Update: I gave up on this. It gets clogged up so easily, I was having to clean it every day or it would stop working right. I’ve got 8 tanks, I’m not inexperienced but I struggled to make this filter work correctly. I went back to a sponge filter and my tank is so clear now! I should have kept it running instead of this filter.
    ________

I’ve never had so much trouble with a filter before. I was using an internal sponge filter and switched to this filter because the tank is in my bedroom and the bubbling was annoying.

The pieces aren’t great. I wanted an elbow piece to attach to the spray bar so the spray bar was vertical with the filter but the pieces don’t fit together to make this. *Edit: if you use enough elbow pieces you can do this but the spray bar is very long

I keep having to clean this filter out, things keep getting stuck to the slits on the side where it pulls in water. You would think that’s a good thing but it blocks the filter and then the air tube and regulator stops working and doesn’t produce bubbles anymore.

If you have the air tube and regulator on it helps to turn the tubing inlet so it is horizontal, it seems to keep the water from going into the tubing, th water stops air from coming out when this happens. It’s also very loud. I don’t know if it’s the regulator that is bad or what but the bubbles are really fine and they crackle as they come out. You can close the regulator almost all the way and it is still loud, sometimes it sends the air out in short loud bursts.

Ramshorn snails keep getting stuck in the part of the filter where different arts connect, they are getting their bodies stuck in crevices then they can’t get back out and they die. I learned this the hard way when I went to pull one off the filter and I pulled it’s insides out of its shell.

As of right now I definitely wouldn’t recommend this filter

For me, noise-level was the most important factor. I was nervous when I first bought this because I’ve purchased filters that promise to be quiet and they aren’t.

The NICREW filter is great. Works as promised. It’s not super-dooper-uber quiet – but certainly a heck of a lot better than those Tetra ‘Whisper’ filters. Absolutely the quietest in this price-range.

While I recommend this product and gave it 5-stars just know a few things:

    1) While the replacement filters aren’t expensive – you’re going to have to get them from the manufacture / Amazon. (You can make your own … but I’m gonna guess most people buying this are new to the hobby.)

    2) If you place the filter to deep in the tank, the air-flow will suffer since it will take more work for the engine to draw in the air.

For the record: I have a 20 gallon tank.

This is a powerful little filter, suction cups stick well and blends nicely in the tank. Was using a Whisper amongst others and so far this is the best. Love the rainfall affect and if you angle it the right way it is not very noisy. Also like that it has multiple function. The filter itself is very quiet. I haven’t tried to clean it yet so will have to update another time. I recommend it highly especially for the price.

I ditched my sponge filter because it couldn’t catch larger particles in the water. This little filter is 2 stage, with a larger sponge and then a charcoal pack. It churns out lots of water for such a small unit.
The other reason I switched was that the air pump was a bit loud and I could never get used to the constant drone, especially at night. This filter also does a great job of aerating the water, so an air stone would no longer be needed. I get more volume, more circulation, great aeration and better filtration. Easy disassembly for cleaning. Takes a minute to clean out. It comes with a rain option as well. The tank wasn’t getting much circulation before, but now the water is flowing well. There are enough spots in the tank for the fish where they don’t get pushed around by the water flow and can chill. I like this filter a lot and I would use in additional small tanks if I add more.

Easy to use. Easy to clean. Love how I can move the arm to direct the water and thus the bubbles where I want.

I got this for a 2-gallon tank and the flow was really too strong for my needs. I used only the elbow facing upwards and it worked just fine. It would be nice to have an adjustable flow but that’s just me. I like the washable foam filter and the basket where I can use charcoal from a bag. It’s also near silent when running.

I purchased this mini filter for my planted 6 gallon tank as a newbie. Its small and easy to setup. It moves water pretty well and there is an optional spray bar and longer tube extension. One issue is that medium and larger sized debris gets caught on the intake section and needs to be brushed away. The other thing that is not quite ideal is that there is a hum when this thing is running (basically all the time) which you can hear when in the same room. It’s not very loud but audible. Otherwise this is good value for what I paid for it

It’s extremely powerful for the size. Major difference in flow compared to my old in-tank filter. My fish seem entertained with the currents.
It is noticeably more noise though. Not extreme, but when I put my ear to my tank I feel bad for my fish.
I’m going easy on the assembly o-rings. I wish there was a better way to lock the pipes in.
If I dare make them tight they will be clocked to the wrong position. I have to gently use pliers to adjust my flow tube angle.
I can work with it though. I’ll find a way to disassemble efficiently.
Currently the top part sticks so well with 4 cups it’s almost impossible to get off without something flat to break the suction seal. Then the filter portion only has one lower one so it pops off and gets cockeyed super easy.
When you do get it apart a big cloud of trapped gunk comes out in the water. So it has to be cleaned regularly to keep working properly.
    Price is very nice though!

Pump was easy to set up, with aeration or shower set up. Went with aeration to reduce splash noise for wife. Air intake hose has a quick easy adjustment dial to increase and decrease air going into the jet. Goldfish and Calico Shubunkin love it, they swim up into the jet to drift back.
Cleaning is as easy as removing the bottom, rinse sponge, open plastic case to rinse carbon filter back, put it back together and back on the pump, takes less time to wash then it does to walk from tank to the kitchen.
    Great pump for the price.

So far this filter is working well. It has a good flow for a small tank and in fact may actually have a little to much. My only complaint is that you have to unplug and remove the entire filter to clean. Other than that it seems to be solid.

Even the smallest model is very strong. Separate compartments for filter and charcoal are useful. Good value.

It’s the perfect size for my little tank. The flow is good and does not disrupt the fish by overpowering them. It has a hum that takes a bit of time to get used too. But overall it is exactly what I needed.
