So far I’ve had fun with this thing… syncing to its clock as been a little weird at times. Also, the mod section can be a little unpredictable but for the most part has worked pretty well. Given the price, its not a bad option for a sequencer. Would like to see Korg support this product a bit more tho. It seems they’ve all but abandoned this thing.
Update: the new firmware version 2.0 has fixed the vast majority of bugs with this thing. It looks like it hasn’t been forgotten by Korg after all. For the money, there’s really no other hardware sequencer that does what the sq64 can do.

This is the best small form factor sequencer I’ve used, it’s perfect for sequencing my eurorack modular rig. The 3 voices and 8 drums are great for performances and basic song composition. Unless you prefer something with a keyboard or pads, this is a great tool. I find that roughing out a song in this is significantly faster than using ableton, though it does take a few hours to learn.
Excellent:
– Fairly intuitive controls, a few more labels would be nice.
– 64 step sequencer, with the ability to play tracks at different rates (1/2, 1/4, 1/8. 1/16th speed)
– 3x CV/gate/mod channels
– 8x gate outputs
– 8x bonus midi only “drum” outputs
– 2x midi outputs in TRS format
– all channels have configurable midi: input channel, output channel, and port
– drum channels have a configurable midi output note
No big deal:
– Wish the output jacks were upwards facing, seems more modular friendly for quick patching – the SQ-8 has upwards facing jacks, but also much more bulky.
– Was not able to figure out how to use this as a midi input device, like: Midi > SQ-64 > USB > PC
Complaints:
– Several shift modes are not labeled, like chain mode (song sequencer) (Shift + Pattern), is easy to forget.
– Mod values (and sometimes notes) are slow to input, it takes a long time to select a value, moving the default mod value from 127 to 0 takes many turns of the value encoder – it would be nice if there was some sort of acceleration -or- have a knob that moves 8 ticks per click in addition to the regular 1 tick per click knob.

I bought this to drive my modular rig. But I’m sending it back. This is probably no one’s dream sequencer.
I have 2 Korg SQ-1s which perform great. The SQ-1 isn’t perfect, but it is direct and versatile. Maybe I should have just bought 2 more. I’m joking.
The SQ-64 inherited none of the SQ-1’s directness. Modes modes modes. The SQ-64 has too many modes. Especially considering it has so many knobs and buttons. Speaking of buttons, the LEDs are too dim when powered by USB, and there’s light leakage between them, making it unclear which are lit.
It came with 1.0 software so I updated to 1.1. (What a puzzle!) Then a few days later Korg released 2.0. (Another upgrade puzzle.) Too little too late. What’s with the arpeggiator? Korg should know what an arpeggiator is. It’s not this. And the isomorphic keyboard should be a wonderful thing, but keyboard mode seems to have nothing to do with the rest of the sequencer.

Tiene su curva de aprendizaje y es mejor usar tutoriales en Youtube porque Korg no es muy bueno con sus manuales o soporte en línea, su applicación para controlar programas y demás funciones no la he logrado hacer funcionar en ningún sistema oeprativo pero en sentido estricto no se necesita, solo que al no poder almacenar programas, cada vez que cambiar de dispositivos secuenciados es necesario re configurar los canales. Fuera de eso, para controlar mis Korg Volcas (para lo que lo compré) es INCREIBLEMENTE útil y mucho mejor que usar los Volcas directamente.

Really versatile and surprisingly easy to program complex sequences. Very easy to change steps etc. On the fly during playback. LEDs during playback are superb (and brighter when using mains adapter than USB cable from computer). Lots of connectivity options, but you’ll need a MIDI jack to DIN adapter if you plan to connect using DIN cables. Rotary encoders have great feel to them. Loading and saving really easy and you can use long filenames for sequences. Manual is VERY limited but you can pick everything up from YouTube videos. Fantastic at driving a sampler too.

Ce séquenceur est bien, capacitif, idéal pour manager des synthés analogiques modulaires, mais sa prise en main est compliquée. Il a fallu le mettre à jour en version 2 tellement la version 1 est nulle, la mise à jour ne fonctionne pas sur Mac Sonoma Processeur M2 (matériel trop récent j’imagine), il a fallu ressortir un vieux Mac x86 pour la faire… une fois faite, le manuel n’a pas été réédité en version 2, il parle toujours de la version 1, du coup, le manuel déjà pas clair du tout, devient encore plus compliqué car il faut aussi se référer à l’addendum (un document pdf en anglais qui liste ce qui change en version 2) pour comprendre comment les choses fonctionnent… les tutos sur internet parlent de la version 1, on apprend quand même des trucs… Une fois qu’on commence à comprendre comment l’appareil fonctionne, on découvre que les concepteurs ne sont vraiment pas des musiciens, ni des flèches en “user interface”, l’utilisation est vraiment compliquée et pas intuitive, une chance qu’il y a eu une révision du logiciel en version 2 car sinon je le revendais tellement c’est difficile et tellement le manuel est nul. Il y a encore plein de choses que je ne sais pas faire… mais je progresse. On dirait un appareil développé par un stagiaire, et un manuel écrit par des gens qui ne font pas de musique… tout à fait indigne à mon avis de la marque Korg. Enfin, il n’y a pas de bloc d’alimentation, il faut se le procurer soit-même, même Korg ne semble pas vendre le modèle qui convient, il n’y a aucun cable midi, même pas un, même pas le nom d’un model et là encore Korg ne semble pas vendre cet article… je trouve cela scandaleux, il a fallu 3 semaines pour me procurer 3 câbles midi et une alimentation. En revanche il faut reconnaitre qu’il fonctionne bien et qu’il est sympa à regarder quand il fonctionne avec toutes les lumières. Le logiciel “Korg Kontrol Editor” qui permet de le paramétrer et de sauvegarder les projets sur son ordinateur est pas mal, mais lui non plus ne tourne pas sur Mac M2 Sonoma, uniquement sur un vieux mac x86 (quand on sait que ça ne prend que 5 minutes à refabriquer pour les nouveaux macs, on se dit que l’entreprise Korg est mauvaise). Enfin on aurait aimer pouvoir éditer les projet à l’aide de ce logiciel, mais ça n’est pas le cas, c’est impossible et le format de fichier .sq64proj n’est documenté nul part… pourquoi empêcher les clients de s’approprier leurs fichiers de musique? C’est vraiment nul.
C’est un bel appareil, mais c vraiment dommage qu’il ne soit pas mature. Clairement Korg à envoyer à la vente un appareil pas fini d’être mis au point. Et puis l’économie de bout de chandelle de ne pas mettre un bloc d’alim et 3 cables midi non standards… ça fait vraiment radin, même si il avait côté 10 euros plus cher, embêter les clients avec ça petit… voire méprisant. Quand le commerce prend trop le dessus, les clients se font une très mauvaise opinion de la marque. Avec cette expérience je n’ai pas envie d’investir dans un matériel Korg d’aussitôt.

Mit dem SQ 64 lässt sich eine ganze Sammlung an Synthesizer steuern. Es ist egal ob Midi oder CV (Eurorack oder ältere Synths) alles läuft ohne großen Aufwand. Wer die Ausgänge clever kombiniert, kann auch mehr als 4 Geräte steuern. Alles geht nur mit dem Gerät ohne Pc – klarer Vorteil gegenüber Beatstep. Zudem ist der Sequencer fast so gut wie Elektron Geräte – im Eurorack finde ich ihn besser. Wie er sich im Live-Einsatz schlägt, muss ich noch testen. Als Patternlauncher kann man sehr schnell ganze Songs erstellen und einspielen.
Was mich nervt, sind lange Töne. Hier wäre eine gesonderte Gatesteuerung schön. Dürfte zumindest in midi einfach zu lösen sein.

I love the quirkiness of Korg products and wanted so much to like this sequencer. It’s built really well, rock solid materials and easy to use, but it’s not a replacement for the Arturia gear, so I’m keeping my Arturia Keystep pro, it’s much better for sequencing, random settings and just general ability to create music on, connects to everything and is expensive, but worth every cent…still like the Korgs compactness however, just not for me.

This sequencer is designed for use with modular synths. It has multiple cv/gate outs on the back and is literally geared from start to finish to control modular synths and drums.
The guy who bought it for DAW usage and left a “practically unusable” diatribe, did zero research before throwing money at a product. This is not a DAW/clip launcher, nor was it ever advertised as such. Pure comedy.
