This book was the recommended book for the Guitar course i took in the college. Its a good book for a newbie who knows nothing about a guitar. ITs a good starter book for playing guitar. has lots of simple songs to practice and teh CD that comes along is also good. It also teaches how to read music notation.

great book to help learn the notes on the guitar very easily and the proper playing position and technique. I am using this book to teach guitar lessons with and I would recommend it to any guitar teacher who wants to teach actual notes instead of just strumming chords and tabs. There are no tabs or chords in the book so do not buy this if that is all you are looking for.

No CD! Description says Book/CD, however only a book arrived. I paid extra for the product that included the CD as there were other lower priced options without a CD. Apparently, I paid more for nothing.

I think this is a good book to introduce the classical guitar. It will show you how to read music and many of the exercises are very useful for teaching the notes.
However the CD is really bad. Most of the exercises are not on the CD, so the student who is trying to learn how to read the music is put in the position of not knowing how its supposed to sound– this is a major disadvantage, especially with less simple rhythms.
Next, the CD is fake syntho music, not real classical guitar. That is a real disappointment since you want to hear what the guitar is supposed to sound like. Tone being one of the main points. Finally, if they went to the trouble of producing a CD of synthesized music to illustrate the exercises, its just wrong that they didn’t put all of the exercises on the CD.
I prefer Noad’s solo Guitar (although it has a similar problem with lacking the exercises on the CD, but at least its a real guitar) and Parkening’s Methond (which has ALL the exercises on the CD).

A perfect introduction to classical guitar for the beginner.
Excellent pacing and presentation of material with enjoyable exercises and tunes at every step which acts as great encouragement as the student progresses.
Only two small points of criticism: the explanation of right hand fingering notation is excellent (p,i,m,a) but the absolute beginner could become confused about the notation for the left hand fingering (1,2,,3,4) and might inadvertently think that these refer to the fret numbers (which, in the first position, are generally identical) rather than the finger numbers (which they are meant to).
Also, an arpeggio sign is used in the final pages without any prior explanation.
But, overall, it could hardly be bettered.

I find this a very good beginner book since I want to learn to play guitar by reading music rather than by TAB. I am working my way through the lessons and gradually learning left and right hand fingering with pleasant sounding tunes. I don’t really use the CD, but that isn’t something I was concerned with.To complement this book I use dexterity exercises found in other books. I have applied to take lessons at the local community centre to get me started with good habits, but imagine I will continue to use this book and later purchase book 2.
