this is a set of three book from essential ,intermediate, and advance so comes with 9 audio Cd’s three Cd’s for each book.
so the books are very easy to follow, they have grammar explanation which i find really useful if you want to clear some grammar difficulties, these books are for totally beginners so they work on each words on the audio we got the English speaker and the Brazilian Portuguese ,so you got the English word and then the translation into Brazilian Portuguese and then is a blank space on the audio that you can repeat after the Brazilian Portuguese speaker so you can practice your pronunciation ,which i find really helpful, even the books come with the phonetic of every word..so they work word by word so you can have a clear picture of the Brazilian Portuguese sound.
i do not recommend the book for advance student ,i can even recommend for intermediate student so you can “refresh” your Brazilian Portuguese, but i do recommend definitely for beginner.
it’s a good value to start with.
There is not too much English on the audio like the French and the Italian edition (i got those too, but only is in one book the essential books the other books do not have too much English on the audio ,French and Italian only) …, so the Brazilian Portuguese series do not have too much English on the audio like i said before, but his voice (English speaker) it’s not that annoying which i enjoy to listen to both the English and Brazilian Portuguese. and the quality for the pages are better than the old version of the living language series

It is one of the best books for leaning Portuguese. For learning Portuguese there are hardly any resources. But these books along -with the CDs are the best among all . As usual Amazon is the best.

I cant believe it took me this long to write a review on .Living Language Brazilian Portuguese,(LLBP)
Well I ordered this Oct 2013 but didnt start using until Jan 2014.
This is by far the Best Portuguese Language book and Audi set and online set.
I have read everything from Brazilian Portuguese Dictionary,Brazilian Portuguese for Dummies,to 501 Portuguese Verbs etc…
and this book beats them all by miles.
It has a simple layout on the page.
Portuguese words are printed blue in bold font where English is black itlaic not bold.it pleassaing to look at.
The book seems to come from an English speakers perspective but I cant verify that but ,they explain it in a way that makes those whose native Language is English easier to understand.
    they give good relatable explanations
I rarely use the audio books because I normally study 30mins a day on my lunch break at work but if you study at home along with the book you will get the most out of the audio CD
I have not used the online support but its nice to know its there if I need it.
I have tried to learn Portuguese off and on for 2 years now and this book has been the missing piece to my language puzzle. It help me to understand the grammar more. Not just what to do but why I am doing it. for example in Portuguese de pronounce(G) can mean (OF) but when a word following (de) is fem or Masc. it will change to DO or DA because in Portuguese The is either (O) or (A) do for example a restaurant I like here in my town is called Coisas Do Brasil= something of Brazil;Things of Brazil
when using nouns you say The Brasil or O brasil so, Coisas de + o Brasil= Coisas do Brasil. I know I didnt explain that just right but I hope you get the point. At first I knew to us DO but not understand why.
My downfall is I study 30min a day at lunch mon-fri but with more time I would be further along than I am now. Also I dont get a lot of chance to talk to my Brasilian friends and when I do they want to use english. So I suggest use LLBP, studying at least 30mins a day or an hour 4 days a week but make sure you find opportunities to use it and speak. As of right now I am better at reading and writing Portuguese than I am speaking it because the lack of Opportunity to interact with the culture.
This is The best books I have found and would personally buy it for other I believe in it so much. However I just found another program called Fluez Portuguese but this is a higher end language program that comes from an English perspective.
with LLBP and Fluez I know I am well on my way to Fluency. I hope this helps.

Exactly what I wanted. Provides practice for reading, writing and listening for a decent price. Too bad the program is discontinued. Hard to find.

I think it’s good, but it’s not perfect. Granted, I purchased plane tickets to Rio in July for a trip in November, so I gave myself 4 months to learn Portuguese from scratch. You should definitely read the books, and not just rely on the CD’s. I thought the first two books were great, and allowed me to learn vocabulary and grammar so that it stuck in my head. The third book was a little too much, because it hit me with all the other verb tenses at once, and it didn’t absorb as well. I also found several mistakes, and the conversation practice included words that they don’t provide a translation for, so I was scratching my head a lot. As for the audio, since I commute 45 minutes each way to work, I had ample time to listen to it, and eventually repeat it. Unfortunately, the voices on the CD’s sounded nothing like the voices I heard in Brazil.

The good news was that when I arrived in Brazil, I had no problems reading signs or menus. I spoke Portuguese to people, and no one said that they didn’t understand me. However, I didn’t understand them at first, so it was frustrating. They also knew I was not from there, so they were very patient with me. Stick with it. After a week in Brazil, I started understanding people, and having conversations with them. Of course, by the time I got it, it was time to go home.

I never tried Rosetta Stone, so I can’t compare the two, but I think this helped me a lot. I still think it could be better though. Maybe I expected too much. If you plan on going to Brazil, you should watch video from the Globo TV website to hear real Brazilian accents first.

Highly recommended. This course has its flaw to be sure, chief among them not enough vernacular vocabulary. But this is still an excellent course. There’s a word for someone who can speak a language but not read it or write it: illiterate. With that in mind, stay away from audio-only or video-only courses and buy this instead. (If you also want to learn how to converse in an informal way, I recommend Semantica, which is online.) The Living Language narrators speak in an a Carioca (Rio de Janeiro) accent and it takes some time to get used to this. But it’s worth it.
