Last winter our power was out for a week and we were not prepared, having only a few flashlights j and a headlamp. This year we’ll be more ready because of this awesome little Energizer lantern. I decided to order this because of the three power options,: USB rechargeable, solar rechargeable and standard battery. After all, what good is a lantern if it’s not ready when you need it? This one should be.
When it arrived I was puzzled by how small the box is.. This is a collapsible lantern. It automatically turns on when opened, and turns off when collapsed. The compact storage size makes it ideal for camping but also easy to store at home, even for those of us who live in small spaces. There are three light modes, easily changed via a push button. The lowest setting is a soft warm light, reminiscent of candlelight. There is also a medium and high setting. The high setting was able to light up half of our apartment. This can be set on any flat surface or hung up using a built-in pop-up hook. It also has a handle for carrying.
Honestly, I’m so happy to have this lantern. I think it’s perfect. The price is very reasonable too.

This lantern arrived the day before hurricane Helene hit us head-on here in the Big Bend area of Florida, giving me enough time to charge it up in advance. After the hurricane hit, I was without electrical service for 6 days. This lantern managed to provide the light I needed during the dark hours, for the entire duration of being without power. Thanks to the variety of options for powering it, I never had to worry about it not having enough charge to provide light. The solar panel allowed me to recharge the lantern during the day without needing electricity to plug it in. Had it been too overcast for the solar cell to recharge the built-in rechargeable cells, I could pop 3 AA alkaline batteries (provided) into it and continue to use the lantern.
This lantern turned out to be a very important part of my survival kit in the days following hurricane Helene. 5-stars well earned!

There’s little camp lanterns are very popular now but the biggest issue is that I’ve had them out of power when I needed it number times, both alkaline or rechargeable powered. This one that’s a hybrid really gives you every opportunity to make sure you have the lantern charged. Having a solar panel on top also makes for a great way to trickle charge the lantern during the day at the camp site. There is a small charge indicator LED near the charge port that lights up whether it’s being charged by the color panel or a plug which is very nice.
Another feature that this lantern has odd that it turns off the light when the lantern is collapsed. My other ones don’t have that feature and that also contributes to the lanterns always running out of power.
Lastly, most of these lanterns are too white and too bright for camping. I like that lantern has a low amber setting that’s great for evenings as it is less blinding and gentler on the eyes when everything else is black.
So far very happy with this little lantern and would definitely get them to replace my other lanterns

This little lantern exceeded my expectations. It’s lightweight and provides ample lighting. This lantern works well considering its small and lightweight size. For back-packing purposes, this is an ideal size — 5 1/2 inches tall and 4 inches wide when not expanded.
To power it on, you pull up on the handle and the lantern expands upwards, revealing a plastic encased luminary. As shown in the photo, the lamps measures about 7 inches tall when expanded.
The material used for this lantern seems durable. If dropped, it appears that it would survive a fall. It’s made of heavy-duty quality plastic. On high mode, using just the lithium solar battery, this provides light for about 2.5 hours and up to 8 hours on on low mode. Using AAA batteries, up to 48 hours on low mode and no more than 10 hours on high mode. High mode provides ample lighting to read a book if the lantern is placed within 2-3 feet.
The solar lithium battery is located on the top of the lantern –it is NOT replaceable. As the photo shows, it’s encased in the top lid and not removable. ( My research reveals lithium solar-powered batteries may last five to ten years — heavy emphasis on the word “MAY.” This is dependent on how often one uses the lithium battery. More use = less longevity. )
As this was my first experience with a solar-powered lithium lantern, I had questions. My frustration with this well-designed product is it comes with little instructions. The package has some printed information — printed in 2 point… impossible to read without the aid of a magnifier. I spent several hours trying to find answers to some questions that emerged as I was testing out this lantern. The Energizer website provided no instructions for this S-500 model. A QR code printed on the package didn’t work with my QR app.
Now, I am left wondering if AAA batteries should be removed when charging the lithium battery; how long to leave the solar lithium battery in the sun to recharge; and, what’s the life expectancy of the lithium battery. It would be nice to know how long it takes to recharge the lithium battery using the USB adapter. These are questions that would be very helpful in a small pamphlet. Sadly, none of this is available. For that, I knocked off one star. This information could easily be printed on one side of the box — in a font size of at least 8 point.
