After renting a unit like this for a trip through Europe, I decided to buy my own for an upcoming trip to Egypt, since at ~$85, the device would practically pay for itself versus the costs of a rental after one trip. I bought a SIM card from the Orange kiosk in the baggage claim area in Cairo airport.

The device worked well overall. It was able to handle 4 phones being connected, and I got mostly consistent 4G LTE in populated areas, with occasional dropouts. I can’t tell if that was due to the network or the device, though. (Far better than what I got when I had to switch to Verizon’s service for a day for reasons unrelated to the device.) The battery life isn’t great, so after about 4-6 hours, I’d have to charge it. I just kept it connected to a power bank in my backpack. Occasionally I’d have to reboot the device when I had trouble connecting, but I didn’t really think that was a big deal since it only happened about every other day. The app had some minor issues connecting sometimes, but the web interface always worked.

So -1 star for meh battery life and occasional minor hiccups, but overall, I think this is a good hotspot for international travel.

I bought this so I could use my iPhone in France and keep my US telephone number by using WIFI calling. And avoid the $10/day Verizon charge for international service. And it is working. Like others mentioned, the battery doesn’t last long. I am going to buy a portable battery charger to keep it running more than 4-5 hours. And it took me a while to figure out how to get started with it. The “Quick Start” guide it comes with is useless and the support I found online assumed a level of tech & SIM card savvy that was beyond mine. It really could use an “Idiots Guide” so, if you decide to buy this, this may help get you started….

First about the SIM card, in case this is your first time with one…. A SIM card is what you will need to install in your mobile wifi device to get phone / internet service from a local provider. I got my SIM card from a Tabac (smoke shop). The card itself is free. But then you buy “credits” for $5, $10, $20 or whatever which you will add to your card. As I don’t speak french, I am unfortunately still trying to figure out how to add the credits I bought from the Tabac to my SIM, so I then went to the website of the Telecom company the SIM card was from, LEBARA. That site can be translated into english. Once there, I created a LEBARA account using the numbers on the back of the envelope the SIM card came in. The shorter number “No de appel” is the SIM card “phone number”. The long number is it’s registration number. Once I had an account, I went ahead and bought another $10 credit online to get my SIM card charged until I can I figure out how to use the credits I got from the tabac. 3 hours into the day I had used up my initial $10 credit which sadly only bought me less than 300 MB of data. I then realized the $30 monthly plan (20G data + 2hrs intn’l calling) was much, much, much more cost effective. No contract so as soon as I signed up for it, I turned off the monthly renewal. There was definitely a learning curve getting started. Hopefully you won’t waste the $20 I did. But I’m still ahead of the game vs. using my US Verizon plan.

To get started with your mobile wifi device, charge it using the USB cord provided. Then to install the SIM card, remove the back of the device and the battery. Pop the card off of the larger credit card sized board, keeping the rectangle with the clipped corner / adaptor attached to the tiny SIM. Slide the card under the little gold band on the SIM slot to hold it in. (The Quick Start guide will show you which SIM port to use. That’s about all it’s good for. )

Download the Huawei HiLink app on your smart phone. Open it.

Turn on the mobile wifi device.

Go to your smart phone’s settings / wifi networks and choose the one that says something like: Huawei-08A3. You will need the wifi password / key so open up your mobile wifi device again. The wifi “key” is printed on the back of your battery. Enter that and you should be good. (The whole “admin” thing it mentions in the Quick Start doesn’t work.) Your phone should now be connected to the device.

You should now see the device in the app on your phone. If you click “tools” in the app you will see “SMS” this is where messages to that SIM number will show up. If, like me, you register and buy credit or a plan online, the telecom will send your confirmation code here. You may need it to confirm your account. And if you need to use a French phone number during your trip for any reason, you can receive messages here to the local number that came with your SIM card.

Otherwise, as long as you have “Wi-Fi” voice calls enabled on your phone, you should be able to make & receive calls on your US phone number and not have roaming charges. In fact, keep your phone on airplane mode to make sure.

    Hope that helps someone!

I have this little unit in the back of my house and I use it to access the internet on my laptop when I am in the front of the house, about 8 meters or 25 feet away. I don’t know how long the battery lasts, because I just keep it plugged in. I am using it with Digicel Fiji. (4g). It’s fast, and easy to configure. The instructions are clear and helpful. Make sure you get the correct APN and set it up yourself. It’s pretty easy. The people at the Digicel office took an hour fiddling with it and didn’t know how to make it work. I took it home, looked up the mobile internet configuration instructions on THEIR website, followed THEIR instructions, and I was online in 5 minutes. Moral of the story: salespeople in cellular provider shops are just that. You may know more than they do, so don’t be afraid to just do an internet search for the APN (access point name) for your provider before you assume that the device doesn’t work.

A very handy product. Worked for me directly after inserting the SIM. No need for fiddling around. Speeds are reasonable. Battery life is not that great. It lasts probably for 4 hours with full use, otherwise it lasts for at least a day.

    Product Review: Huawei WiFi Router

    Rating: ★★☆☆☆ (2/5)

I recently purchased the Huawei WiFi Router with high hopes of getting reliable and consistent internet access on the go. Unfortunately, my experience has been far from satisfactory due to significant battery issues.
The most disappointing aspect of this device is its battery life. Despite the promising specifications, the battery doesn’t last long at all. After just one month of use, I’m already experiencing severe battery degradation. Initially, the router could manage a few hours of usage, but now it barely lasts for an hour before needing a recharge. Even when is on charge it will shutdown and says battery empty. This is incredibly inconvenient, especially when traveling or during power outages.
The setup process was straightforward, and the router did provide decent internet speeds when it was operational. However, the frequent need to recharge has severely hampered its usability. I often find myself tethered to a power source, which defeats the purpose of having a portable WiFi router.
While the Huawei WiFi Router excels in design and ease of use, the battery performance is a major letdown. For a device meant to provide portable internet access, having such a weak battery is unacceptable. I hope Huawei addresses this issue in future models. For now, I would not recommend this product if you need a reliable and long-lasting portable WiFi solution.

I read some reviews saying its complicated setting up. I thought it was easy. Basically plug and play. I may be using mine differently. I wanted to free myself from home internet so I got a extra sim card from my service provider (Rogers) and plugged my sim card in and it was good to go. I put it on the counter and it broadcasts the signal for my wifi devices at home. Radios, garage doors and smart plugs. I just got it. Ill update if anything changes soon.

This model is so old that it still needs the largest SIM size. Also, it goes into sleep mode unexpectedly, while you are using it. It is not a good choice for someone who needs to rely on internet service.
