I had to replace one after about 3 years. First bought MJ Plus in 2017. In 2019, the phone lines were getting a lot of static so I replaced our 10 yr old cordless Panasonic phones with new ones. Didn’t help. Searched internet and learned it might be MJ as it may have taken a hit with our continuous lightning storms. As soon as I did, the line was crystal clear again. I put the second one on a surge protector. MJ worked excellent on our FiOS. Never any problems. All calls were crystal clear, no lags and callers said the same on other end.
A year or so later, the MJ app was rolled out so I could make/take calls and texts on my iPad! Super convenient. Can also call into the voice mail with the app to pick up messages.
If power goes out or if I disconnect my MJ or my phone, then calls will be recorded as a .wav file and emailed to me. Another handy feature. Call forwarding is included with MJ which came in handy when we were without internet as calls could be forwarded to my husband’s cell phone. Connecting with iPad contacts is optional. Once I did that, I could block callers and names would show up in the MJ app’s call menu for ingoing, outgoing and missed calls. I can search to place a call to someone in my contacts right from the MJ app. I can turn on ipads DoNotDisturb feature and calls will go straight to voicemail without ringing.
However we moved to rural America in 2022 and stuck now with sucky internet. Only option here is microwave tower, cellular and satellite. We’ve tried them all. Cellular hot spot with booster antenna gives us the most stable internet but we have a lot of packet loss during daytime (10-40%) which means MJ isn’t working well between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm.
Still it’s better than no home phone. Works just fine on weekends, early mornings, evenings and sometimes during day.
I did try OOMA here but the internet is so bad I couldn’t even get Ooma software updates to load on the telo after leaving connected for 18 hours. I was hoping maybe Ooma device might be more robust since it’s four times the size of MJ. But in the end could never get Ooma to work.
I contacted MJ support when first installing and when porting and when setting up the second MJ. Support was helpful enough each time.
My husband and I switched to needing a hearing impaired phone (with on screen captions) last year. We just can’t hear conversations well on cell phones and traditional phones any more. For residential home phone service, I am quite satisfied and I can’t beat the price. It’s not the fault of MJ that this internet is too slow. If you have decent broadband and no packet loss it works great.

Can’t used telemarketing blocking unless you give a code to your business inorder not to be block. Also cost you $45 a year & $10 inoeder to keep your phone number.

The sound quality is great. It wasn’t complicated to install but my mother has an old Mac and I was not familiar with it. The box directions were slim and online you have to read a some, but with a Mac it was a little different. While I waited for about 5 min for phone assistance I finally found the right software to download, created an account, then imported her SAME landline number she had since the 70s. Once I had the right setup software it was easy. If you want to port a number, you can do it AFTER you get a number from Magicjack and then you can choose to import a number you own. You will need the account number of the business that has that number. To import your own number will cost an extra $23 incl tax, and takes 1-2 weeks until it is ported over. Don’t cancel the number’s service until you get the email from magicjack saying it’s been ported.
Another thing the tech support told me is you can have it plugged into the wall and they give you the wall plug, or plug right into the computer, but then if you want to have calls, you have to leave the computer on all the time. The wall plug is the better option if you ask me.

This is an amazing product. You plug it into your WiFi modem, your phone or phone wall jack and an electric outlet. After about 30 to 60 seconds you have a dial tone on your phone! Magicjack has a lot of easy to remember local phone numbers you get to choose from. I had no luck porting my original house phone number. Magicjack doesn’t have support, you at least support that responds. However, set up is easy and done all online. The annual cost is remarkably low. I mean like $25 or so a year. You can also plug this very small piece into your PC or laptop and use it with a phone. Your phone number follows the small unit so wherever you are as long as you have Internet you can use it. However, there is no need to move it out of your house as the Magicjack phone app allows you to make outgoing calls, outgoing and in coming text messages and simultaneous ring. Simultaneous ring means both the app and house phone will ring at the same time no matter where your cell phone is. However, the app doesn’t consistently ring on my Pixel 8 Pro. Perhaps an update will correct that issue soon.

If you’ve heard something about Magic Jack and you’re doing some research – believe everything you hear about this product. This is a Voice Over IP device for your land line. I know most people don’t have land lines any more but if you do, you need to convert to Magic Jack. I have 2 land lines for a small home based business. My cable company (Frontier) increased my phone charges to $50 per line per month. After installing the device, my monthly charge is about $4 per line – saving me over $1,100 a year. It’s easy to install and works great. Clear sound quality – no dropped or missed calls and they even send you an email with the voice message left in your voice mailbox. The best things that I can say about this product is the fact that the service is very reliable – the included features are great and it costs a fraction of what you would be charged by a phone company or internet carrier – AND IT WORKS! Try it – you won’t be disappointed.
