This memoir is both an open, honest account of the author’s traumatic experience with stage 4 breast cancer and a guide for everyone who has been through trauma (everyone!) to enable them to heal through narrative therapy. Mandel is a therapist, carefully, gently and kindly guiding us through how to tell our trauma stories to heal while demonstrating how to do this through her story. I found the book very helpful to process my experiences. Mandel’s warmth emanates throughout and leaves this reader longing for the next book. I strongly recommend this amazing read!

This book is poignant, inspiring, raw, and gripping. A key takeaway I got from the book and one that offers me great hope is that healing is always possible and regardless of physical recovery; and second that it is possible to live a rich, joyful and meaningful life one day at a time in the face of any diagnosis and amid uncertainty. This author’s spirit, wisdom, and resilience are incredible and she is a beautiful soul. I highly recommend the book.

But the writing itself was just OK to me—nothing special in the literary sense and even dull in spots, despite the intensity of the story itself.

This is one of the most inspiring and moving memoirs I have read in some time. Sarah Mandel’s writing is filled with curiosity, creativity, and sharp honesty. I am definitely reflecting on my own relationship with my body and am inspired to evolve that relationship after reading this book. I highly recommend for anyone interested in psychology or if you are just looking for a story to inspire you.

  6. Charlotte Woodrow

This is an exquisite narrative of suffering and hope. The author is a trauma psychologist whose life was thrown into chaos in the final months of pregnancy when she was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer. Through the lens of trauma, Sarah Mandel courageously challenges herself to confront paradoxes of her life. She seeks to find a balance between tragedy and humor, pain and joy, science and the irrational, privileged access to resources yet little control over fate. Little Earthquakes is a memoir, just too true to be fiction. Yet it reads like a novel infused with psychological tools and insights. How could someone endure the simultaneity of new life and impending death. She writes her narrative with impeccable grace.
Little Earthquakes is a must read for anyone who struggles with trauma or post traumatic stress. It is an accessible and warm hug of a read. It is magnificently crafted, with precise choice of language and incisive structure. The author has opened up her psychological veins, much as she has opened her body to invasive treatments. The result is a book about hope in the throes of hopelessness. It will make you love Sarah Mandel and all the people who make her life so rich. And it will make you just s little more humble and grateful.

Heartbreaking and heartwarming read, all in one. Sarah’s honesty and openness compel one to read page after page, taking as few breaks in reading as possible.

  8. Brenna H. Bry

I appreciate so much the obvious time, care, knowledge, self-examination, and disclosure that trauma-informed psychologist Sarah Mandel poured into her miraculous “Little Earthquakes.” She has given the world a gift.
The book is a beacon for patients, families, caregivers, and friends about metastasized cancer. As reviewer Hala Alyan so beautifully shared, I also cried at the end of every early chapter and laughed out loud later on. Most importantly, though, Mandel portrays experiences beyond those that most narratives include and uniquely contextualizes them in the trauma endured. Nevertheless, the reader is not traumatized. The book is full of life.
