highly recommend! Now the question is …when is he going to write a book on Cat Enrichment and Training 😉
