Since you are looking at this item, you clearly use disc brakes. If you use hydraulic brakes, you know that sometimes the pistons don’t come out straight. They sometimes come out top first or just slightly slanted.

This uneven application will cause uneven break pad wear and reduce the overall life of your brake pads since one side/edge will be worn out before the rest of the pad.

This tool is great not only at spreading the pads and pistons without having to remove the brake pads. But it is fantastic at straightening the pistons if they don’t come out evenly.

    Pros:
    – Good Value, priced about right for a simple tool
    – Good for spreading pads
    – Even better at straightening and aligning pistons
    – No need to remove brake pads for service

    Cons:
    – The whole tool is the same thickness as a rotor, which is fairly thing. If you apply too much force, it will bend

If you run Shimano or many other rotors that have a typical thickness of 1.8 mm, then you can use the PS-1 in place of rotor to test a bleed. If you use 2.0 mm or 2.3 mm thick rotors, then you will have to adjust your bleed to compensate. The tool works great for me and unlike so much that Park Tool makes, is actually reasonably priced. Five stars.

We’ve all be there. Your new brake pads are in and you didn’t squeeze the levers but somehow the pads are flush and you can’t get them over the rotor without spreading them apart to push the cylinders back in. They have a tool just for that which is shaped like a square wedge, but this was $10 cheaper and shaped like a rotor, so I went for it first. I like the idea and I will use the tool, but the angle of the rotor tip may not be far enough to spread apart a really close pair of brake pads. If that’s the case, it’s easy enough to sharpen it a little with some sand paper or a whet stone. If you do sharpen this, make sure it’s even and that you graduate up through the coarseness until it’s mirror smooth or you can rip up your pads.

For $10, it’s worth it to have one more purpose built tool in my kit to save me the worry that the butter knife might screw up my pads. I used a folding utility knife before I had this and I really was worried about scratching something with the sharp blade. And there’s a lesson in that, too. If you sharpen this thing, don’t go as sharp as a blade. Just a little bit narrower for very close pads.

I’ve started trying to do my own mountain bike maintenance. I typically get half way into a task and realize I need a special tool. Same story doing a brake pad replacement. Price on the Park Tools option was within my budget and next day delivery saved my weekend ride.

A gift for someone who has spent decades using a screwdriver to do the job thus tool is for. Does he actually need this tool? Maybe not but it’s Park Tools so will not be a disappointing gift and is as durable and use gas the rest of their range of tools.

Great trim to travel with as it spreads the pads without any damage if they accidentally close when traveling without tires installed

    I actually bent mine.

I was trying to force a piston back in using this and I bent the tool. It still works but the neck isn’t flat anymore. I later discovered the aforementioned ceramic piston had gone crunchy. I discarded the caliper.

This tool makes it easy to install new brake pads. The quality is great and the ergonomics is good. The price currently is great as well.
