This device is probably fine if you’re setting it up from scratch.
But if you’re upgrading from another PFsense box, headaches are ahead for you. All three ports are part of a network switch instead of individual NICs.
Downloading a config from an old box (An SG-1000 in my case) and uploading to the SG1100 along with remapping the interfaces will not work. On reboot, you will need to console connect and re-set things up so that you have VLANs with your WAN and LAN ports on separate ones. Even then, after a day of trying to upgrade a Netgate SG-1000, I wasn’t able to get anywhere since the VLAN port doesn’t show up as an option and the auto detection of the WAN port doesn’t work. I had to walk away.
I’d been using PFsense since around 2004 before version 1.0. I’ve used desktop PCs and rackmount servers, Soekris, PC Engines and other Netgate products (SG1000, 3100 and 5100). I had been a PFsense Gold susbscriber until Netgate ended that and was looking to continue supporting them. I’m frustrated and disappointed.
There is a 20% restock fee if you want to return it.
If you’re looking to buy this, consider Qotom or PCEngines if you want small and low power.

The pfSense router and firewall is a remarkable device, excelling in the realm of security. However, one must brace oneself for the arduous task of configuring it. This intricacy poses a challenge, particularly for those venturing into the realm of cyber security product installation for the first time. Nevertheless, once you navigate through the labyrinthine process of setup, you’ll discover the true power and effectiveness of this remarkable tool. Its robust security features and unwavering protection make it an indispensable asset for safeguarding your digital fortress. Embrace the complexity, and you shall reap the rewards of impenetrable defense.

great device, full feature set, very responsive support (even at midnight!), solid price, all around excellent

I purchased one of these units last year which turned out to be defective – one of the internal components was running hot and the unit would periodically and randomly reboot. Tech support was excellent and promptly agreed to replace the defective unit. I would have given this product 5 stars but Netgate made me pay the shipping costs to return their DEFECTIVE unit back to them. Why should the customer be required to pay out of his own pocket for Netgate’s flawed quality control? Doesn’t seem very fair to me…
The replacement unit arrived promptly and has been working fine for several months now.

I was a computer guy, but then I got more into science, so I am not a computer science expert. What I know is that this is a stand-alone server for VPN, that is what I am using it for, so that I do not leave my machines vulnerable. I port forward VPN to this machine, and then that provides me with secure access to my local network. And it works great with a good interface.

I recently got a business level fiber connection for my home so I could move my web hosting here and save the insane fees I was paying for hosting me out in a datacenter. I needed a rock solid firewall /router solution to allow me precise control over ingress ports and to set up a separate VLAN to keep home and business traffic completely isolated.
This little NetGate fits the bill perfectly – My connection is only 100 Mib/sec so I did not need the higher end units – this one should serve well up to 500 Gib/sec I think… if you have faster connections get the next model up for throughput/processing etc..

This device has been a great upgrade from my home Wi-Fi router device, by eliminating some issues I was having. There is a bit of a learning curve but nothing a couple videos couldn’t fix. This is more of a small business device than it is a home device, so unless you want to learn about how it works a home Wi-Fi router will likely work best.

I’d been looking to get into the pfsense world so when my router got hit by a power surge I decided to get this little guy. I was a bit concerned that I wouldnt be able to run all the features I wanted with the hardware specs but so far running a VPN server and ad blocking wothout issue. I also looked at building my own device but the cost difference is so small at this level I decided against that route. Couldn’t be happier with device and the software at this point.

We’ve been deploying Pfsense & Netgate For a few years now for our corporate clients
Whatever you throw at this firewall it can pretty much handle it We use the 1100 For our PBX Phone systems No complaints on handling the traffic.

If you know network and want a real firewall this is an awesome device. It is very powerful. You can monitor your usage, ISP. Block the kids from the internet. (Schedules.) Redirect the DNS. Commercial grade and low costs.

Works really well but not intended for casual users. Is secure by default, as it should be, what it makes it a bit harder to use. If you have the skills to set it up, or are interested in investing the time to learn, it’s a great choice.

Have owned this firewall ( NETGATE 1100 ) for 1 week , and so far so good no problems. The Netgate 1100 Firewall was very easy to install. This device has tons of support-help available from several location examples Netgate Docs and Support , Netgate Forum, You Tube etc.. For a home user the firewall and security keep my mind at ease knowing that this device is protecting my home and family.
But my main reason for purchasing , is the COST OF the Netgate 1100 device and the available FREQUENT updates . Its very DIFFICULT TO BELIEVE THIS SMALL DEVICE HAS SO MUCH POWER AND FUNCTIONS AND SO COST EFFICIENT.
Thanks wishing this is helpful

Unless you thoroughly understand networking terminology and networking then this device is (NOT) for YOU! RUN!!! Unless: ( YOU ARE) (A NETWORK technician). PFsense is a very robust and good program (if) you’re a network techy.
It is (dangerous) if you are not because (guessing at a setting) can not only defeat the purpose of fire wall security , but actually expose yourself to intrusion. Their manual is great, lots of info (IF ) you graduated from MIT.
So Netgear line of network products with PFsense are (NOT for a home user!!)
Then if you cannot get it working you have to PAY for SUPPORT that is more than the device!
Then when you CANNOT get your system up you WILL BE HIT with a HEFTY restocking fee. A bigger margin than profit on the device. So their return policy is a CASH COW. So they have a good thing going! Reselling the same router over and over and getting the restocking fee.
How do they get by with that. They have a POLICY that is VERY MISLEADING, They say you get free support guaranteed to get you online! Actually a LIE! They made me disconnect ALL OF MY network devices MY NAS AND OTHER COMPUTERS and said they only GUARANTEE to get THEIR ROUTER WORKING with ONE COMPUTER. IF you want your ACTUAL NETWORK up it will COST you about $300!!!!!
WHICH IS NOWHERE IN WRITING AT THE POINT OF SALE – The company has the integrity of Al Capone!
