We bought 5 of these last year and have been very impressed with the quality. They are super efficient and quiet compared to a traditional window air conditioner.

Living in the south we appreciate how well they remove moisture from the air and the constant cooling adjusting to demand is much more comfortable the a traditional cycling system.

I’ve read many reviews before buying these and I read a few with other reviewers mentioning noise. These are inverter air conditioners which are much quieter than a traditional window unit. However they are still an air conditioner and do make noise.

If you’ve ever heard the outside unit of a ductless mini split they are about as noisy as those, compressor wise. They produce less fan noise than a ductless mini split outdoor unit fan wise.

These have two fan motors, one for the indoor section (evaporator) and the other one for the outdoor section (condenser). Being inverter both of these fans run at variable speeds based on demand so the fan noise is pretty minimal.

The compressor does vibrate a little bit, much less than a traditional unit though. At certain frequencies the vibration produces lower tones which depending on your window and room may be annoying to some.

Our previous house had a ductless heat pump and we’re used to the noise and it never has bothered us.

Out of the 5 units we bought we’ve had one fail so far. Ironically the failed unit was the one that gets the least usage.

We turned it on when the weather started warming up and the condenser and evaporator fans worked fine. The compressor however wouldn’t start. After 20 minutes or so “f6” appeared on the display. We contacted Dreo and they said they’re no longer selling these so they’d refund our money.

We are very happy with Dreo, a lot of companies try not to honor their warranties these days but these guys are stand up.

Since I had nothing to lose I decided to do ab autopsy on the unit and see if I could figure out what failed. Having an electronics background I was hopeful it’d be something with the inverter circuitry.

If you run into a similar situation and have electronics knowledge it’s actually a really easy fix. After opening the unit up, the inverter/power supply is all on one board. After checking as I went along I found it was the integrated power management chip that failed. In fact it was easy to identify as it burned. I did a search and found one online for $11 shipped. It took a while coming from China but it was worth a try.

I believe the chip had an internal defect that caused the failure. It burned on the supply power pin. Since the compressor resistance was equal on all the windings and the winding insulation checked out I was certain the compressor didn’t cause the chip to fail. The attached photos show the IPM chip that failed, IPM1.

If you don’t have electronics knowledge and proper tools it’s better to pay someone who does since this chip is part of the high voltage system and it takes some skill to remove the old and solder in the new one.

I was expecting better performance from this Dreo Window Air Conditioner after reading so many positive reviews and watching the videos. Installation was super easy. It’s very quiet most of the time. When the compressor kicks in at its highest, there are some annoying rattling sounds that come from the unit like the fan or compressor is not quite balanced or properly mounted. Other than that, it’s very quiet. It’s also very quiet because it doesn’t push as much air as other prior units I’ve owned even when the fan is set to high.
I will say it is very efficient and hasn’t hurt my electric bill even during high temps. I’m going to assume because is always running the compressor at the lowest setting possible to provide cooling output. I couldn’t figure out how to get it out of ECO mode which is probably causing it to do this. I pulled out the manual and turned off ECO to see if this would engage the compressor function a bit more and improve the cooling effect. If it makes a notable difference to performance, I’ll come back and provide an update. Otherwise, I’ll leave this comment as-is.
I really like the moving louver on the unit which makes using it in my bedroom really nice. I don’t like a constant cold air push on my while sleeping and the moving louver makes it feel more like a cool breeze hitting me every few seconds.
I tend to only use a remote for my a/c’s when I’m adjusting the temperature at night from my bed. This remote has no backlighting and the user really needs to see it to use it which means turning on a light to change the temperature.
I’ll finish out the season with this unit and then buy a new replacement next year.
    UPDATE:
I was able to connect with customer service about my concerns and they shipped me a replacement unit at no cost and it arrived within a week of our discussion. The new unit has been in for a day and when running on the coldest setting, there are no rattles. Airflow feels similar with no real way to measure the difference other than it feels a bit colder but without the rattling noises.
I really respect when a company is willing to stand behind their product and minimize the hassle to a consumer in making things right. My customer service agent made the whole experience great giving me reason to move my prior rating of 3 to a 5.

I bought this unit about a year ago. It is super quiet. I’ve had window units before that sounded like freight trains. This one makes a whisper. And it gets VERY cold. It’s probably a little more BTU than needed for my bedroom, but I wanted the inverter technology for the quiet operation.

Unfortunately the unit stopped cooling quite as well and became louder than it should have been. When I registered the AC, that extended my warranty to 30 months at no charge, so I contacted Dreo support. They asked me a few questions, had me send a quick video so they could hear the noise, and then shipped a new unit to me. I just got the replacement today, and it’s installed, and quietly freezing me out of my room again. 😁
I appreciate their prompt support and the great warranty. I don’t know any other companies giving 30 months warranties on their window units for free!
If I had to offer one criticism, it is the remote. I really wish it the display screen was backlit, or at least that the buttons would light up. It’s hard to see the screen at night if you need to make any changes to the settings. But that is a minor inconvenience that I will happily put up with for a unit that is this quiet and operates so well.
