Mike Phillips –
I’m a big fan of GG. I have read a couple of is biographies and of course loved his recordings.
This book is a delightful, moving and deeply caring look at the life of Glenn Gould, told in a sensitive and deeply sentimental way. I can’t describe all the emotions I feel now after reading the book, except to say for the first time I feel a sense of kinship and understanding of GG that I’ve never felt. The author is gifted, and tells the story with both clarity, sensitivity, respect, and yes, even love. Love for the piano and its complexities, and love for the artist GG was.
It is also uniquely told, often from the perspective of the piano itself as a protagonist. Very innovative and original, yet in light of Glenn’s life, it makes perfect sense!
This book is a triumph. Thank-you Katie for a phenomenal and deeply moving book that will haunt me for many years to come. This is one biography of Glenn Gould you must absolutely read if you have love for this artist.
Blessings,
Mike

Todo perfecto y la llegada en un tiempo récord. El resto de cosas que se supone que debería escribir, me llas ahorro con esta larga frase: dejad de poner un mínimo de palabras.

Although I’m not a musician, I am a lover of music and of books about musicians. This looked like an interesting diversion, and I’m so pleased I bought it. There is, of course, a lot of the standard bio information about Glenn Gould, but with quite a lot of “I didn’t know that” items and anecdotes. What I found really interesting was the technical detail about the components and construction of a concert grand, and the number of variables that go into the sound that finally comes out. There was also a very revealing description of the skills of a tuner / piano technician, and what a godsend the career has been for so many blind people. Highly recommended.

This happens to be a wonderful introduction to Glenn Gould and some of his eccentricities. The actual tracking of CD318’s life is interesting but slightly lacking in detail. However, given the fact that this is not a deeply scholarly work, it is still an excellent addition to a Glenn Gould library as it contains many important discussions such as the background of Glenn’s tuner and his infinite struggle to become a master tuner and Franz Mohr’s delusion that he was Glenn’s only tuner, ha ha ha. I believe that in any subject one needs to read as many works as possible so as to ascertain all possible knowledge of that which the individual has undertaken to study and this is certainly a fun and an easy read with some interesting comments by the author that are not included in more scholarly works. In summa, buy it and enjoy, he is a fabulous Bach interpreter

Amazing book. For anyone wanting to know about Gould, Steinway, Edquist, or pianos in general.

I must admit that I am one of Glenn Gould’s admirers and have tried during the last years to purchase many of his disks.Listening to him playing is like getting a fresh shower each time.Gould was eccentric,odd,bizzare,strange-you name it.But he was a genius. One day, while being in a shop, I met a couple who were looking for a recording of Brahms’ Piano Converto Number One.They asked for my advice. I suggested that they buy the 1962 historical -and for many the controversial -recording Gould has made with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under the conductor Leonard Bernstein. They refused telling me that this pianist “always hums and sings while playing”!
What a typical thing to say about Gould! Gould was indeed strange and used to wear a hat and coat and sometimes gloves in the warm summers because he was afraid to catch a cold or had a phobia of germs. He was also extremely anxious about hurting his fingers and ,as Katie Hafner demonstrates in this gem of a book, he did not hesitate to sue someone who accidentally tapped his shoulder, causing him to stop playing for a while.
The true story here is not just about Gould but concerns a menage-a-trois:Gould,his almost blind piano tuner and a grand piano known as CD318.In this remarkable and fantastic rich story Katie Hafner lets us know a lot not only about the three afore-mentioned, but also about the way piano tuning has evolved from the eighteenth century onwards. What did Steinway and Sons produce during WW2 came to me as a surprise.
This is a story about a genius, his obsessions, his eccentricities, his love affair, and the way he wanted to achieve perfection.Gould ended up tragically and his legacy is here to stay forever. So is Hafner’s book!

ottimo servizio credo comprerò ancora, l’unica cosa che non ho capito è perchè mi sono arrivati 6 ordini diversi mentre io credevo di avere fatto un solo ordine per 6 libri

A WONDERFUL account of a Great and much missed Artist. Glenn Could was one of the Greatist Pianist if not the GREATIST Pianist of the 20th Century.
As a young lad growing up in Nr.Ireland in the 1950’s and studying music I discovered GLENN Gould through his recordings and you could say that he became my Piano Hero. So when any biography appeared on the market I wasted no time buying them , to date I have (5) different accounts of his life ,all written by authors or,colleagues that he would have spent time working with and they would have known him well .
So when I purchased this account written by (Katie Hafner) A ROMANCE ON THREE LEGS I wasted no time adding it to my collection .
I would like to say at this point that I’m more than glad that I did .From the moment that I completed the 1st chapter I sensed that their was something completely different about this story teller. For a start ,she was seeing
Gould from the female perspective ,and being much more sensitive to his character and nature .Gould’s story was handled with Great intelligence and sensitivity .As I was coming towards the end I just wished it would have been Twice as long. I now have a Greater understanding of Gould ,thanks to this author. Which I would be glad to place
As my (No.1) Gould, Biography amongst my others. I would gladly give this (10)STARS if I could .
HIGHLY,HIGHLY Recommended …
Great Stuff.

You can pair musicians with their instruments: Miles Davis, trumpet; Yo-Yo Ma, cello; Hilary Hahn, violin; Manu Katche, drums, among others. And any one of those artists probably consider their instruments extensions of their own selves.
But pianist Glenn Gould took his musical attachment to another realm, calling his relationship to his favorite piano “a romance on three legs,” which author Katie Hafner uses as the title and a musical line in her well-researched and lyrical work. Gould was talented enough to pull the best out of whatever piano he played, but the Steinway CD 318 likewise brought out the best in him creating a muse-like, symbiotic connection. That relationship lasted more than a decade, through numerous public performances and studio recordings.
I loved reading about all the technical expertise that goes into building and maintaining a concert grand – the amount of work and detail required to build these massive yet intricate mechanisms that produce both explosive and delicate sounds. Pianos, like pianists, can be tempermental, with Hafner paralleling Gould’s ofttimes persnickety, quicky and demanding personality to that of his favored keyboard. Hafner mines Gould’s extensive archives for telling details such as how he tasked his tuners to maintain CD 318’s light-touch action to channel his flying-fingered technique.
This is a biography of a pianist as well as a piano, and Hafner tells their story in equal measure. When CD 318 finally “dies” in 1981, Gould follows one year later, but the rich and resonant music they created lives forever, a legacy of their mutual affection.
