So, I did get this thinking it would be something people could flip through, enjoy the art, read a little about the process, etc. You know, more of a coffee table book. It’s actually very text heavy and gets pretty in depth with the movies, to a point where a casual enjoyer (myself) probably wouldn’t spend a lot of time with it. However, some of my family members are really enjoying it, and it’s a beautiful book all around, if not quite what I expected!

My teen daughter loves all things Studio Ghibli. Her favorite movie of all time is Spirited Away, but she also loves watching Ponyo and Howl’s Moving Castle. So she really enjoyed reading this beautifully printed book that talks about all the references to the films in the world, as well as all the homages that can be found elsewhere. The book is a beautiful hardback with a textured cover that also looks great as a coffee table book. It makes a great gift for all anime fans.

This book is heavy on the text and light on the artwork. I was hoping that it was the other way around, like many other animated movie books that I have purchased. Unfortunately not. So, its great for those that want to read a lot about movies they haven’t seen. or read more about those they have. It has a lot about the people behind the scenes, so I do think it lends itself better to a real fan of the movie-making process, not just a casual fan of the movies.

This is more text than art and it delivers a lot of information about Studio Ghibli’s projects that are not films. It was really interesting to learn about all these aspects of the studio that I knew little to nothing about. The book itself is well bound and while it looks like a coffee table book (large format with a textured cover) it has less pictures than one would expect from that genre.

Great matte cover, looks really nice. Is more an informational and background tome for those who are already well-versed in Ghibli. My sister absolutely loves it as she is a huge fan, and this had some details about movies she did not know before. Not so much a picture book, more of a detailed catalogue.
That said, great print quality, solid feel, thick and definitely presentable. Entries on the more obscure movies were really appreciated as there isn’t much information in english floating about, and a great conversation piece as well.

I love studio Ghibli and ofc Miyazaki. Some of the artwork in this is gorgeous. I love that they kept it on a more matte paper and didn’t add gloss. They kept the images very vivid and it almost looks like it was painted like the original works. There is a lot of information and background that is cool to read up on if you are a serious fan.
This would make a lovely Christmas gift. It looks great on a coffee table or bookcase.
The current price is $24.95 for the hardcopy. I don’t know why you wouldn’t get the hardcopy for the artwork.

This is definitely a book for serious fans of Studio Ghibli films, in that it covers all the tangential media that inspired, or are inspired by various Miyazaki films. The book is divided into sections about early films by Miyazaki, obscure passion projects, Ghibli music, live experiences based on Ghibli films, and the books and stories on which many of the most famous films are based. For a Ghibli fan, the book gives quite a few jumping-off points into other movies, shows, and literature, and can definitely help you add to your “must-watch” list. Although this is a book that discusses and is relevant to children’s films, it is definitely written for adult fans of the studio, or maybe parents of kids who are superfans. It’s almost more of a coffee-table book, with short, but wordy articles that can be read in one sitting and at different times. The quality of the printing and pictures is beautiful, and, even for just flipping through, it’s an entertaining book.
