Disclaimer: I did not purchase this off of amazon, but another violin site. I own the WAV5 Amberburst (same as the one being sold here)
I have had this instrument for 11 months now, and play it on a Fender Champion 20 amp. Long story short, this is the best purchase I have ever made. The design is clean, with a slightly aggressive look to it. I call it the Lamborghini of violins because of the sharp angles and unorthodox shape.
To start, the sound UNAMPLIFIED is nice and quiet, but not so much that you cannot hear mistakes. This allows you to practice without making too much noise and disturbing others. On the other side, when an amp is used, the instrument comes to life and sounds wonderful. Very clean and loud. Due to the lack of a battery, there is no worry about a dead or weak battery before a performance.
Now, the biggest complaint about the NS Violin is the shoulder rest. And yes, it is not good. If improperly set up, the violin will rotate, pitch, and slide all over the place. This was a huge problem when I first received it. However, there are multiple things you can do to fix this: 1) The allen screw and thumb-tightened screw should be an equal amount twisted, so that the retention bar sits 100% parallel to the fixed bar (if you own the violin you will know exactly what I am talking about, if not, then you will understand once you are holding it). 2) Take a key, Q-tip, and some rosin, and scratch some rosin dust onto the Q-tip, then put it onto the contact joints of the shoulder rest peg and clamp. This will reduce the turning significantly. 3) Take your shirt off, and bend the aluminum shoulder rest to contour your body, so it fits exactly you.
Using these 3 steps nearly eliminates all the gripes about the shoulder rest system. Still, it could be better.
Although most of the writing in this review focused on the negatives, I cannot stress how much I love this instrument. It will absolutely turn heads, and play beautifully. The shoulder rest is the only negative side of this violin, and even that can be overcome with some quick fixes. If you are looking for an affordable electric violin that looks as good as it sounds, this one is right for you.
