Long-time Dukoff (7M) user on my Selmer MkVII tenor sax. Have played over 3 decades including at the college and “amateur” gig level. Currently play about 5-6 hours a week.
Bought a used DV off of eBay (a rare find!) in good condition with a Ultimate Ligature by Francois Louis. For 30 years I’ve been happy with the bright, full, focused sound I got from the Dukoff. Recently though I dinged the front edge and it hasn’t been the same. It’s also never been that great with respect to harmonics/altissimo and lower register response, regardless of what reeds and setup I tried.
Reading all of the hype (all due respect to Jody, who is a great marketeer and craftsman), you’ll think a J/J DV will turn you into David Sanborn overnight. Obviously it won’t. But I’m pleased at how genuinely responsive the DV is, and how it’s opened up the higher and lower registers for me. The FL ligature was fine, but my old trusty Consoli creates a better edge with a Java reed. Another comment is that I primarily generate my vibrato at my chops. With the slightly more open tip (compared to the Dukoff 7M), I’ll have to dial back the vibrato to keep it from turning into an old dude oompa band warble. That’s a good thing – I’m finding that I can play a bit more relaxed. Finally, the DV was the same diameter as my Dukoff, so no re-corking the neck, but you might want to be prepared for that.
Can’t say totally it’s worth the steep “new” price, but definitely give it a try if you can find a good one on the used market. And don’t be afraid to play around with different ligatures.
